S*** Small Races Thread - 2021

  • Yes and a reminder that the Giro is only 10 days away.
Presumably the other person in question will be on hand to fill the void.

Checking the results and it’s sad to see that Chris Froome only beat 10 riders today. (130th out of 140)

Blimey 130/140 😳 I wasn’t really expecting him to come roaring back but he really hasn’t shown anything this year at all. There doesn’t seem to have been any progression from last year.

He appears to be getting worse race by race.

Doing the Tommy V act of losing time early on so he can get in a breakaway?!

    ..... at clutching straws......

Sad that Romandie is considered a small race too btw. Isn't it the 5th biggest stage race of the year? The Tour of the Basque Country gets its own thread...(I realise I could start one...)

Well we used to have someone who produced spolier threads for most races but was criticised for plagirism at the end of last season so understandably is less inclined to do them now.
It's just a forum isn't it? Not an academic thesis. I enjoyed those threads for what it's worth.

On the race itself, I've heard people suggesting that Froome's main problem is he's heavier than he was, but it's hard to imagine how a medalist in the Worlds/Olympic time trials could be 130th today without a serious drop in power too.

Unless he wasn't trying today. He says he's here for Woods.

(I obviously don't think he's going well either, but maybe 130th is not totally reflective of his form)

How much would a race of that length really take out of you even if you went full gas?

Towards the finish he got out of the saddle, but looked like he was knackered and struggling.

Everyone is hoping he shows something, somewhere, but it’s looking less and less likely.

Not been top 20 in any race since the crash.

He's not going to be a GC contender at the Tour de France, or realistically a stage winner, and I don't know who on that team he could helpfully support. I guess they don't have anyone better to help Martin or Woods for possible stage wins, so he still might end up going.

Nairo Quintana takes the first stage of the Vuelta Asturias.

Normally this race would have live coverage via ETB (Basque Country) but for some reason, not this year.
Not raced last year but the winner of the last two editions was Richard Carapaz.

    Is there any proper opposition?
Unlike everyone else here, I like Nairo and would like to think he might still have it, but I know this is probably clutching at straws.

Will you be spending the Bank Holiday weekend in your dressing gown drinking White Russians? You should, it's great.

I’d imagine that spring road season gives you some pretty decent form.

As for Froome. Would you even take him to the TDF on current form?
Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.

Probably. It might do him some good. It's not as though ISN are overloaded with talent.

Who are the big boys? Just so I've got some idea if I end up vaguely following this...

Do some of them need to go in the "Vikings are coming" thread?

    More the Swiss guard thread...

Nino Schurter and some guy called Mathieu van der Poel were the big pre-'rona duo. I didn't watch much of last year's tho. The girls was usually a better bet for a good race. Some young french riders were on the point of breaking through if I recall correctly

    Current rankings....

I think the only top rider who hasn't raced is that dutch bloke, who is also handy on a CX & road bike.

The re-arranged Volta ao Algarve starts today, with live coverage from GCN/Eurosport at the later than usual time of 4-30pm.

Sprinty stage today, so Sam Bennett is the odds on favourite.
