Planet X Spitfire Ti

This frameset is on sale for £600 at the moment. I have a surfeit of carbon bikes and no Ti so I was thinking of swapping the groupset and kit from my old Scott CR1 on to one of these and selling the Scott frameset. Are these Spitfires any good, as £600 for Ti seems a bargain?

Haven't ridden one but have built one up with SRAM Red and its a very, very nice frame to work on and is v nicely made.

A few people on here gave them and, tbh, haven't read a bad report.

Cheers Matt. Think I'll go for it. Just need to decide on M or L now as either would work. M will probably need a bunch of spacers and L might be a stretch on a 100 mm stem ...

Since you already have a few bikes, it might be better to look at getting a custom designed Ti frame, since I doubt a £600 Ti frame will give you anything you don’t have already. I saw a review of Waltly Ti Technology in China recently, which was selling custom Ti frames for less than good western carbon frames.

The Planet X Ti frames are made by Walty AFAIK so they're probably quite decent.

My thinking is I can replace an old carbon frame that I now never use with something that I might ride from time to time without spending a whole lot of money. I have Red eTap and nice Zipp kit to swap over and I've got loads of wheels that I can use. If it turns out I don't like it, then I think am more likely to get a fair price for a newish Ti bike with eTap than an ancient Scott CR1 if selling the complete bike.

but but but THE LOGO ON THE FRAME

They used to be made by Van Nich when they first came out - same material, same factory, same welder, 1/2 the price

    All that glitters....

B: that is a mega plan Do it do it do it do it do it now.

I think the forks are extra, which adds a couple of hundred to the cost.

No, Selcof fork is included but headset is £60 on top.

Hmm, interesting. They come up cheaper than that for me in Aus, but shipping cost.. (and I already have a Ti/Carbon roadie I never ride).

I used to have a Waltly titanium MTB frame, a 29er hard tail from about 2014 or so, and it was beautifully made and finished, very impressive.

V v top work that man - one of the MFs could be tempted at that price.

Are they sloping top tubes or flat?

Sloping, but not too severe by the looks of it. Planet X got them designed by renowned titanium frame builder Mark Reilly, who sadly died last year aged only 53.

This one might be to your taste!

Frame arrived with all the bits, but it's too small for me and will be going back. The seat tube is pretty short so my seat post doesn't get past the minimum insertion line for the height I run. The L might do, but its effective top tube seems too much at 57 cm. No metal Planet-X head tube badge was also a disappointment, but the frame looks really smart and well finished. Not sure if I'll just return the lot or swap for an L ...

Swap then return if not suitable.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Can you not just source a longer seatpost, or is it proprietary?

As you say (Presuming you know what kind of length TT you get on with) if you went for a large, you'd then have to probably go for something like an 80mm stem - not the end of the world though, and will mean less drop from saddle to bars if that is importance.

It's a 31.6 / 350 mm Zipp SL Speed carbon seat post, and I don't want to spend money on different one. Besides it will look silly with so much post showing. PX recommend the L for someone my height, so I might just get away with the 100 mm stem I have.

Anyway, I thought I'd ordered the L at lunchtime yesterday, but I didn't get a confirmation email from PX although there is a pending payment on my card. I called them to check and they can't find the order so I would need to reorder with another £500 odd off my card.

It now seems this bike is not meant to be, so I am just going to return it and all the bits for a full refund. I was out on the Scott this morning and was surprised at how good it felt, so I'm not sure the Spitfire will be an improvement, especially as it's giving away at least 600g in weight.

Mug that schizzle off and best buy a Bosberg then.

Sell all the other plastic bikes to make space for it.

What is your inside leg and height for the frame to be too small in medium?

I’m about 5’10 with 34” inseam and run my saddle at around 78cm. The M seat tube is only 50 cm long, but I need at least 52 to accommodate the 350 mm post. Anyway, PX must have found my order because the L frame has just arrived. The concern with this is the 57 cm top tube is a bit longer than my usual 54-56.

Slightly shorter stem should work out all ok tbh - I'm normally a 57, had to go 58 on the S3 and dropped from a 110mm to a 100mm stem - all feels and works perfect, no downsides at all..

Blimey, someone with virtually identical measurements to me.

I have found 54cm frames with a 545ish top tube, and a 100/110 stem tend to be the sweetspot for me.

55 cm effective top tube seems to be my sweet spot, which is why I initially picked the M; however, I've now done a 50 mile ride on the L and I am really happy with the fit. I can tell it's a fraction longer than my other bikes, but I don't feel stretched at all. I have to say, the ride quality was fantastic: silky smooth, fast, reactive and responded well to out the saddle efforts on short climbs. Definitely a keeper so my Scott frame will be going up for sale in the next day or two.

Here are a couple of photos. Wheels are Kinlin XR-31s with CX-Rays that I built for the Fred Whitton as I wasn't keen on using carbon rims on the crazy descents there. Tyres are 30 mm Pirelli PZeros so clearance is excellent. I'll probably ditch the cheap PX bottle cages for something nicer in black, but these were £2.50 a pop so just flung them in the basket.
