Was it just me or did anyone else get blown to an almost standstill in the Millbank WT last night?

Yep. Nearly went over the front of my bike as I hit that wall of wind.

It was brutal in Richmond Park too, travelling going from Roehampton Gate to Robin Hood Gate. So I went up the hill and came back to Roehampton Gate and did an extra stretch on my way home

(Actually, it was a very silly idea. Legs were in shreds. Going up that hill twice in 53x19 with a rucsac is not fun. It just means that I can eat with impunity when I get home.)

So i tried the game. My journey home was dominated by an intense paranoia and i spent a lot of time looking behind me for bogies creeping up on my tail. I did manage to put my smack down on a lyrca clad roadie on Vauxhall bridge, only to discover 'he' was a 'she'. Are women lower on the food chain by virtue of being girls - or is that sexist?

I attempted to pass a 7 foot lyrca Ribble today and got humiliated with him laughing in my face and then being passed by a smug looking mountain bike as I crawled along panting in exhaustion and self-loathing.

Its tough out there but i feel like Rocky at the bottom of the steps.

Luckily I avoided Millbank, as that's not my route home...

However, I did get some very exciting side winds before the Acton railway bridge last night, felt like being hit by an invisible train made of cotton wool... Perturbing!

Had to take the stupid choob this morning... stupid hateful thing... grrrr... :x

Good attitude Sewinman... keep it up you'll be faster, what are you riding?

As for me. Oh my there was some good scalping this morning

After a pathetic ride home last night post gym and into a mother of a headwind which frankly damn near crippled me, this morning I was feeling good.

There wasn’t a sniff until a roadie nipped past me on the way into greenwich…feck, I caught him up but then as I thought he might zipped through a red light scalp saved but on a technicality… hmm I caught him up at the tunnel (after he had ridden on the pavement to avoid the temporary one way system while I walked I might add) We head out of the tunnel and there are 3 roadies ahead of me all fcn 2-4 I ramp it up and bin the guy who did me and then the other two I kept up the nonchalant ;) speed until I get to the road works where 5 people on bikes (they’re not cyclists) choose not to wait at the traffic lights but ride along the pavement around the blockage while I waited patently with anger building as they head off into the distance. The lights change and I’m off like a flash realing in two of them far too easily I’m gaining on the others and after a little while I pass the first guy again making me feel much better about the world regardless of technicalities… I have the high moral ground and a bag full of bloody scalps… awesome

I also managed to take a courier on the A3 as well and stay ahead of him in traffic, so that’s also rather pleasing.

Excellent. The constatnt looking over the shoulder is perfectly normal behaviour.

And women are fair game. Give them no quarter. There are some very nippy ones out there.

Clever Pun - I am riding a Fast Hybrid with baggies. My FCN is 9 or 10 according to calculator...the difference stems from me not being entirely sure what the peddle categories mean. I just have normal peddles which i think maybe the flats.

I am struggling a bit to think of my Marin Kentfield as a 'fast' hybrid, compared to say a Genesis but you pays your money etc...

That always used to be my goal on the cruiser bike, but now the ones out my way are a bit of an easy target... especially as I feel sorry for them having been cycling all day... well, jealous, but I can see that they'd be tired...

I fully support this suggestion... I'm making a quilt out of scalps, you see...

Just a slight refinement of CJ's statement - some women are fair game. L-i-T is obviously one of them (I have no idea about gear inches and what not, but even I have understood that the boys on here are seriously impressed with her). I, however, am not fair game. My scalp never ever counts. OTOH, I've decided that anyone on a bike is fair game for me.

  • Loads of people on the bikes today? mostly young ladies with brand new 'be safe be seen gear'. Are they all teachers going back to school? weird. All going the other way though, and lower down the food chain so not much use after alls said and done.

Slightly off topic this, but I've started playing mario cart reciently: on the way to work I caught myself bunnyhopping into a fast left hander so as not to wipe out my speed! Bad Bad habit. Must try not to confuse any kind of GAME with real life...

I got a genuine scalp this morning! A shaved fixie on a tarty white number with SPD-SLs (this wasn't any of you, was it? You're a decent rider but you RLJ too much, stop that).

He appears on Kings Road and I'm sizing him up but feeling there aren't enough decent traffic light-free stretches to really have a go - he's riding quite a high gearing and could probably make 30mph without too much trouble. But then I think sod it and about half a mile from Sloane Square I make my move, powering past himm, relaxed as you like, not looking round, not looking round... Sloane Square appears, I start to slow down, glance, and can't even see him - he's back there (as I discover 10 seconds later as he RLJs past me) but I have pwned him good and proper.

I catch him again but don't have a chance to re-pwn until The Mall - just as I am deciding to, um, extend my commute by not turning left at St James' Palace as usual, the dude starts flailing around and can't get his foot in the pedal. I look on with pity, decide once is enough, and turn off. In my exuberance I attack St James' Street (the hill up to Piccadilly) and don't fall below 22mph until I have to turn. Sweet.

I flew into work yesterday, but coming home was a grind. I was crawling up a mild incline when out of nowhere this bloke nonchalantly breezed past my with a cheery wave. Quick check of the FCN shows we were equal, he was on SS/fixed, didn't have SPD pedals but was wearing one of them little caps (lucky I didn't have mine on or he would've been lower than me). I can only assume he lived at the top of the hill and just came straight out of his house a rode off whilst I was almost at the end of my journey. I kept up with him after he'd passed me (not drafting of course) but he turned off before I had a chance to retake him. Equal FCN so no points lost, just injured pride.

I've refrained from using this particular interweb term but it's valid in terms of scalping

It's not just a game thing it's from owned shortened down then retards who can spell took it on.. a little the 'teh' I think

Sewinman, you're on flats get yourself some clip pedals and shoes and you'll up your speed... go on... do it

(psst, Litt, I think Corrie rides a FCN in three figures, not sure the scalping would count)

Oi, it's Cori to you, m'dear (otherwise everyone will be confusing me with some back-to-back jerry built houses up north). And you worked FCN out to be an 8. (Which I have unilaterally downgraded to double figures, aksherly, on the grounds I'm rubbish.)

    "your all gay" (SIC)
    "Impressive break"

    "Thanks...

    ...I can taste blood"
  • OMFG, looks like I'll need to drag out the 1337 dictionary (or at least have urban dictionary open in another tab.....) to start deciphering the speak! Mind u i can do a fairly good job without them, as long as we don't resort to
"OMFG LOLZ, I pwnd u!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111" we should be ok :-)

Whilst I remember Litt is that your new bike in your profile picture? I think it would make a fantasic scalping machine, imagine cheerily waving at a shaved roadie from 7ft up in the air as you glide past

  • Blimey o'reilly!

I look away for one minute and suddenly the thread has turned into a page of binary!

And a veto on l33t-speak from me please - although I do find the verb 'to pwn' (I pwn, you pwn, he/she pwns, they pwn) quite amusing!

And Coriander, litts is just jealous because you and I can shave our legs and nobody asks questions...
