Silly Commuter Weight Loss

you guys that aren't losing weight; are you actually doing anything really different?
Just riding more when we all already ride 'loads' or eating a bit less when most of us tend to eat healthily with occassional lapses isn't going to make any difference.
You need to try a whole different approach. The low-carb/carb-free or Atkins diet (whatever you want to call it) is a real change in eating behaviour which i made while keeping the same mileage up.
Lost a stone in 2 weeks.
I'm back on the carbs now but don't/can't eat as many carbs as I used to and so consequently have kept off the weight.FCN = 40 -

400+ km week 16PRs on strava, 3 pints only in 7 days, and stuck to diet so no unhealthy food; put on two frikkin kilos.
No cycling. No PRs. 5 pints on Thursday. Stuck to a diet of unhealthy food (I can't walk past an easter egg without eating one). Lost 2 kilos.
Go figure.
Just done easter shopping and lots of chocolate involved - I am hoping that I can follow your lead; although I am certain I will put on again.
Will be switching to longer commute through your part of the world (I think) from Easter onwards - give me a wave as you sail past on Woodford New Road etc; I will be the one struggling along on the white Whyte hybrid
Cycling alone won't lose you any weight. During autumn/winter I was cycling over 200 Km a week and put on 3-4 Kg. Unless you go on a diet, you will just eat more as you cycle moreleft the forum March 20230 -
I disagree I'm cycling 200-250 miles a week pushing harder and looking for more hills to climb and I can't eat enough at the moment.
My weight loss this year is very gradual as I'm hoping to stay in 160lb range for good.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

LOL, I think both me and Ugo are saying the same thing.
I've cycled 150 to 300 km per week since 2009. when i first started ramping up my miles, mainly via cycle commuting in 2009 then of course i lost weight. but the body is an amazing thing and it adjusted and got used to doing that.
Hence in November 2015 I was still riding this kind of distance but was putting on weight and hit my heaviest ever.

Why the need for exotic diet plans / carb fear / whatever? Isn't a slightly negative calorie balance going to drop weight?0

Well I am down from 110 kilograms when I started cycling in 2012 to between 75-80 so I am pretty sure that it is mainly eating less than you need. The need can be changed by exercise in short term and by change in body muscle mass longer term - but it is still a pretty strict accounting. As dhope mentioned some diets will just not give you the wherewithall to actually get decent exercise done, per mtb-idle some diets subtly change your biochemical energy usage, and yet others will allow you to feel sated with less intake; but fundamentally it is like the opposite of Mr Micawber's recipe for happiness0

(OMG he's back...)
Weight Loss = every one is different.
Me, I find its a careful balance.
How much I eat. Too little (900 calories of healthy, low carb, lean protein diet a day with exercise) and my body will cling onto what little calories I'm feeding it. Also it's hard to find the energy to exercise.
Eat too much of the same and I'm just burning off what I've used and storing the excess = weight gain. So eating the right amount is important. For me, I keep it at 1200 - 1400 calories (given my extreme weight loss goals).
When I eat is important. I used to eat three meals a day. Now, I try eating the same quantity but spread over the day, so I eat something little (like a piece of fruit) every two hours when at work. If your metabolism is raised through exercise it will keep burning calories and fat even after the exercise has finished. Smaller amounts of food are easier to burn than large amounts so I don't overload my metabolism with a large breakfast or lunch for example.
What I eat
Green Juice (avocado, kale, spinach, flax and chia seeds as the core foundation)
Banana
lean protein and salad - lunch
Apple
Nuts
Dinner which is a larger iteration of lunch but maybe with a small carb.
Saturdays - normal
Sunday - Cheat day so I can enjoy Sunday dinner
Exercise, Mon, Wed and Fri 30-45 min lunchtime sessions in the gym. Tue and Thurs 1-2hr sessions after work. Sunday on the bike. I tailor my exercises for what I need to do.
The most important thing, making sustainable changes. I could lose weight more suddenly and I could go on an even more extreme diet but that's not sustainable for me. Gradual change so it becomes my new norm, while educating and changing my attitude to food is. For this to stick for me it needs to be a lifestyle change. No point going on a diet I don't enjoy.
I was 18 stone (115kg) late Feb, I'm under 17 (107kg) as of today. Still got a long way to go.Food Chain number = 4

I seem to fluctuate quite a lot depending on how much beer I drinks. Weird. Anyway, I'm banking this one because I think it's about average at the moment - I've been sub-80 and almost back up to 85 in the last two weeks...0 -
The lightest I've been recently was 82.5kg on Fryday afternoon about an hour after eating a large fry up. Surely this means I should eat more bacon.0
