The BBC seemed to think no breaks.

It doesn't seem likely that even Geraint could do this with a break.

I don't know you see people walking away with worse than that and it's just loss of skin and some new kit - I'm guessing the back of his jersey indicates he slid a bit which might actually be a good sign.

It's like cycling's version of the gag about the hunter who's shot his mate, isn't it?

"Right, Geraint, Chris is out of the Tour so we're switching you to number one."
"Great, what do I do to prepare?"
    "Just do what he did."

    *BANG*

    "All right, now what?"

He's got a huge gap in form to make up.

An idea that's growing on me is Dan Martin - not many TT guys left to lose time to.

Seems it was a bad crash, but a cut over the eye was the reason the doctor called it.

That would indicate Bardet more than Martin imho.

With the right break could be any rank outsider if GC contenders keep dropping like flies.

I don't think form is the issue with Porte. Crashing is his problem. He always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think it will be a fight between G (pending his injuries from today) and Bernal. I thought Tom D would be in the mix but sounds like his knee injury isn't going away.

If I were Dave Brailsford I would pull all my potential team leaders from any racing and wrap them up in cotton wool.

Ag2r ttt isn't that terrible either. Ineos need g for the ttt too.

Who has the best ttt squad out of the GC survivors?

Martin wins races. Bardet doesn't. This is important to my judgement.

Anyway Thomas seems like he's fine. Just bruising and scrapes. Someone suggested that he could do La Route d'Occitaine on Thursday if he's desperate for a race.

Martin has an excellent racing nose for when to attack.

    He’s a top tactioner.

That’s the difference. He’s hard as f@cking nails and is tactically ahead of everyone else.

Would definitely say he’s good at maximising his legs.

    Really rate him, actually.

Probably best to just train. Wonder if it would be worth it to do another camp at altitude with this change to race programme. Is there a cut off date from when it's too late to the race (for training at altitude)?

Regarding Martin, while all of that is true, he loses time and then pops off for stages. He is a decent 1 day racer, but really not a GC threat. I'd rate his GC results below Kwiatkowski's.

They'll have to change the rules in order for him to do that.

How about someone like Soler to pull a Carapaz?
He's got a decent ITT and Landa there to tow his second Movistar upstart over those big, third week Alps. :P

He'd be able to do it if he got permission from the Tour de Suisse organisers - and I'm sure he'd get it.

According to Oddschecker a few places have Dan Martin at 100/1 for GC.
Worth a few quid on an EW bet IMO.
Suppose an issue for Martin is that with Gaviria and Kristoff, UAE will have one eye on the sprints.

Looking at Oddschecker 200-300/1 each way on Michael Woods is worth a quid or two.
