    Does anyone have any recommendations for calorie intake calculators/theory? I'm having a look at my diet and trying to gauge how many calories I need for my height, weight, bmi, activity level etc but I'm getting a very wide amount of readings (1800 to 3500) from various websites.

    I've given MyFitnessPal a go in the last few weeks. It reckons I should be on 1810 calories a day, which was based on me wanting to drop a pound a week, putting in my height and weight and saying I was slightly active (job-wise that is, in that I sit at a desk).
    Then it syncs with Strava and iPhone accelerometer etc and adjusts depending on what I record.

    I've averaged 3000 calories a day over the last 2 1/2 weeks, 'earning' 1100 (a day) through exercise. So I guess I've not hit what it wants me to do, but still close enough.

    I'm sure the numbers aren't spot on (either exercise or food), but it's probably not so far out as to be useless. And I do seem to have lost a little.

  • As a very rough indication, it's 2000 a day + 500 per hour of intense exercise (cycling for instance). If you have a manual job it might be more like 2500-3000 as a baseline. If you are a big guy (> 90 Kg), it might be more, if you are a small guy (< 60 Kg) it might be less

    Interesting, thanks. 2000 seems a reasonable number, I'm 63kg. From todays count I was on 1880 so it appears I'm in the ball park and its down to experimentation with different things.

    If I keep my weekly miles about 180+ I can continue to eat and drink like a navy frigate in fact my body fat has dropped considerably since Xmas and my weight is the same, all good news

  • Interesting, thanks. 2000 seems a reasonable number, I'm 63kg. From todays count I was on 1880 so it appears I'm in the ball park and its down to experimentation with different things.

    Counting calories is only easy if you eat ready meals (assuming they don't lie on the package). If you cook for yourself, it's difficult to account for the splash of extra olive oil and such... but yes at your weight I would say 2000 is a reasonable number if you are not overly active.

    Goddamn it, so am I. A crash and 4 nights of appalling sleep due to ill kids and have destroyed my motiviation to cycle so been on the PT for most of the last 2 weeks, but not changed my eating habit! :(
    Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.

    I am half a kilo above my start weight - but that's good cos I was 1.5kg above my start weight before I cut back on the beer. The act of filling in that form seemed to add 2kg almost instantly

    I'm doing terribly at the moment. Really struggling to budget calories and manage the commute, I either undershoot by a mile and struggle to get home or eat too much crap and can't shift the weight. I think I'm where I attempted to start from, +/- some tenths of a lb.

    I am normally strong in the morning and less so on my way home, as I eat less than I consume. I carry a gel for those times when I have nothing inside... it gest me home fine... typically it happens once a week or less

    Shift lunch back a bit later, or spread it out?
    I've binned the customary 2nd breakfast unless I'm at the gym at lunch. Have then been starting the still fairly big lunch at 12 but eating it in stages, as 12, 2 and 4pm.

    I need to do something, I'm fine in the morning and can do my ride in before breakfast no problem. I'm logging my food at the moment so I can see where I'm going write/wrong and going to do a bit more reading.

    Current commute is 20 miles each way and is taking 1:30 each way on average trying harder on the way home, obvs.

    Edit- I like the staged lunch dhope, problem is I struggle to stop once I've started :?
