DDRaver - you absolutely can't compare NZ to Switzerland, or anywhere else in Europe. As previously said, it is geographically very isolated. It has a small population. It's external visitor numbers are tiny, probably comparable with Verbier's winter visitors etc, etc.

RJS - that's really good news.

Just stating the facts and putting this into perspective. Which part of my post above do you disagree with?
No you're not, you're giving your opinion based on your take on my post. There are no facts in your post...

Let me ask again, which bit of my post above do you disagree with?
If there are 'no facts' in my post, and my post doesn't in any way disagree with the facts in your post, why would you think I 'disagree' with your post?

It's an odd question which is therefore unanswerable

Which bit of my post do you disagree with?
So you agree with the facts.

I don't understand your point so you'll have to first explain why you think it 'needs a bit of of work'.
    Really?

Yes. Can't reply if you don't explain what you meant as your initialpoi t was pretty vague. Try again.
    No.

    Nope.

The fatal flaw in your argument is thst you assumed I was posting as some sort of antidote to negativity. Not the case, it was simply putting the death rate into perspective. You assumed and you assumed wrong. Assumption is the mother of all **** ups as they say ;)

Also interesting that you interpreted my post as an attempt to put to put positive spin on something and felt obliged to have a pop. That gives us an insight into your mindset.
Is this an attempt to understand the point you couldn't understand?

Not really, just pointing out where you went wrong :)

If it was a joke it was a bit crap. As for a sense of humour, he got rather riled when I put him right on his crap assumptions. Hey ho :)

Now that is a bit of good news for the day.

Also heard that a family friend who is disabled and has underlying health problems and recent history of medical issues got it but is now recovering (still in hospital but off oxygen). She is exactly the sort of person you would think the virus would finish off, but just goes to show how unpredictable it is.

Let them do an approved list of the however many tens of thousands of items you can buy in supermarkets first and classify them into essential and non essential. Dead easy...then how many plod will they need to enforce it?

This will probably be another one like Derbyshire police and their spy drones where the media storm forces them to back pedal sharpish.

Your geography is pretty shit if you think the 10 miles of the Straits of Dover are comparable to the Tasman Sea. :/
And you conveniently ignore how many people pass in and out of the European countries each day (in normal times) against how many travel in and out of NZ each day.

Last week's USA unemployment claims graph updated. No other recession comes close by this metric.

Another week, another 6.6M new unemployment claims in the US. Last week was updated to 6.9M

    It is stupid.

If they are going to say some items are not essential, then they should stop stocking the shelves with them. Okay, that is a logistical nightmare because they'd have to put the stock away, but no-one can tell me that the fresh flowers at the supermarket are essential, or the bedding plants they are also selling.

Local Asda were selling bloody great barbecues last week, that's a joke considering how many BBQ parties were broken up last weekend.

Gardening is for some people is what cycling is to me, the activity that keeps them sane. Any activity that people can do at home should be a priority. As was pointed out upthread, off-licenses are apparently essential. And nobody has banned smoking or tobacco sales in the middle of a respiratory health epidemic. Go, go, gardeners, I say.

He's had to 'backtrack' on this....

    Nick Adderley
    @NorthantsChief
To be clear on the shopping trolley issue: This is about essential and necessary journeys, not what’s in your trolley. I have been clear that we will not be judge and jury on what is an essential item or not, but we may now probe the purpose of the journey.

Amazing and worrying. If you're going to make an official statement to the press, you'd think you'd get it correct the first time.

My initial assessment of him wasn't far off the mark then. Or of the fact that they'd have to backpedal sharpish.

I'm not sure if this backdating has always happened and they've just started telling us, or if it's a new thing.

140 deaths for yesterday would be very low.

    From the BBC website.
England reports 765 new coronavirus deaths
NHS England has recorded 765 new deaths in hospital from coronavirus.
It said that 140 of them occurred yesterday, while 568 took place between 1 April and 7 April.
The remaining 57 deaths took place in March, including two on 19 March and one on 16 March.

If you are a bit large, they'll stop you, and say that you could do with a diet anyway. No food is essential for you, porky. Get your loo rolls and be gone.

It's a proper Trump style piece of "clarification".

"We will not at this stage be starting to marshal supermarkets and check-in the items in baskets and trolleys to see whether it is a legitimate necessary item but...if people do not head the warnings...we will start to do that”

Clarified to: "We will not be searching trolleys or baskets and will not be carrying out road blocks. "

Unguarded, despotism just desperate to be put into action. Imagine if our politicians spoke so candidly.

So, my nan is in hospital after a fall. She already had a chest infection (bacteria), but has tested positive for Covid-19 also. She was already living with cancer in her kidney, so this might be the final straw...and no one can visit her.
