Does anyone know the reach and drop of the standard bars I am trying to work out if I need a shorter stem (<90mm) or bars with a shorter reach and drop.

    thanks

    Oops! Wrong topic.

  • I've just finished ordering all the bits to build up one of the few Equilibriums to be found in Australia. Build probably won't be finished until mid January but consists of...

54cm Genesis Equilibrium frame + fork (via ukbikesdepot)
    Fulcrum Racing 3 wheelset
    SRAM Apex groupset (no brakes)
    Easton / Ritchley finishing kit
    Shimano R451 brakes
    ...and some other bits.

I haven't ordered the stem yet as I want to do a partial assemble first and make sure I buy the right length. I'm going with a black+white finishing kit which I haven't seen posted yet, so I'll add pics as soon as it's done.

That'll make at least three in Aus. :D

Sounds like it's going to be a very pretty bike.

    PS. Mine's black and white
  • PS. Mine's black and white
Yeah, yours certainly is "black and white" :) I probably should have been more specific... Mine's a 2013 copper/orange frameset with black + white finishing.

The idea of an equilibrium first got me because I thought I could build a comfortable, modern, fast-enough bike that looked like a classic by using all silver bits to finish it. When I went to order everything, I couldn't bring myself to spent AU$2k+ and have a bike that looks like a $500 ebay bike. The sacrifice though is that I expect a "modern" build to attract more attention from people wanting to race on the way to work - more effort, but probably better for my fitness :)

I am currently running a 56 equilibrium but am finding the bar drop, about 3 inches way too uncomfortable. I am thinking of moving to a 58 or maybe a 60 as I can adjust the reach with a 90/ 80mm stem.

I am not worried about standover as I am pretty sure I can clear the 60cm.

I can't afford new again. Is my best bet to get a frame in the sales or a secondhand bike?

Also is Evans likely to do their 25% off anytime soon?

    Thanks

UK Bikes Depot have an ex display 58cm Equilibrium 20 for £900. Or if you're anywhere near Manchester I have a 58cm frame that I'd consider swapping for a 56cm.

Just in case anyone is remotely interested, I am giong to sell the standard fork on my bike and get another one with an uncut steerer, or if someone fancies a swap for a carbon fork that takes mudguards, drop me a line.

    cheers

I love those colours, but they're only the prototype colours they use for every bike. They should release them!

Yep, classiest colour scheme they do, but they keep it to themselves :(

    Rust proofing ?
Lots of rides in the rain lately on my new Equilibrium with full guards.
What measures should I take to reduce corrosion? Maybe you can advise on the frame and components.
    Ck.

Ideally spray some Waxoyl inside the frame and slosh it all around, grease the seatpost heavily and block off any breather holes (I noticed some the other day at the end of the chainstays inside the dropout cups, only obvious with the bike up at eye level in a work stand). Block them with silicone sealant or similar. At least we both have full mudguards.

I will need to get one of these, but you might manage to do it without:

The Genesis Volare looks tasty. Won its debut race today against a field of carbon.

Very nice stumpy, in the best colour too.
  • Hi there folks I have finally joined the ranks of the equilibrium owners. I started building up a 54cm 2013 frame today and should get it finished tomorrow, I would have had it done today but i was transferring everything over from my old bike and forgot I didn't have the shims to reduce the size of the front derailour band from 31.8 to 28.6.

The only problem I have come across is that the bottle cage bosses on the seatube seem to be very low, when I attach the derailour the band is between the bosses so when the bottle cage goes on it will be slightly uneven because of the band being in the middle, is this normal? Even allowing for the size of the frame there would still be enough space to have the bosses above the band and access the bottle ok.

Roll on Sunday cos even if it is raining I am going out to try it out. :D

You just need to put spacers on the bolts between the bottle cage and frame, Presta valve stem nuts will fit, job done.
  • Thanks nigglenoo I never considered something as simple as that, I've just tried it and it works perfectly!

    New bits:

Genesis Equilibrium 2011 52cm frame in cherry red: £240 posted
Cannodale Ultra Slice carbon forks (SJS special offer) £60 + £5 delivery
Headset FSA Orbit X from Wiggle, £29
Tektro R737 deep drop brakes, £33
Tiagra 9-speed triple front mech £25

@nigglenoo (and/or other size 52 riders), do you mind me asking how tall you are? I'm on the verge of ordering an Equilibrium frame to build up, and can't decide whether I should go 52 or 54. I test rode a 52 at Evans and it felt OK size-wise, but there was no 54 to compare it with. I'm between 5ft 6 and 5ft 7, normal proportions. Current bike has similar length VTT to the 54 but I do get some lower back discomfort on longer rides, so wonder if I may be a touch stretched on it. Any replies from other smallish riders much appreciated - thanks...
  • I am 5'6" and fairly short in the legs and long in the back, the TT length of the 52 is comparable with my previous roadbike. My stem is also fairly short and raised, but then I am 49 and mostly riding Audax and relaxed day rides. Hope that helps.

That's great - thanks for your help. I'm 49 too and the back isn't quite as flexible as it used to be. I reckon I could probably get a good fit on either, by picking the right stem/spacer combination, but might prefer the extra bar height of the 54.
