26 to go and I've just had a sec to catch up

3 man break with 1 min, Lutsenko in the middle after a badly timed mechanical.

Fast and furious behind but otherwise the peloton is all together (? Save the people BS mentioned above)

    20 to go.

Break shatters leaving Kenny Ellisonde at 30s

Sprinters all out the back. LJ swarm the front. (The Green jersey has disappeared from the graphic so I assume he's been dropped too, but wasn't shown on screen)

    Nope! He's there!

Great ride from SammyB! Only the climbing sprinters left otherwise

Little Ellisonde has been joined by Big Jonas Rutsch. They still have 20s

Chaos disorganized behind but still moving fast

Rutsch making a mockery of the position bans...

    3 to go

Rutsch attacks over the penultimate climb and keeps a few seconds in front.

Gilbert doesn't fancy it. Sammy B still there. QS working something out...?

    1.5 to go

Rutsch - a big guy - grovelling but staying ahead.

    Caught at the Flamme Rouge

Strung out but SB, Bling, Rog still around the front.

Awwww, Sam gives everything to 500m to go then implodes

Cofidis gives Roglic a perfect lead out and he holds off all the remaining climbing sprinters

Finish was harder than it looked on the profile, but an exceptional performance from Primoz who was on his own.

10 more bonus seconds for Rog

(Sam takes 2 whole extra minutes to cover the last 500m 😁. Disappointed but actually that was a stunning ride by him.)

Sam Bennett blowing up then reminded me of Kwiatkowski peeling off the front during a mountain stage a couple of years ago and just shutting down totally. Virtually a trackstand.

Was waiting for Laporte and Matthews to power past Roglic there but the guy is just pure class.

He was soft peddling the last 20 metres.

Even amongst all the talent currently out there Roglic has to be the best all-round rider. It would be interesting to see how he could do at P-R or RVV, probably just lacking the firepower of MvdP or WVA in a flatter sprint but I feel he could hold is own in pretty much any race out there.

    It's a terrible pun.

Mama Lauda = Mach ma' lauta = Mach mal lauter
Mach mal lauter means turn up the volume in colloquial German.

Yeah...it's always better not to know...

(Although that's one of the "cleverer" ones I've heard)

Who is Johnny Derp then? ;)

I think that one is down to tapping the beat from those ballroom dancing classes most Germans do when they are 13-14.
They have the steps they need to follow counting out 1-2-3-tap
In a German accent "1-2-3-tap" becomes "Eins-Zwei-Drei-Tepp" which then rhymes with Depp from Johnny Depp. At least that's the best theory I could ever come up with.

Without wanting to attribute too much musical theory to Oompah-pop, I'm not sure that works musically either ;)

There isn't a correlation between beats from the classes back in the day to these songs, but the people have learned that nomenclature and it somehow got morphed.

It kind of goes like, "Tepp, Tepp, Tepp, Johnny Depp, Depp, Johnny Johnny Tepp Tepp Tepp, Johnny Depp Depp Johnny Johnny... does it not? 😉🤪

I've had to do some stag night trips to Mallorca with ze Germans, so I'm both horrified/traumatized as well as somewhat well versed. 😛

    That's the one.

I'd say it's 18/16 so compound triple time.

I'm not sure I'd count that in 4 in a dance class :pensive:

I think it's more likely that it just started as bup bup bup buh-buh bup bup...etc

Which became dup which became Johnny Depp.

The video for Niki Lauda now makes way more sense. Part of the problem was that I was hearing "Wir hast die mutter..." rather than "Wie Heisst die mutter..." (spelling?) so I was thinking she'd been kidnapped for some reason. Or that she and the song were linked to a town/sports club or something a la die Eisbaren

Re the Lorenz Büffel song 'Johnny Däpp' (as it is called and spelt; Däpp is pronounced more or less the same as Depp):
After singing about how he wants to get back to Malle (Malle is the name most Germans use for Mallorca/Majorca), stuff his job, spend all his money there, ride the waves, party, and have fun, Büffel sings
Ich will Malle zurück, ich will Malle zurück,
Ich will Malle, Malle, Malle, Malle, Malle, Malle, Mamamamamama,
    Johnny Däpp,
Däpp Däpp Däpp Johnny Däpp Däpp,
Johnny Johnny Däpp Däpp Däpp Johnny Däpp Däpp

    So why the lyric Däpp?
Maybe because in the first Pirates film, Sparrow (the Johnny Depp character) was stranded on an island, which is clearly what the singer would like to happen to him on Malle.
Maybe because in a subsequent Pirates film Sparrow is searching for the Fountain of Youth, which is what Malle in some ways represents to many Germans.
Maybe because Depp means dimwit or dope in German, so there is a degree of self-depreciation.

The dimwit idea is carried on in a sequence in the official video for the song.
There is a slight pause in the volume, so the music is in the audio background, and three types sitting at a table in the Malle sunshine talk about the song, the conversation going something like this:
Bloke says „Man, I get so worked up by it, that crappy song from Lorenz Büffel, depp, depp, depp, the guy is useless
His companion replies “Just cool it, it's always sick music in Malle, I've never heard of a comical Büffel guy, so just close your head to at all“.
The woman at the table then says „But honestly, get a look at that sexy ass“.
Just at that moment Büffel is walking by (wearing his horned headdress – Büffel means buffalo in German) and the three at the table hypocritically shout over in friendly manner 'Hey Büffel', giving him the thumbs up and even shouting 'Cool song, mega, what a number!', one of them then briefly singing 'depp, depp, depp'. Appearing pleased yet surprised, and as if a bit of a simpleton, Büffel naively replies „Really?
The music then comes back to the audio foreground and the scene changes to the stage performance.

Anyhow, Cattaneo & S. Bennett, Teuns & Mäder, Powless, Bernard & Elissonde, de la Cruz, de Plus & Amador, Lutsenko and Perez compose the break of the day.

    Stage 7

Have to admit, the neutering of this race for "not COVID" reasons have rather dampened my spirits for it...The rugby looks tempting today

    But anyway

The race is already underway so I won't go into favourites as they're already out of date. Can anyone see past Roglic tho?

We stay in Alpes Maritime so food and - lack of wine - stay the same as yesterday

A few riders getting tailed off on a bit of a drag but essentially it's a cavalry charge up the valley until the final climb.

Cracking effort from Sam Bennett to last for so long. However, too many teams chasing down the breakaway. They obviously have more hope that Roglic can be beaten than I do.

Surprised by how poor David Gaudu is at this race.
2 weeks ago against lesser light he was outstanding.
Here he’s just rubbish: dropped over 5kms from the finish and from a sizeable group

Could have got some kind of injury from his involvement with Tao Geoghen Hart’s crash maybe. Trying to be kind to him.

Blythe was suggesting Roglic looks like he’s on an off day, however Jumbo Visma look like they’ve just flicked the switch.
