I'm sure that my calorie intake was much less than my expenditure - around 6000 cals according to an online calculator

No change on the weight front but certainly fitter ;-)

At last I'm on a downward path again. 16 stone 9 now. For some reason last week the weight just fell off without really trying -- it's as if my body has worked out that it really does have to feed off its own fat rather than be fed. I think it's something to do with the amount of riding I've done -- only three hours each weekend plus the usual couple of half-hour commutes, but it seems to have depressed my heart rate and raised my core metabolic rate quite a lot. I now need to decide whether to go out this afternoon and get wet or stay at home! Perhaps I'll get wet in the garden shovelling compost rather than on the roads.

yours truly has shed a further 5 lbs so from the beginning i weighed in at 20 st 10 lbs, now down to 19st 11lbs !!! so at last i am on a downward spiral[^] was hoping to go out today, but i am made of sugar[:D] and it was raining !!!!! so went to work instead !!!! but by the next weigh-in,in 2 weeks time i want to get upto 25 miles from my record of 21 miles heres hoping !

now starting to really watch what i eat, only had 1 kitkat/chocolate bar the whole week(today),now eating much more fruit and now forcing myself to eat breakfast when i wake up and going for the healthier cereals etc and not what i used to have i.e bacon and sausage baguette/pain au chocolate.

and also like srw647 says, my body also feels like its feeding itself off the fat ,rather then me feeding it

in general i am feeling much better in myself then previously

from tomorrow onwards i wont be starting work till 2pm each day so i wont have any excuses to get out there, especially now that i went and brught a pair of overshoes today.......

i'd rather have a bottle in front of me,than a frontal lobotomy

Another disappointing weigh-in for Hippo so whatever I have been doing is not working - time for a re-think! The Tacx is great for muscle build-up but as for weight-loss.... I took the crazy hippo road bike off the Tacx yesterday, put new 700x25 tyres on it and replaced the bar tape - that's one job I hate - replacing bar tape; I don't know why but I don't like that job, any of you have similar quirks?
I am normally awake about 4:30, it is light here at about 5:45 and the temperature is not too hot - about 75F! The main problem is the traffic build-up Monday to Saturday, it starts about 6:30. I live about a mile from the main road and there are two side raods that can take me there: one road becomes one way about 6 o'clock and is police controlled at the junction with cars on both sides backing up for about half a mile. The other road is controlled by traffic lights and the same type of tail-back so I have to leave before 6 on a weekday - and you Londoners think that you have traffic problems.
This morning - up at my normal time, route chosen, showered and a cup of tea and then....., to put it delicately, a massive gas explosion. By the time that sorted itself out, it was past 6:30 and my 'window' closed! Better luck tomorrow!

Oh Bog!,

I'm at the bottom of the list :-(

Obviously just polishing my Planet X hasn't worked, going to have to try riding it ;-).

• Don't think it's going to as easy to lose the second stone as the first was,(the first was not that easy) what with the s***e weather and my body metabolism seemingly slowing down, it's going to be one rather hard slog. So it's head down and lock the fridge....well done everybody

how is the planet x for comfort?
i seriously considered buying one but changed my mind and went to the lbs instead. i was concerned about frame strength and flex and wanted some comeback.
i'm a stone heavier than you and bought a roubaix cause its supposed to be more relaxed but its still carbon and the actual ride is so smooth compared to my aluminium framed bike. the power transfer is much better and the bike more responsive too.

Hi sloxam, sorry for the tardy reply, I'd like to say it's because I've been spending all my time on the Planet X, but it's because I've not checked in on Training for a couple of days :-).

The Planet X was a revelation to me coming from a hybridised MTB. So much more comfortable than the MTB (oversize alu tubing and slicks) and it just shoots up hills. Lightness of Planet X took a bit of getting used to (nearly fell off the first time I got out of saddle) as did the riding position but well worth it. I was a bit worried about its strength before I bought it but when I asked Planet X they said they sell to the USA market so there is no problem with weight!

I'm no expert and it is my first road bike, but I honestly can't imagine a better ride for someone of my standard.

I left it a little late before setting off this morning - temperature was in the low 80's and it was just 8 o'clock! I was looking at the maps trying to find the best way from home, past the old airport and onto the road to Ayuthaya. Cross over two main roads and turn right onto a minor road - no problem! Beware of people saying "No problem!" because there usually is! First main road - right turn only, cannot go straight ahead. So I turn right, I can cut across to the second main road about 2 miles up. Got to the second main road - there's a flyover and no cycles allowed. OK, Ill just get to the junction and go straight over at the lights but there's a big concrete central divide that goes on for miles & miles so it will have to be a left turn back towards the city.
So instead of doing about a 50 mile run, I ended up back home after about 20 miles but I enjoyed it and that's the name of the game! I am hoping to have a run out next Sunday with the Thailand Cycling Club
Had a very pleasant surprise when I got home - weighed myself and the scale stopped at exactly 300lbs!

Well done!

I did my first 200km Audax of the year on Sunday starting at the Humber Bridge going to Malton via Flamborough Head and returning through the Yorkshire Wolds. The organiser described the route as undulating and I thought that he'd overstated the lumpiness untill I reached the hill at Leavening, 160km into the ride. A twinge at the back of my left knee convinced me that pushing the bike up the hill was a better proposition than winching myself up. It was the first time that I'd got off to push in two years. I rolled into the finish exactly 13 hours and 134 miles after starting. I was the last one back but still had an hour in hand.

I got through six litres of fluids, a fry up for breakfast, four bananas, a cornish pasty, two cereal bars, two chicken salad sandwiches, a bag of crisps and two pieces of flap jack plus the remainder of a chinese takeaway when I got back home. I'm sure that despite the amount of food consumed, I was still in calorie deficit.

Haven't weighed myself. Still feeling tired....

I use a Brooks B17. My bike is a Reynolds 531ST steel framed Dawes Galaxy or rather one of my five bikes is a Dawes Galaxy. I also use a steel framed Brooks saddled Raleigh R100 road bike which is lighter but not as low geared as the Galaxy.

I'm a cheapskate so carbon will never figure in my fleet of bikes my Trek 4500 cost as nearly as much as the other four bikes put together.

The Brooks saddles have been comfortable from day one. Both now have dimples where my sit bones have made imprints. The third Brooks saddle has yet to be used on my Baines Flying Gate replica.

It hasn't been thatbad. Every day has been rideable in Leeds though I confess to having only ridden last Saturday and Wednesday and on the really rough day, I failed to unearthmy mountain bike.

I know the weather has been bad else where but no voices of protest have been heard [:o)]

I'll be going out on Sunday to do this route:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/20 ... RLEY-LEEDS

Last Sunday I rode this route:

Last Wednesday I rode this route:

Next weekend I'll be doing this route:

I can't believe how benign the weather has been this year and I manged to get in quite a few km. My decreasing weight, however, is a seperate issue. I must eat fewer pies......

After Sunday's ride - mentioned on another topic - I rested on Monday and was going to start a new regime on Tuesday. Tuesday and Wednesday we had horrendous thunderstorms first thing so that was those two taken care of. Went to Tesco on Wednesday afternoon, had a coffee at a nice coffee shop and Mrs Hippo popped next door to Boots and came out with some stop smoking literature. So I am now on a course of anti smoking-tablets, there was a warning about driving so I thought I'd better not cycle until I find out if they affected me - they don't. I take one tablet a day for 3 days and I can still smoke, days four to seven - two tablets and smoke, eighth day onwards, two tablets and no smoking! Will I eventually stop? Well, I can be a bit of a fubborn stucker so yes! I'll keep you informed.

I found that the nicotine gume/tablets gave me a bigger hit than the cigarettes themselves and at the time I had visions of having to resume smoking to kick the tablets into touch.

A full blown dose of flu stopped me smoking - the withdrawal symptoms were masked by the misery of the flu symptoms.

Not had a cigarette for the past five or so years. The nicotine rush after smoking a 1/4 cig just after recovering from flu was a thoroughly unpleasant experience and convinced me that I'd be better off without cigarettes.

Good luck on your quest to stop. Several years on from quitting you'll wonder why you bothered in the first place.

Not been a good couple of weeks for me. I did my back in (old injury) and have been unable to ride. Not ideal as I put back on a nearly 6lbs. Also not helped with training for my first Audax next weekend.

I got back on the bike today and the back seems to be holding up so I will go ahead with the Audax as planned.

By making riding your bike a habit/ritual, you just might find some motivation to embed and extend your cycling activities.

I get out every weekend and have only missed two weekends this year - once when I was unwell and once when there were gale force winds.

On the day that I ride I dress in my cycling kit as soon as I get out of bed which moves me one step closer to getting the bike out of the garage. The night before riding I get the kit out and leave it downstairs so that I don't have to spoil my wife's lie in asking her about the whereabouts of missing items.

When I first returned to cycling I used to use several different loops and compare times as I got fitter. I also used to cycle two or three evenings per week as well as at the weekend.

I'm quite happy to do just a 100km or 200km Audax at the weekend now as I have been too busy/tired to do an evening ride. Now that coursework marking is over I just might return to doing a couple of shortish loops through the week.

Hope that helps.
