Doesn't sound too surprising, I lose a couple of kilos on a long run, so losing half that on a similar length ride sounds about right. It's only 1.5% body weight, that sort of fluctuation isn't odd.

Phew. Funny thing (or maybe not so), previously I just used a High 5 zero electrolyte and have been getting on with it fine. I put 2 tabs in a 500ml bottle for rides of less than 3 hours and 2 x 500ml bottle's for 3hr+ rides. Urine is almost always a shade of yellow after.
Today, for the first time, I used Isopower by Powerbar. 50grams in 500 mls, urine was almost clear.

Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

I'll second that. Move to Scotland, we might stay in the EU. :D

    Fine work Sir!
I managed to shed 100g last week which is fine, but I'm starting to wonder if my increased FTP, and resultant muscle increasing may mean weight loss, such as it is, may well halt anyway (For me at least), and perhaps even increase?

If you get into the realm of increasing muscle mass vs loss of body fat, measuring your overall weight can be a bit demotivating. Maybe better to measure your waist and / or thigh circumference and see them improve?

Age wise I'm now heading for free prescriptions, so any increase / decrease in weight is invariably lard based. I'd have to be doing insane amounts of gym work and probably buying testosterone patches on the interweb to put on any measurable muscle at my age. I'm fitter than I've been since my early 20s mind.

Very true, but I can see and feel my power is upping (Just increased my FTP by 10%) and am not obsessed with my weight as such, more fitness and being more competent on a bike are my prime aims - oh and losing this bl00dy persistent tum, it just won't get the hint!

Good call on measurements - am already measuring waist, and will add thigh to that, and have also bought a fat measuring calliper thing off of the bay of e for pennies, so will add that in as well - out of interest it currently says I am slightly at the high end of average (Or rather the attached chart does) for my age group, and I need to shed a bit to get down to the 'Ideal' group which is one below where I am.

That little bit of belly fat is the very last to go when I lose weight. Which is good in a way because it's easy to keep an eye on, and when It's disappeared I know I'm down to an optimal weight.

Unless you count liposuction, unfortunately we don't get to choose where we lose the fat from. The male body seems to hang on to belly fat the longest

It's a stubborn little (not so little) blighter eh

That is good news in a way, as you say it's a nice easy gauge for optimum weight - have nearly lost a stone so far, and it's still resolutely there, although it has reduced a bit, so I just need to keep focussed on the end game.

Onto the wagon again, after my previous weight loss in 2011 from 102.9 to approx 82 kg when I was able to go to the gym 3 times a week. A second born in 2012 since (thanks to weight loss improving fertility....), sleep deprivation and little chance to go out early to the pool when 2 children to get ready/drop off in the morning rather than one, have recalibrated target again with cycling commuting daily as a calorie burning alternative with occasional bonus of cycling commuting via the swimming pool for extra exercise! Not quite as high a starting point (at least not in obese category) but still a fair way to go! At least the 2 year old that was responsible for my relapse into flabbiness seems to like riding on the bike- a bit of extra calories burnt from a >15kg load on the back!

So after 3-4 weeks of pretty much no movement, for some reason this week saw a 800g loss, whch was handy.
Only thing I can think I have changed, is that I have tried to cut out my eating after dinner..........
With a small child in the house, we tend to eat dinner early, 6pm, or sometimes even 5pm - and I would tend to have a bowl of alpen and bran flakes mid evening - probably about 100g all in, as alpen is pretty heavy versus volume - dense I guess we could say, but like myself.
Anyway, not looked into it, but assuming if you are eating closer to bedtime, perhaps your body does not have a chance to do all the things it might be looking to do with the incoming food, before it shuts down for the night.
Will see what happens this coming week - will probably bounce straight back up now I have written this

Am thinking that my listed desired target above might be unobtainable with muscle gain, but perhaps that +2kg might be a happy medium.

We have small children, so exactly my routine. However, I am more in the vein of throughput - i'e high fibre with the added bonus of lots of carbs, so I am in the habit of 3 or even 4 Weetabix, or Shreddies or Shredded wheat (without sugar) at roughly 10pm. I would assume that the Muesli contains more sugars than plain Weetabix.

    Muesli per 100g = 340 calories
    3 Weetabix = 204 calories

4 grams more protein in Weetabix approx.

This has the added bonus of not waking up in the middle of the night hungry as sometimes, after a long ride and watching what I eat post ride, I can eat like a horse.

This whole throughput thing is about keeping the system going. Many talk about how your body shuts down when you miss breakfast and it's better to put something in your stomach to 'get the engine running'. My thinking is that this surely extends to the rest of the day because carbs are not simply carbs as we are not distinguishing the high fibre carbs with the low fibre carbs.
(The average Ugandan sh1ts 2-3 times a day because their diet is rich in roughage) Naturally, we should be going at least twice a day. Makes sense given that bowel Cancer is often associated (not always) with a lack of fibre as the faeces is sitting in the large intestine for too long whilst the contents are oozing all the toxins back into the body. In terms of cycling, shouldn't we be fuelling up with the right carbs and trying to speed up the metabolism if we are trying to loose weight rather than simply burning more calories than we consume? If we slow the system down, are we then multiplying the effects of the calories we consume?

Anyway, it's just a theory and I hope you've all had breakfast

It's all gone pear shaped... literally :? Despite 50 hours of riding in the Alps over 2 weeks equating to ca. 30,000 Kcal, Italian food has done the damage... That's what happens when motivation to lose weight is not strong enough... now I have two weeks to get down to a decent weight... 71.5 would be acceptable at this point in time.

Sugar is off, alcohol is off, pretty much anything is off... :(

Perfect demonstration of the adage diet for weight loss, exercise for fitness.
I'm always astounded by just how easily I can out-eat any amount of exercise. And we've gone and booked 2 holidays to Italy this year, so I'm in trouble!

Very much so... in 2010 during the 5 days of the Raid Pyrenean (probably 30 hours on the saddle and 20,000 Kcal burnt) I put on 2 kg... so not only I have eaten around 6,000 kcal a day to keep the weight (4,000 exercise + 2,000 base), but I have eaten way more... possibly another 2-3,000 kcal per day....

    Good effort!

My worst experience was an all-inclusive week in Cape Verde. Almost no exercise and gluttonous amounts of food and alcohol. I came back like a bull elephant seal in the mating season preparing to intimidate my rivals with displays of lumbering bulk and rippling blubber!

Very good points not losing much weight so far but I think I know why! Today took advantage of a day off while kids at school/nursery and wife at work by checking out Cycle path 27 from Plymouth to Tavistock. Now happily demolished a brunch of eggs royale, side of chips and fruit and ice cream prior to return journey. When my main focus was on swimming before work to lose weight, it worked as was before work and didn't have much breakfast afterwards as had swallowed a fair amount of pool water!
