This report is quite interesting for followers of the death olympics. I haven't read it all and I don't know how accurate it is for each country, but it shows that, as expected, Spain and Italy significantly underreported deaths. What's more surprising is so did Germany whose excess deaths are very similar to the UK.

If true, that must come as a massive disappointment to those on here who were looking forward to hanging that gold medal around Boris' neck.

Looking back at the start of this thread and realised Bompington hasn't been around these parts for ages. Hope he's alright and just got bored.

I know everyone has moved on to being Ukraine experts, but I'm intrigued by how little discussion there has been about the paper on excess deaths.

Possibly because it didn't fit in with the narrative on here?
    Naughty!

It's plausible, after all those who spent a lot of energy in the earlier phases of the pandemic shouting about how terribly we were handling it and and how almost any other country was doing it better are hardly likely to welcome a report that shows they were, at least to some extent, talking bollox.

Your narrative that lots of people were saying we were doing terribly at everything covid simply isn't true.
I didn't say how many people - there are a few examples who I'm sure you will recall though. They might have more sofas than the average UK household.
Couple of times in life where I think I missed a trick. Not buying up all the flowers I could get my hands on when Diana died and not having shares in DFS when Corona hit.

Hopefully you had shares in P&G, as they make nappies.

Omicron with and without good vaccine coverage:

    An amazing graph.
CFR is about 5%. Worse than the peak of the UK first wave. This from the 'mild' omicron variant.

Huge lockdowns in progress in China as well. And to think some idiots were talking about it being over.

Can we definitely rule out a new variant?

Just looks like omicron catching up with an unvaccinated elderly population.

Don't know. Possibly they thought their VERY strict entry procedures were enough. It's awful.

I think Hong Kong are also using a lot of Sinovac rather than mRNA vaccines, which probably won't be helping.

Is it worse than AZ? My understanding is that the mrna vaccines give a huge initial response but that it wanes quicker than the more conventional vaccines. In a hand waving sense, and not rest I understand, I had though this was basically because the conventional vaccines give the body larger particles to respond to, so they generate a slightly broader longer term immune response.

Much the same, I think. So Sinovac plus mRNA booster would do the trick, but this https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/hong-kong-vaccine-surge-sees-majority-pick-sinovac-over-biontech says that 61% of people getting their first dose this year in HK were going for Sinovac

For the first time since July 21, there are no 'Covid 19 patients on an ICU ventilator' in NI

    . . . you're all aware that there's a new variant "Deltacron" right? Reported as having a "R"of 10 this morning on the radio . . .

Doesn't matter. BJ says live with it so that's that then.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Ashamed that I questioned his sagacity.

I think I'm right in saying that this variant is causing the problems in HK (Honkers?) and China at the moment

Omicron in China apparently. And Hong Kong.
    Deltacron in Brazil.
