Only Murders in the Building Disney+
A quirky light-hearted comedy. It's a good watch with Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez.
Selena Gomez has a unique voice, but it kinda works.

I finally watched Breaking Bad. Bit underwhelmed. I suspect it is because I didn't really like any of the characters.

Mike was the best character, not sure you are really meant to like any of them though.
Yes, as I said, I think that's why I didn't really like it. Not that it is wrong, just not for me.

I didn't have the sticking power to watch it all, but that was my feeling in the first couple of seasons too. I need to have some redeeming quality in one of the characters to make me care, even just a little bit. By contrast, in The Wire, nearly all of the characters had something that you could hang onto.

Will almost certainly have to see We Own This City, @ddraver , but will probably have to reclaim my box set of The Wire and watch it for a fourth time first... so many classic sequences and powerful over-arching storylines.

Mike is also in the Breaking Bad spin off, Better Call Saul. He is equally good in that.

I highly recommend Better Call Saul for those who enjoyed Breaking Bad.

It focuses on the lawyer Saul Goodman, and how he spiralled into the dodgy guy in Breaking Bad.

Towards the end of Better Call Saul, i'm on season 5 now, the timeline starts approaching Breaking Bad territory, and it is rumoured that Walt and Jesse are to play cameo roles.
Yeah, I've watching those. Caught up and just watched the ones they've released of season 6, didn't drop a full season for some reason.

Yeah, for some reason they had a mid season break during season 6. (They did the same with the final season of Ozark too, another brilliant series). I believe it continues midway through this month. Maybe it's to add to the intrigue and excitement, lol.

Knowing that this season is the last of Better Call Saul I'm really looking forward to the remaining few episodes now, especially how they bring Walt and Jesse into it.

The boys season three finale. Consistently excellent. Most enjoyable series to watch recently.

Enjoyed the scene with "Jacob Chansley" (guy with buffalo hat) in the background.
Whole series is basically a parody of Trump.

*Nice pic of Miriam by the way - she is clearly under utilised, why isn't she in more series - I think a major investigation should be carried out forthwith.

she's just posted another clip from Diabolik on Insta, delayed due to Covid but hopefully we'll get it soon

A cautious suggestion if you fancy something that stretches boundaries.

    Netflix: Love, death and robots.

Many standalone animated short stories. Very much reminds me of black mirror for a random mix of darkly humorous content.

Accept you won’t like all of it but there are some absolute gems amongst them. The animation styles are quite broad too. Each is only 10-20 mins.

I bought Disney+ for a month so I could download some stuff for the airport/plane - doesn't work on PC...

However, I did see some things

*The Mandolorian - I quite enjoyed this. It's a lot of fight scenes which all pull together in a way that is predictable, but nevertheless quite satisfying. Baby Yoda is just impossibly lovable too. One of the best CGI characters I can think of, it's very hard not to fall in love with him and thus get really quite invested. Moreso that most Star Wars I've seen - which is already pretty good at that.

*Obi Wan Kanobi - Similar in some ways but still a worthy watch. Slightly cheesy and Ewan's over-emo delivery almost gets a little bit too much but it still works out well enough.

Good to see Hayden Christiensonalenalon seems to be doing ok too. I have some respect for child actors like him and Rupert Grint who realised they really weren't actually that good, took the money, spent it wisely and ran.

*Pistol - total change of scene obviously. Really enjoying it. Some of it slightly hammed up a la Bohemian Rhapsody, especially Johnny Rotton, but I'm enjoying it.

Yes, Lydon has said that it's all B*ll*cks, but I can imagine he could have made the entire thing himself but would still say that at the end anyway...

    Can I recommended -

    The Beatles - Get Back

    Wandavision

    Loki

My kids loved Falcon & The Winter Soldier- I though it OK

    Book of Boba Fett

Slaying the Badger is on there - but you've probably seen it

Actually, watch Wandavision last as its miles ahead of the other MCU TV series

All the 'safe' Marvel TV stuff is very watchable (apart from that Miss Marvel thing - bloody hell that's bad). But none of it comes close to Daredevil which has been moved across to Disney+ from Netflix.

It's good to see that the Daredevil world is now being brought back via various MCU outings: the last Spiderman film, Hawkeye, She Hulk, Echo and then Daredevil: Born Again. Charlie Cox has made the character his, as has Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin. It's proper 'adult' Marvel.

    Trainwreck Woodstock 99 on Netflix.

Very good - a succession of terrible decisions building on each other told with a good selection of footage and interviews.

My personal favourite moment is when the Chili Peppers are asked to go on and calm the crowd down because there's some arson going on and the fire crew won't go out because it's all gone to hell, so they go out and instead play a cover of Fire by Jimi Hendrix.

I've been watching the American Crime Story series on OJ Simpson again.

If you havent watched it you MUST! it is simply exceptional.

It's the second time I've watched the verdict being read out - a verdict that we all know - and my heart was pounding again!

I genuinely can't think of another show like it.

    The Orville Disney+

A comedy send up of Star Trek. The first couple of episodes were a bit iffy, but it's got better. The storylines are generally better than ST, with the addition of comedy moments, plus looks better too.
Teaching a synthetic life form about practical jokes, was (sorry) a lol episode.

It’s an interesting insight into leadership minds that simply ignore all negative feedback.

The biggest oddity is that you have an idea in mind of a hippy fest (a la Woodstock) but create a lineup that simply won’t attract that crowd.

It’s a bit like inviting hip hop acts to a village fete.

Got to say, this is a weird lineup for the Saturday night - Alanis Morissette, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against The Machine and Metallica.

I'm amazed there was anyone performing after that Limp Bizkit set.

As a counter argument The Who and Jimi Hendrix were hardly hippies either.

    I think that’s a fair point.
My argument would be that the original Woodstock had a social movement behind it that extended beyond the music.

This was just a commercial venture gaining free marketing from the name and one associated organiser. To the paying clientele, the social aspect was largely irrelevant and the links to hippie culture very spurious.

Which wouldn’t have been a problem if you adapted to the reality you encountered. It’s not like you can’t have successful rock festivals.

    Update:
Tried season2. It's a bit like the first, but all the good elements have been removed. Some weak ancillary characters have been added, and there's an injection of woke. A prime example of sequel syndrome.
    I gave up.

Didn't recognise Colin Farrell or Viggo Mortensen. YT is not prone to Claustrophobia but there were a couple of occasions.... well you watch and see.

I will add to this that the Storyville documentary series on this which is 6+ movie-length episodes of the "real life" story is also an amazing bit of telly.

They all used to be buried on iPlayer somewhere. There are a lot of hidden gems worth a watch. Not least the Armstrong ones.

Edit - found them. The one on Notre Dame is also a must see. Some genuinely exceptional bravery but also the total farce of trying to rescue the crown of thorns* told by a firefighter who I suspect is at best non-christian, probably atheist and who is fully able to appreciate the black comedy of what happened.

Edit edit - you might be able to tell I've been down a bit of a hole with this recently. I honestly thought the dude was still in jail or dead but no, the fu*ker's on twitter!

    Better call Saul is complete.
A masterclass of story telling and a story with a clear (not disappointing) ending.

Still managed to wrong foot several times with where it looked to be heading in the latter episodes.

This reviewer seems to have appreciated it too.

Absolutely loved the final few episodes (and the whole series). I couldn’t think how they could possibly end it in a satisfactory way, yet the writers managed to tie everything together in a way that was believable, true to form and sweetly poignant. I’ll really miss this series.

All the similarities with A Christmas Carol in the last episode were excellent.
