As an aside, can anyone else forsee pesky Wales being pesky tonight?

At least you didn't fall into the pundit / journalist trap of calling us "plucky underdogs"

Pesky I can take, thanks for that.

Depends which team Italy pick. Could see it being a draw.

Maybe im missing something in the rules what does it being “accidental” have to do with anything?

Accidentally tripping someone is a foul.

No you are right - officially intent shouldn't enter into the decision.

Unofficially of course we can point to lots of incidences where refs do judge intent and where it's an accident, not excessively dangerous or affecting the game I'd rather refs let it go - but I was surprised in 2021 it wasn't given.

It doesn't if it is foul play. But by the same token where it happens on the pitch shouldn't matter either.

The laws of the game allow for the ref to exercise discretion against calling a foul if they judge there to be accidental collisions where both players are legitimately going for the ball and neither player can pull out, and neither player was reckless. Usually you see this with a clash of heads. Inevitably the ball will hit one or other player first, but often its not a foul. By your reasoning, why not?

My point is that only with VAR can a one or two frame (i.e. 0.02-0.04) second time difference really be seen, it is only used for goal scoring situations, therefore a different rule or a different standard is being applied.

There is an argument that VAR should only be used in real-time and that the pillocks who sit in a media centre somewhere and judge that running around with your arms tied to your side is "natural" etc. should have a fixed period within which to decide. 15 seconds maybe. If they can't decide in that time, its not clear and obvious is it?

What they do instead is think, ooh, this could be a penalty, we'd better be really diligent about this... whereupon they stare at it so long they end up making a poor decision.

tbh, we all know Wales is my second team and tbh I love the way they are - they come across as a really tight knit bunch of guys without egos going out, having fun and getting results and having a massive laugh at the same time.

the complete mirror image of the arrogant underperforming english team.

hopefully bale, rambo, etc will have a cracking game, we'll win and keep a clean sheet, Wales will qualify and MARMALISE AND SMASH AND DESTROY engerland in the next couple of rounds

Jeez, that dive from the Italian player. It's lucky we have VAR now to stop these cheats.

Best possible outcome for the MFs? Italy first, Wales second, both qualified.

Just watching the highlights of the Italy's v Wales game? How is that a red card? That kind a challenge happens at least once a match and is a yellow at most.

    Sorry if debated earlier.

I thought it was a borderline red - probably slightly harsh but I've certainly seem them given in the England.

There was a worse challenge earlier in the game that was only a yellow.

    Which one?

I saw the Dan James one - he didn't get booked though - I'm assuming the ref didnt see it properly.

I just thought with Ampadu it didn't look like a natural attempt to win the ball. Ok he's not put that much force into it which is why I'd have said a yellow was probably fair but he's head on studs high and late.

In their live coverage, the rules pundit clarified the instructions given to referees pre tournament and why it was a red card. Seeing as this info was pre-determined, there is no excuse, it's a clear red.

It seems a tough interpretation but it is either a mistake on the players part or a lack of coaching to blame.

Understanding how the rules will be applied is the job of the coaches.

I reffed ice hockey for a number of years and understanding the rules and also how they will be interpreted can gain a team a huge advantage and avoid costly mistakes.
