Jeezo. It's about you assuming that since Supersonic had a bad word to say about the Five, he must not have ridden one.
Though it's pretty interesting to find out that it's just you seeing your own failings in everyone else. Don't worry though, not everyone is like that.Uncompromising extremist0 -
haha, great thread.
As a fellow orange user I have to admit price is steep but bikes perform as they should and I would buy another.
I think orange know they have a cult like following....Elmo is my dad0 -
Northwind you are bringing the "I've got a chip on my shoulder" attitude of STW over onto these lovely forums. Please calm down.
Remove Supersonic from the list of people that haven't ridden one but have decided they are crap, insert your name instead.
Yeehaa you are one crazy mofo!0 -
Northwind is bang on the money though. And he knows what angry means, since I've ridden him. He doesn't know it, mind. The beauty of cloroform.0
-
I would say he is way off the mark.
I prefer rohypnol, thats what I'm going to use on him.0 -

Genius... Why do you think I've never ridden a Five? This is exactly what I'm criticising you for and in response, you do it again! Telling me I've got a chip on my shoulder amidst all of this is pretty funny when it's obvious you've got a bit of a problem.
But the icing on the cake, for me, is that you think I've "decided they are crap". I like Fives.
I just don't like hypocritical fanbois.Uncompromising extremist0 -
I just don't like hypocritical fanbois.
Which I'm not.
So now we are friends, can I ride you without using the rohypnol?0 -
Do you just not understand what hypocrite means? Hang on, here's a nice example I read earlier:dubmodder wrote:I used to say exactly the same things, even argued on forums about how the Five was over priced, too heavy, single pivot, blah blah blah. A few years later I rode one, now I own one.dubmodder wrote:Also there are people on here with "opinions" of them that haven't even sat on one, let alone ridden one! That pisses me off more I can tell you.
FWIW, Yeehaa's got nowt to be proud of... See, even with the Tintin-style knockout drugs, your victim should be at least aware they've been stealthily buttsecksed the next morning. Bit of discomfort at least. If he can make his escape without the victim even suspecting, then I reckon he must have a knob the size of a cadbury's chocolate finger.Uncompromising extremist0 -

Either that, or he has a massive one and I have an ar$ehole the size of the dartford tunnelUncompromising extremist0

So we aren't friends then?0

Well of course I do. If I was normally proportioned, I wouldn't have to use my unconventional methods

This thread has suddenly become funny because of dubmodder's series of fails and also the mighty yeeha!0

Of course, it could also be said that northwind didn't feel a thing because he is Scotland's biggest ar*ehole.0

Ohh  that is rather damning isn't it. Can't see him getting out of that one without moving..
I want to ride an Orange 5Cube Hanzz Pro FRSquarepants wrote:It's not that I'm over over biked, my bike is under personed...0 -

but have decided they are crap
But I've not said that!
I get why people like them. Same with my Zaskar - I like it, loads don't for many reasons. I don't go proclaiming that until you have ridden one you will be converted etc, and that it has special angles that cost money.
Well actually, I do think the 5 is crap, but hey ho ;-)
But I always appreciate people who say they have tested a bike and it is the bike for them. I repsect that.0 -
I like the way the 5 looks.
I don't like the price, neither do I like the spec of some of their bikes.
I didn't like the first couple I rode, but I did really like the last one I rode.
I wouldn't buy one though. My brain tells me it would be stupid.0 -
So... back on topic. I started 'project Five Bar Gate' last night. The normal course of action in such matters, when needing to acquire a bike would be simply to go and buy one. I have found that effective in many occasions previously where I need a bike through lack of one, or simply mouthing off about how the bike in question is crap, and then having to rise to a challenge.
However, since Mrs P decided she needed a bigger garden, which had to come attached to a bigger house so that Jnr P could have more space to spread all her stuff about, cash is a little tight for ooooh, say the next lifetime, so I decided against the straight purchase route. I did think to myself that I should at least look at what it would have cost me to buy one before calling my buddy Chris from our local Orange dealer and borrowing a demo for the day.
So, I specced up a Five Pro with as close as I could get to what I currently have on my Blur LT, and the price was...
£3541.99!!
Bear in mind that this bike still has a mainly SLX drivetrain, dodgy hope brakes, and some Race Face OEM nonsense too:
Five Pro
RRP £3,541.99

Saddle Fizik Gobi XM
H Bars Easton Haven Carbon Low
Pedals Flat
B Bracket Race Face X Type
I thought to myself, how much is just a frame when the bike is this much?
£1499 (inc RP23).
OK, thats wierd. The frame seems to be OK value (still too much IMHO but in the ballpark at least), so whats with the bike price? I decided to price up something similar. A quick trip to Merlin and I had this spec ready to go:
Full XT drivetrain
XT Brakes
Hope Evo Hoops on Flows
Reverb Post
Saddle
X4 Stem
Havoc bars
Same tyres
Hope Headset
Grips & Skewers
Tubes
Seatpost clamp
XT SPD Trail Pedals
Total Cost?
£1541.89!
That leaves me £2000.10 to secure frame and forks; and I am pretty freakin' sure I could walk into any orange dealer and get that deal done in a heart beat. I can imagine the conversation now....
'Hey Chris'
'Hey Ben, how are you?'
'Good thanks, can I have a Orange Five frame and those (he says pointing) Fox forks for 2 Grand?'
'How are you paying?'
'Debit Card'
'OK, sure, its a deal. Fed up with the Santa Cruz for some reason?'
'Its a long story'....
So, I have acquired an imaginary Orange five Pro with FULL XT, including pedals, and otherwise equivalent spec to that I got from Orange for 10p less than buying it from Orange.
It is official. Orange Bikes ARE overpriced. The economics of buying from Orange just don't stack up! When I buy a complete bike its because its cheaper not MORE expensive! Why would anyone buy a complete Orange bike? It makes no sense.
And before anyone argues I could get a discount on the whole bike, I can assure you if I put 30 minutes of effort in I could get the parts quite a bit cheaper too by shopping around.
So, having established Orange BIKES are infact overpriced. We move onto Orange FRAMES. That will be at the weekend or maybe the following one depending on what my local dealer has available. I will keep you posted.A Flock of Birds
+ some other bikes.0 -
Damn it, ive lurked this thread for too long!!!
So just to add my tuppence worth, I think the 5 is......................ok.
I think there are better bikes for the money and Orange bikes are generally overpriced.
And yes that opinion is only my opinion and yes I have ridden one before."Didn't hurt"0
