For those who picked Yates, it was a pretty narrow window in which to be smug.

He did. Quite early on in fact. Jumbo tried to chase him down without much success, then Fulgsang caused the selection behind.

    I thought so

Carapaz would be right in the mix ...his sort of field ....

I like the lack.of riders controlling the climb early on . Rarity .

Thomas finishing more than 11 minutes down on Nibali

He can abandon the Giro and have a slot on the Vuelta team.
I think Froome's is going free.

Pello Bilbao owning the Haimar Zubeldia classification at the Giro once more.
wouldn't they need to get special permission to start another race when the one they abandoned is still taking place?

Who is Harm Vanhoucke Impressive. Only 23 apparently. I must confess that he'd passed me by until now. His best results according to PCS.

    Top results
    Piccolo Giro di Lombardia ('16)
    Flèche Ardennaise ('17)
    3rd Stage Giro d'Italia ('20)
10th GC Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol ('20)

There are so many young riders coming through and I know it gets said a lot then never really happens but there looks to be a real golden period coming up.

I assume so but think they're pretty lenient if the rider has been forced out rather than just decided to change races because it wasn't going their way.

Normally yes, but I think the UCI may have waved the rule for this strange season.

The reason I made the comment was because I recalled this:
Phil Gilbert crashed on stage 1 of the Tour and abandoned, only to turn up and ride both the Tour de Luxembourg and the Gooikse Pijl before the Tour had finished.

Of course this may not apply to another WT race, so I am not sure.

Traditionally, a rider needed permission from the race he left I think. I remember Cavendish dropping out of the Vuelta sick, resting up for a week or so, and then doing the ToB. To do so, he needed consent from the Vuelta (or was it UCI)

  • Another view of Thomas crash. Stray bidon. About 20 seconds in.

  • Unfinished business or not, I don't think G will bother coming back to the Giro again.

Depending on the extent of the injury maybe he'd be good for a shot at Flanders?

Why are riders throwing away bidons in the neutral zone?

So, going downhill at a decent lick. Looked bad and of course it was.
He's very, very unlucky in the crash lottery.

Why are they jettisoning bottles so early anyway? it's asking for someone to do that

Yeah, I've seen someone point out a little bump in the road near the top. A full bidon is going to cause more problems

He's not winning Flanders or P-R with the current crop like WVA, MvdP etc. around.

Not as sick as Thomas I'd wager.

That absolutely sucks. Obviously very nasty. He did well to hang in there as long as he did.

Much heavier fall than I'd expected from the visible damage. Those falls where you don't slide much often feel harder. Someone right at the front looked like they nearly lost it on the rough patch of road.

    It's a horrible one, isn't it.

Given the terrible luck he has it's almost miraculous he won the Tour once.

There were multiple bottles and I never saw anyone throw one.
I'm guessing a lot of bottles bounced out on the bump & GT was very unlucky.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Tao now their best placed rider, 2'30" after Nibali in 24th place. With some freedom/support he could climb up to a top ten without too much bother.

They really aren't kidding when the say the roads round this part of the world are in an absolute state, are they?
