I rode my MTB up and down the small drive then back into the garage and continued to fettle and clean, white bar tape now less brown more yellow/white. :)

Then made a snow man and watched the neighbourhood children make an igloo, which took them hours to make a mins to destroy, i'm not sure that children so young should use such a big saw and how do they know how to do that???

I am riding my Spesh Singlecross on fixed gear but with nobblies i.e. cx tyres. I carry a rucsac and 50% of the time I ride in baggies. What FCN am I?

I presumed I just sit in the fakenger class and use the standard adjustments?

Well, after a lot of beers on Friday I left the bike at work. Yesterday I didn't even leave the house apart from to make a snowman with my daughter so today was the first day back on public transport for a while. What a mistake. The normally 45 minute tube journey took 2 hours 10 mins, of which 35 mins was spent waiting for some idiot in London Underground to announce that there were no district line trains going through Earls Court  So, late, hot and bothered at work.

Not wanting to repeat that I vowed to ride home. My office thought I was nuts and I half agreed with them. It wasn't too bad, though I stuck to the major roads and only had a few hairy moments on the slush. 3/4 mile and 6 minutes longer than normal. No scalps and no scalpees either as it was dead out there!

  • Took the MTB in today and it only doubled my commute time (approx 20-25 minutes) and had a right ball!

The roads near my house where the worst as it was 2 tracks of compacted ice and still powder down the middle. I thought I'd get more traction on the powder but found that had ice underneath to and my chunky wheels just sorta ploughed it up and got stuck before sliding!
I stuck to a lowish gear and speed on the compacted ice and got by with only a few dabs of the foot!

Main roads where clearer with just a serious covering of black slushy cr4p. Took the primary for most of the road and held up a few drivers, most passed sensibly so not much to complain about!

Ride home tho was a lot wetter as the roads had a day of thawing and traffic on them to melt the slush! Back there tomorrow so guess it should be even easier and once the ice disappears from the road I can get back on my "proper" bike!

I've been "resting" this week but I'm due to get back on the bike tomorrow. The weather has been alright here so far, but tomorrow's forecast is for fog then heavy snow come the rush hour. I think I'll put the knobblies on the work bike tonight and dig out the heavy winter clothes.
Today is a good day to ride
  • Ride in was a bit better today, roads a lot less slushy but it also seems to have brought out the lower-IQ drivers.

It started off when I left the house with the 2 biggest in tow to take them to school on the way to work, I can hear a car slowly coming down the road on the compacted ice and look round to see what car it is. It's a newish Fiesta with a young guy driving it...........whilst trying to text!!!!!!

Having safely left the kids at school and setting off I then find what appears to be a snow pyramid coming the other way. Some stupid cow seems to think the best thing to do in this weather was to pile up a 4 ft pyramid of snow on top of her Astra! Hopefully the weight will crush her roof before she causes a serious accident!

been commuting on my Fury and seen no-one to scalp!!! I could be amassing scalps left, right and centre but not a jot... grrr

oh yeah, if anyone is thinking of buying from Halfords, beware of the bike staff at Manchester Fort, they did a poor job of setting up my bike...

  • First time cycling this week...was itching to get out as I had cabin fever from spending two days working from home. Walked my (now snowless) bike to the main road as my road was just plain hazardous!

A24/A3 from Tooting Broadway to Stockwell was well cleared and ice free but you still had to watch out by the kerb and around the centre lines.

However did have a lucky escape between Stockwell and Vauxhall, the bus lane was looking a little dicey but ok...for some reason my ice radar malfunctioned and suddenly I realised I was on a pretty bad patch which covered the whole of the bus lane....this co-incided with a car deciding to turn left pretty late...I had one of those slo-mo moments with the hint of the invitable, braked, back wheel went right, managed to somehow dismount while still standing up and ended up skating in a straight line for about another 5 metres in a Todd Carty (Dancing on Ice) fashion but still managed to stay on my feet.

Managed to walk back to bike which was fine apart from my seatpost being slightly askew and set off again (on the main lane) with a modicum of pride still intact.

Very few people out to today did have a little jousting with a Rapha wearing, Condor riding chap off VB bridge but our paths parted before any real games could begin...

Normal service has (just about) resumed in Liverpool. The roads were free of snow and ice last night and in fact mostly dry. The pavements were still covered in ice though as I found out last night walking to Tesco. So why do some cyclists still choose to ride on the pavement? Idiots.

So far so good, I enjoyed this mornings commute so much I was making engine noises..

2 scalps, but they were mtbs on nobblies- nothing worthwhile to report.

Hate to be pedant but as your FCN is 4, these weren't scalps only passes (that is unless these two guys both had an incredible set of modifiers!)

I'm sure someone suggested that the FCN should be reversed in these adverse conditions as MTB's are the best tool for the job at present!

Riding mine the last few days has really made me appreciate the speed of my roadie tho, the gearing is just pitiful and I seem to be spinning away for very little forward progression!! Then when I do stop pedalling I lose speed at a stupid rate!! I don't actually think I'm gonna be back on the roadie until next Wednesday now as I have some training up norf Monday and Tuesday so won't have the bike with me!

That might be partly because it's so cold - your muscles and tendons will be tighter.

Wasn't it the cold that caused it in the first place?

Tedious, but better safe than sorry.

True true... Although I thought that it might be the cold, my theory was dismissed by the medics, but after a physio session I do feel like someone has replaced my shoe with a lead boot, and I can only walk a few hundred yards at a time.

So maybe it is better to wait.

    Grumble grumble.

Errrr, if he changed his mind, surely he wasn't lying the first time. 8)

Or are you caught up in a maelstrom of rage and turmoil such that these fine distinctions are beneath you? :D:D:D

Believe me, you're not missing much out there. I rode in this morning. Well, I did after I walked to the end of my icey road in uber-slippy bike shoes. That was fun. Then I had to scan the road like a demon for the smooth black bits which are, in fact, compacted smoothed slush (=ice=fall=hurt). Niiiiiiceeee

    The rage bit.

I think he's worried about ice+fall= put down bad foot for balance and cause further injury. Bah. Rubbish. I always put my left foot down anyway. :x

I may well know the bit you mean as I also go that way, it was horrible on the bus lane this morning, like you I noticed too late and kind of made a 'whooaaa' sound while the tyres shimmied around but stayed upright, just.

Then I made the utterly stoopid mistake of going my usual route through Hyde Park which had been turned into an ice rink. Cue much walking with only the bike holding me up...

Vaguely regretting my decision now as ice is going to be even harder to spot in the dark...
