Excellent ride by Planckaert, is he related to Eddy?

No. But to add confusion, he has a brother called Edward who rides for Alpecin
Yeah, I spotted that and another brother is a pro too I think.

The postponed in February, Ruta Del Sol starts today, with live coverage from 1pm in the usual places.
Unfortunately, while many of the original teams are turning up, many of the original riders selected, are not.
The only GC rider of note is Lopez, who was not going too well, last week in Mallorca.
Pedersen, Kristoff and Trentin are there for the sprints, along with Cav, but it's hard to see why.

Yeah I saw on Cav's instagram, he doesn't seem to be expecting much from it. I assume he is just going for the race miles.

It's also about who's available - lots of riders at the Giro or focussed on Dauphine or Suisse which start in 2 / 3 weeks, then the Tour.

Despite some very poor camerawork, the finish to yesterday's stage at RDS was a good watch, Ethan Hayter storming up a brutal cobbled climb to take the win. Interesting to see if he can hang on to Lopez on today's stage.

Answer being no. Lopez decisively cracking most of the opposition on the Queen stage.

Just caught up on Tro Bro Leon.

I think our intrepid lanterne rouge contender was confused - he didn't know which end of the breakaway group to be on.

Top work by Swifty. Top Franglais too.

Loved the Franglais — nearly as good as mine!

Feels like someone somewhere ought to note Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig's first win at World Tour level - it's always seemed like an anomaly that she hasn't bagged one. I was worried that she'd always be a rider who's more notable for her camera presence than palmares.

Anyway, the winner's interview is her usual self ("We were just like, let's have some fun!") except she's clearly very emotional, and her team bursting in to congratulate her halfway through was a great moment - if not really the accepted protocol it was very much on brand.

Have no fear, the Vikings thread has needed an update

She's been close before but has never quite got there, fantastic to see her finally get the win.

'Interesting' finish to the last stage of RDS:

Anna van der Bergen wins the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas final stage and overall. The fourth and final stage finished on Lagunas de Neila a 11km mountain finish. As expected it came down to a battle between VDB and Annemiek van Vleuten. The break was caught late on the climb leaving the two favourites to battle it out although Vollering rode a high pace for much of the finale to support VDB. Van Vleuten tried to attack in the last few metres but VDB kicked away and looks pretty unbeatable just now. Top two on the stage was top two overall with VDB winning by 3 seconds (time gained on a small split on Stage 3 yesterday).

Hayter must have heard the crash as he looked around immediately he crossed the line.

    Ouch btw.

With the Giro stage and live coverage disappearing into the Dolomite mist, this is on GCN ES Player live in a bit.

Tour of Limberg. Lotto Soudal rider with 10 seconds lead in last km takes the wrong right hander in to someone’s drive.
Tim “ I’m too ill to finish the giro” Meiller wins.

Watched the second half of the initial one-day Mercan'tour Classic yesterday. Its first edition was due to take place last year, but for the obvious reason it was postponed. About 3500 m climbing over 173 km. Good to see a new race introduced; I hope it gains in stature.

Guillaume Martin won fairly comfortably. Other participants/finishers included his team-mate Perez, Mathias Frank (apparently to retire after this season), Jungels, and 50-year old Rebellin!
The large number of DNF included Geshke, Anacona, Geniez, and a Joseph Pidcock (related to Tom?)

A while back, after having done Bonette, I stayed at St. Sauveur-sur-Tinee (which was twice passed during the race) and from St. Sauveur, I then covered what turned out to be the last 60 km of the race. At the time I thought the landscape in the area lovely and seeing it again yesterday made me think I should have been back by now. Even though Valberg looks to have meantime grown by about 50% in size, not for the best.
(The below photo isn't of Valberg but of St. Sauveur)

About time we had some younger riders coming through!

Edit - as with most of the top UK riders of the last 30 years he rode the Junior Tour of Wales (2019) and came 6th just behind Leo Hayter, Ethan's younger brother who is now with the DSM development team. He (Pidcock) was also the leading young rider in that 2019 event so was only a first year junior - he's only just turned 19.

This thread has been quite quiet during the Giro, so I thought I would take the opportunity to point out that there's a decent stage race going on in France at the moment.

The Boucles de la Mayenne has live coverage from L'Equipe and Tiz has been uploading the coverage, which providing you follow their link, is available to watch on YouTube.

Further to jimmyjams heads up about route changes at the Tour de Suisse, the home site gives some details:

As the Nufenen Pass as well as the possible alternative Furka Pass will not be passable, the 6th stage from Fiesch to Disentis-Sedrun on Friday 11 June will not be possible in the planned way. Stage 6 starts in Andermatt, goes over the north side of the Gotthard Pass into Ticino, from there as planned over the Lukmanier Pass to Disentis-Sedrun. The local OC for the final weekend in Andermatt promised its support at short notice, for which the organizers are very grateful.

As already announced, the 8th stage had to be adjusted due to the closed Susten Pass. The queen’s stage now leads from Andermatt over the Oberalp Pass, the Lukmanier into the Leventina and via the south side of the Gotthard Pass back to Andermatt.

Not quite in the 's***' and 'small' category but how did the organisers overlap the starting day of the giro with the first day of the Criterium du Dauphine which also finishes on the same day the Tour de Suisse starts?
Does that mean certain lesser riders have had to potentially miss finishing a GT because of other commitments?
Or, that it has precluded entry into one or the other because of calendar clashes?

The Tour is a week earlier than usual due to the Olympics so the calendar gets compressed a little.

Just a quick mention that live on GCN/Eurosport player tomorrow, we have the Belgian answer to Strade Bianche, with the Dwars door het Hageland.
Well worth a watch if the current Dauphine isn't rocking your boat.

Stybar crashes out of the Belgian road race that closest resembles cyclocross.
