Gents - is there any way to create a unique metric?
For instance - I would like to look over all my results and find the best 3 or 4 minute intervals (as opposed to the 1- or 5-minute standard that already exists).
I know I can do it on a ride-by-ride basis - but is there a way to do it so I can view across all rides?

This came up on the list recently too. There is no way of doing this for metrics at present. It is relatively trivial to add - let the user define additional periods to track and compute them.
Intrestingly the most common request is for 2,3,4 mins so might just add those as a temporary measure. I guess everyone is doing v02max intervals at the moment!!--

3 minutes equates to some lab testing I did and 4 minutes is my pursuit time so useful to measure power over that interval. I can do with the 2 minute one0

Hey guys, getting on with GC pretty well, however...just uploaded my workout from tonight (monday) and it seems to add it on to last weeks "Skiba power" bar chart...strange?0

I'm assuming you are looking at a metric chart binned in weeks?
Try making the date range start on a monday (rightclick the date range and edit details)...
Let me know if that fixes it? Or if my assumptions are incorrect !--
Obsessed is just a word elephants use to describe the dedicated. http://markliversedge.blogspot.com0 -
Sorry, it seems like it would fix it but how do you "edit details"? Do you mean just select one of "14 days", "21 days"...etc?0
-
Ah ok. This is a bug. Mixing weekly binning with 'last n days' (i.e. 7 14 21) doesn't work properly. It has been reported and will get fixed.
Sorry bout that.
I tend to chart by season and always make sure my season starts on a Monday
Must fix this one, since it is so annoying!!--

Thanks dude! I normally plan on Sunday and thus new week on Monday.0

Been using GCv2 for a moth or so now. There's a lot that I don't (yet) know how to use - I would RTFM is there was one ;-) - but I'm happy with it.
@liversedge - is there there a "proper" place to report problems? I had a strange one today. The Ride Summary page was reporting:
Warning: 45.833 minutes into the ride, time jumps backwards by 0.117 minutes; ignoring it.
Warning: 71.683 minutes into the ride, time jumps backwards by 0.183 minutes; ignoring it.
Warning: 72.683 minutes into the ride, time jumps backwards by 0.083 minutes; ignoring it.
Warning: 189.383 minutes into the ride, time jumps backwards by 0.033 minutes; ignoring it.
Not had this problem appear before. Data was downloaded as normal from a PT using the USB cradle.
Whilst I'm here, one for the wish list  : is there a way that I can get rid of the Altitude scale on the Ride Plot? My device doesn't record altitude, so the scale is useless & takes up a lot of screen real estate.
Thanks!0 -

we have a bug logger, same place as the wiki (docs) over at http://bugs.goldencheetah.org. Is that a .fit file ?--
Obsessed is just a word elephants use to describe the dedicated. http://markliversedge.blogspot.com0 -
Pardon the ignorance, what's a ".fit" file?
Thanks for the wiki link - so far I've been following my nose with regard to the software.0 -

Its a new binary format from Garmin. Used on the 500 I think, maybe the 800 too, not sure.--

just a quick comment to say I've been browsing the Wiki feature and the new help guides are excellent! Learned loads to help me tailor and set up GC a little better, and with my PM now on order I'm really looking forward to using this in 2011.
cheers guys 8)Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -
I have been using TRIMP scores so far as my PT wheel is due later this month, and have been gradually building up a decent amount of data. I have also been reading, and re-reading, the Coggan & Hunter power book and have learned loads more.
I'm interested int he PM area and have some questions about the absolute 'training stress' numbers. In the book all the references are to the TrainingPeaks obviously, but they talk about TSS scores of about 100 TSS per day as being the typical maximum level an average rider can sustain.
So my questions are:
1. are the 'Exponentially Weighted Average Stress' numbers the exact same as those quoted for TainingPeaks, as I did read somewhere here the algorithm is essentially the same?
2. When Coggan mentions a TSS per day, does he mean an average? eg if I trained 3 days in 5 and each ride had a TSS of 150, then the average for the 5 day period would be 90 but each day would obviously be well above the 100 - I assume this is what he means?
3. When I get my PT and start using Bikescore, will these stress numbers change and make the old data redundant, or are the scores comparable and allow me to use the months of data recorded with the TRIMP scores as well?

1. BikeScore = TSS, xPower = NP, Relative Intensity = IF
2. Need the context.
3. Kinda, we have found that TRIMP does track BikeScore/TSS in many circumstances, so plot them together and see!--

on p154-155 of the Coggan book, in the section about CTL & ATL, he talks about an 'optimal CTL' of 100-150 TSS per day and also mentions most cyclists can increase their CTL at a rate of 3-7 TSS per day per week.
I was wondering whether the numbers for that are the same numbers in GC, and if he means an average CTL across a week or if he means per day you train? Hope that makes sense?Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -

- TSS is a daily stress score derived from your power meter data for each day.
- CTL is an exponentially weighted moving average of those TSS, so there is no averaging of CTL. It already is an average (just not a straight ol' regular average).
In layman's terms, CTL represents your training loads over the last few months (and ATL represents your training loads over last few weeks). They are calculated in exactly the same manner, just one uses a longer time constant (e.g .42 days) than the other (5-10 days).
Train more this week than you have typically over last couple of months, and CTL will go up. There is a limit to how much you can raise CTL week to week over the medium term and not get injured, burned out, increase susceptibility to illness etc, hence the 3-7 TSS/day per week guideline.
This recommendation goes back to work done by those of us on the Performance Manager beta test group with amateur, club, masters and professional riders and noting the patterns associated with training and performance outcomes.
What any one rider can sustain as CTL growth depends on their individual circumstances, fitness, training history, recovery time, rest of life factors etc etc.
See here for another explanation:

* although as has been pointed out in another recent thread, xPower does stuff to ride files that NP doesn't, and presumably this might affect interpreting these metrics in an absolute number comparison. The principles would be the same though.0 -
Thanks Alex - I get it now!
PT arrived and first ride done, so the data collection is starting. Will be a little while before I do the Coggan test as I have some tough rides coming up and wont be well rested for a little while. Looking forward to getting a first stab at an FTP value although already have a feel for where it lies.Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -

This must be new material in the latest edition of the book - can't find it in edition 1. Does this mean then that as part of a training plan that you should try to build TSS by no more than approx (20 -50) in each successive week?0 -
I seem to be having a problem...
EVERY time I click 'Weekly Summary' I get the spinning ball and then GC closes. Its been happening 100% of the time for about a week now. Any clues?Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -
I have a similar problem, every time I look at TRIMP on the PM GC crashes0
-
Joey,
Can you email me your metricDB ? Its in the athlete directory. Also, does it crash whilst refreshing the metrics ?
Cheers,
Mark--

If you give me a few more instructions I certainly can. It displays the PM based on bikescore, but seems to crash when I select TRIMP in the bottom right hand corner.0

Help - About GoldenCheetah, then click on file URL it will open a folder with your ride files in it. In there you will see a file metricDB. Email that to me liversedge gmail. I'll take a look. You might also want to check your HR settings in Tools - Options to make sure you have set your LTHR settings.
Cheers,
Mark--
Obsessed is just a word elephants use to describe the dedicated. http://markliversedge.blogspot.com0 -
ah, I will confess I haven't set my LTHR (I had completely forogotten about that!) Do you still want the file or is that what will cause the problem?
Thanks.0 -
I wonder if someone can help me undo the mess I've made of GC on my Windows 7 laptop.
I can't remember exactly how this happened, but I had set up the portable mode and then tried to remove it and go back to normal. Now I can't find my ride data! If I go to Cyclist --> Open I see a number of cyclists that I've created trying to sort this out. I pick one of them and it loads. I then go to Help --> About Golden Cheetah and the ride data should be stored in C:/Program Files/GoldenCheetah/Library/GoldenCheetah/cyclist name. So I click on the link and I get a WIndows message telling me the location doesn't exist. If I create a new cyclist then I just get the same. I I search for the folder 'Mike' or whatever I've called the new cyclist I've created nothing is found. I've uninstalled GC and reinstalled, but the ghost cyclists still exist and new cyclists I create are similarly absent when I try to view where the files should be stored.
Its not the end of the world as I run GC from a memory stick and it works fine, but its a bit slow so I'd like to get GC working again on the laptop so I can run GC from it and just have the data backed up on the memory stick.
Can someone please tell me what the hell I can do to wipe all GC data on my laptop so I can start from scratch?More problems but still living....0 -

Which version are you using? I think on Windows 7 your files are stored in something along the lines of: C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/GoldenCheetah/cyclistname

I was hoping you'd reply Mark
I've just installed the latest Development version. The folder C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/GoldenCheetah/ is empty - if I create a new cyclist and click help the location is apparently C:/Program Files/GoldenCheetah/Library/GoldenCheetah/. But then the location/folder doesn't exist there and nothing is created in C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/GoldenCheetah/ . I've messed something up, but since an uninstall doesn't sort it out I'm stuck.More problems but still living....0 -

Just checked the code, always helps
If the 'old' library path exists (/Library/GoldenCheetah/ under the install directory) it will use that. If that directory doesn't exist then it will look in the OS preferred data directory which on Win7 is the name I mentioned before (but slightly different for WinXP et al). Might be worth renaming/deleting the Library directory ... do make sure it is empty first tho!!!
