Let's say mine has stabilised at the 75kg mark which is to say I can't seem to shift that last 5 because each time I get close I lose all ability to stop eating and drinking crap and I lose all momentum and go back up a bit. Easter weekend was ruinous.

Don't be surprised if your weight shoots up when you start eating carbs again, water retention. Eating no carbs and losing weight isn't losing fat, its water more than anything else!

but i havent been not eating carbs. just not been eating enough to maintain race efforts.

i structured my eating around racing yesterday and thats the approach im going to take. if my weight stays where it is then im happy.

Right, two weeks in and this is sodding dull, the joy of going to bed with full on excitement over my 40g of porridge the following morning is pretty galling.

Two quick questions regarding longish rides (60k+)

    1) Eat a lot the night before as well as for breakfast on the day, i'm not tempted to stuff myself at lunch as well, also, should this be carb heavy?
    2) While riding, paniagua with some Gels to keep you going or Energy drink throughout, I read somewhere the latter can help you burn more calories.

If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

I think you need to be careful not to be tempted to eat more than you burn. 60k is going to be somewhere between 2 and 3 hours - that's in the 1200 - 1800kcal (max) range. You can make quite a dent in that if you're not careful. You should be able to do it on just a good breakfast and some food along the way plus a bit as "recovery" after you stop. The temptation is to kid yourself several times over (been there and done that). I've been training quite a bit but I did 160k on my usual porridge & banana breakfast and coffee and Danish (filling station paltry size of both), energy bar, coffee and slice of apple pie en route with only Zero tabs in my drink. I burned around 4000kcals (according to my power meter). Probably ate something similar on the 130k and 2200m I did on the Sat before.

Try to embrace the hunger. I find drinking sparkling water quite a good distraction.

I'm happily embracing the hunger, i'm much better at an extreme than just trying to do a little bit of dieting (please note that does not mean I'm just drinking water).

My aim is to be able to ride decent distances and keep decent strength up, this weekend I did a 104k group ride averaging 28.5k, having thought i'd eaten pretty well, I still felt bloody awful by the end.

If you've really depleted your glycogen through dieting (like I'm sure the 5-2 does on the fasting days) then, for sure you'll be in trouble. In that case, yes, eat the day before (the earlier the better), have a good breakfast and eat well on the ride. If you aren't planning on riding again soon after the ride, that's probably the time to eat just some protein.

3 weeks ago I still hadn't lost anything, in fact I'd gained some and was very close to 19st. A doctors visit for an unrelated problem, showed very high blood pressure (197/128). So stopped drinking (I was drinking far too much) and started a low fat, low salt diet with lots of fruit and veg. Purchased a blood pressure monitor and been monitoring it for last three weeks; it's been slowly coming down. This morning I weighed in at 17st 12lbs lost over a stone in 3 weeks, blood pressure this morning was 123/93 still high but a lot better. I feel great, being sober for 21 days is interesting feeling!

Today was first day on bike in a month, doctor had said to take it easy "light cardio" was his words, so this morning's ride I tried to keep heart rate below 140, resulting in 25 min longer commute, a 12mph moving average, and an average HR of 124bpm. Got scalped all over the place, which was frustrating! Checking older stats 140>150bpm is normal average for me on a commute. Waiting now for an appointment for a 24hour blood pressure monitor to be fitted. Next target is to break the 17stone barrier for the first time in at least 15 years...

After a weekend which contained BBQ's with drinking and very posh meal out I had gone back up to 83.7kg? this morning I had lost 1.3kg compared to yesterday and am now back at 82kg. Despite modest eating (in now way debauched stuffing my face with products made of Lard) I have lost a week's worth of effort.

Well done Chris, good luck with the continuing weight loss.
  • I've been waiting for Sketchley to provide an update for a while, as we had a similar starting point. Good to see you're heading in the right direction. :)

Similar to you, my blood pressure was high when I went to the hospital with an unrelated problem. Around 150/95 from memory. I needed to get it checked out as high blood pressure runs in the family. Went to Docs and have been waiting for ages to get the 24hr monitor, booked in a week on Monday for it. W

Was 17s 1lb this morning, started at 19st 4lb.

I dropped to 162lbs before my holiday two weeks ago but now back around 170lbs however my body fat is down and my waist is several inches smaller, the trouble is i have a muscle non-cyclist build and any hard exercise I gain muscle up top as well, still the guns are looking good again!

    ....

Went into the Doctors today and I'm now wearing the 24 hour blood pressure monitor.
It gives readings every 20 minutes during the daytime, and 1 reading per hour after 10pm.
It gives off a beep before and after... I've got a feeling it's going to be a long night

Did that last week. Didn't get a good night sleep. However results back today mean pressure was 135/79 so no meds for me. Looks like not drinking and loosing 1.5 stones has done the trick. Still more to do though.

What idiot designed a monitor that beeps during the night time when you are supposed to be sleeping?

I'm sure that would put your BP up, thus giving false results.

  • Ahh, looks like there's a night mode built into the device.. No beep, but still a reading every hour, it hasn't been a good night. Will be interesting to see the results as the reading varied significantly during the day.

  • Average BP over the 24 hours was 133/86.
Nurse seemed ok with it but I will be having a phone consultation with the Doc next week.

Bit higher diastolic than mine but I doubt they will put you on drugs at that level. Diet should sort the rest out, cut out / down on alcohol, salt and caffeine then low fat, plenty of fruit and veg..... Lost 1st 10lbs in 7 weeks so far.
