ah crap ... I tried to be good and fit an extra hours ride in yesterday, which in theory is excellent, however the resulting energy crash and recovery of 4 bowls of cereal, a ham sandwich, 500g of greek yogurt and half a packet of dried fruit has completely negated the entire days exercise ... and then some

really I am not so sure working out helps ! ..... its easier to not eat if you don't do anything
  • I still have difficulty understanding why it's so much harder to lose weight than it is to gain it. Maybe gaining it is so much more fun. Nonetheless, slowly heading in the right direction at last.

I suspect that in part we can blame evolution. We evolved as hunter-gatherers, with an unpredictable supply of food. The ability to quickly store excess calories in times of plenty, and the ability to hang on to them in times of famine would have been essential to survival. However they are traits which are a pain in the (big, flabby) @rse in modern life, with calorie dense foods available 24-7, and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle.

And think about the maths. It's relatively easy to consume an extra 2000 calories a day, but running a 2000 calorie deficit would be pretty extreme. I hate to think what my average daily calorie intake was over the Christmas period. If I had to guess I'd say about 5000 a day, and because my knee was buggered I was doing very little exercise, so I think putting on just 9 pounds was a good result. But I'm giving myself till mid March to shift it completely...

    this all the way

If you try to cut 500 cal a day out of your diet to loose 1lb a week ... its hard work, its like missing an entire breakfast or a shop bought sandwich at lunchtime.

But adding 500cal a day is seriously easy .. a beer and a packet of crisps ... BOOOM ... man boobs .. how about a packet of nuts and an apple extra .. POW ! ... love handles

go to macdonalds for lunch ... PER-CHOW !!!! .... mooms, gut and love handles with back fat !

I guess I am lucky in that respect. If I don't exercise, my appetite is suppressed.
Getting the right balance post ride is a tricky business but I am inclined to almost over eat (for want of a better expression) pre-ride and eat on the ride and then i'm not scoffing everything in sight when I get off the bike. I also find that I have changed my pre-ride food to accommodate that.
If I eat well pre-ride, I find i'm not hitting rock bottom after the ride. Maybe (and we're all unique) that works for me and if the body post ride is craving calorie and blood sugar replacement, it's more likely to go into storage?

a packet of Mcoys chilli crisps is 250kcal ... so that only leaves 250kcal for beer ... so 1 1/4 pints

You're also lucky that you listen to your appetite. I know I'm guilty of eating for reasons other than hunger.

Your posts are starting to remind me of the classic 'Raisins for weight loss' thread.

Fasting day today. Box of fudge appeared on the office bird table first thing, but successfully ignoring it. Now joined by a platter of sandwiches, one of cakes, and some fruit all left over from a meeting.

    Staying strong so far...

    Please no.

I just scoffed two huge tomato, mature cheddar and ham, panini's plus a handful of mixed nuts but I don't feel gulty; 40 miles in the bloody cold and drizzle and i'm bloody hungry. If it wassn't for this thread, I would be raiding the biscuit barell and looking for Mrs Pinno's secret stash of dark chocolate.

Speaking of which, I had better go pick her up  Bollox.

I only eat when I'm hungry which is often, rarely if ever sweets crisps and never cake, in fact I don't like puddings of any kind.

Beer on the other hand is my weakness
