Can't wait to give it a blast.
To be honest, it's just JonnyTrousers going on and on and on about it. The rest of us know that red bikes go faster.
Congratulations, and welcome to the club.0 -
Ta. All setup now with the Edge 800. Just need to find the time to ride it now. Think I'll have to wait until Saturday am.0

Hey! I can't help it if I've been cursed with great taste!0 -
To be fair, Ive just had mine powder coated........black
The original paint is shite, it almost just falls off. I removed a piece of heli tape and it even took a huge chunk of paint off with it.0 -
Hello Equilibrium riders,
I just joined the forum after having read this thread. I'm almost decided on buying an Equilibrium frame to replace my current winter frame (a size 54 alu Orbea, which doesn't have room for mudguards).
I won't be able to try one before buying though: I'm Belgian, and there's no Genesis dealer to be found around these parts.
So, I have a couple of questions...
- About the geometry, specifically seat tube length: the geometry chart/image on the Genesis web site (http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/frames/equilibrium/geometry) seems to imply that the given seat tube length for a frame is a "virtual" length: the dotted line goes higher than the seat tube. But I find it hard to believe that this dotted line would be only 510mm long for a size 54 frame.
Can anyone here confirm if the seat tube lengths given by Genesis are actual seat tube lengths, or "virtual" ones?
- Since I'll have to buy mailorder, any recommendations for a UK mailorder dealer?
Thanks for any help you can give me :-)

I think the frame size is the virtual height, and that the seat tube length is the one in the geometry. I bought my frameset from http://www.realcycles.com, they were the cheapest and it arrived in a week. Never bought a full bike from them, so I don't know how it would turn up, though.0

Some very good news means I'm going to have to sell my brand new, not even been outside, complete with receipt Equilibium 20. 58cm, with equally new SPD-SLs. £800 to the first to view.
I'm in London, SE25 nr Crystal Palace.
PM me if you're interested. Collection only.

The seat tube is 51cm, ignore the dotted line! I don't know why they've extended the line like that; obviously the dotted line above the top tube is showing that the 54.5cm measurement is the horizontal distance from head tube to seatpost rather than the actual measurement of the sloping top tube. It is a full compact frame.0 -
Michael,
I bought from ukbikesdepot.com who give a good discounted price but once you've bought you're on your own as there's no customer service to speak of - but I guess you're going to be in that position anyway, being in Belgium.0 -
Yeah I queried the geometry with Genesis and they confirmed the seat tube illustration was misleading - that was over 7 months ago and they've yet to correct it!
I also bought mine from ukbikesdepot.com but the frameset is now about £100 more than I paid. They do have a 56cm ex display Equilibrium 10 for £700 though.0 -
You're a very helpful bunch - thanks! Looks like I'll have a size 54 then.
And also thanks for the dealer pointers; if you have others, I'm all ears.0 -
When the 2013 bikes are realeased could I build a better bike than the 20 for the same money??
I I could has anyone got a list with prices of what I would need to get?0 -
I doubt it - you don't get the bulk buying discount.0

I actually reckon you could if you bought cleverly. I suppose it might depend on how much you spend on workshop costs. Mine will have cost me a fair amount more than an off-the-peg 20, but it's also a fair amount nicer.0 -
The list price for the Equilibrium is pretty steep. If you can get discounts on components you can probably build up something better specced for less money. When I got mine up I looked at what it'd cost to build something with an equivalent spec to the 20 (keeping the 105 shifters/mechs, RS10 wheels, tektro brakes but with SRAM Rival chainset/BB and Deda bar/stem/seatpost) and it came to less than £900 at the time.
In the end I went for more 2nd hand but higher spec components (Dura Ace/Ultegra) and spent less than £800 all in including extras such as mudguards and pedals.
If you're thinking of building up your own I'd look at places like Merlin and Ribble Cycles for good deals on components.0 -
A question for those of you who built their Equilibriums themselves: did you treat the inside of the frame with some kind of rust preventive?0

I've been offered a 2011 10 for £350 with full guards. How does that sound?0

Seems like a reasonable thing to do for a winter frame. I should be able to find a similar product around here. Thanks!0 -

Ah yes, Belgium. I used this stuff:

Either that or you should be able to get Waxoyl without too much trouble.0 -
I've been looking for a decent winter bike for some time now to add to my stable of three, a Focus Izalco Pro SRAM Force, a Sean Kelly Vitus Edition w SRAM Red and a Boardman Road Team w Rival.
I have been using the Boardman with Raceblades long and it's been just ok, the bike is superb but the clearance is tight and I am now using this bike exclusively on the Turbo Trainer.
A new 2008 Grey Equilibrum with 853 tubing and Ultegra \ 105 mix has come up for sale at a good price but more or less the same as a new 2012 with Tiagra. Should I go for the 2012 model or the 2008, from what I can see the 853 tubing seems to be a better option than the current tubing on 2012 models. As a SRAM rider not sure about the subtle difference in groups. I have heard that 2012 Tiagra is superb.0 -
The 725 is much better than the 853.0
-
-
Yes it seems to be the earliest, the graphics on the frame are totally different to 2012.
I have been looking around at 853 vs 725 on custom frame builder sites and 853 always costs a lot more.0 -
Sorry, I was confused, 853 is the better option. I got mixed up with the 520. Apologies.0
