He very nearly had to have his thumb amputated, which would likely have ended his pro career.

Semi interesting language point for the non spanish speakers - colango means 'hanging', so the thumb was hanging by a tendon and artery.

Colgate (like the toothpaste) means - "go hang yourself" in spanish.
