If you like Game of Thrones but find the mystical and dragon stuff a bit much then try Vikings.

Yes, the Vikings all 5 seasons are excellent, I watched all the seasons, and Ragnar is my favorite but the last season was not soo good.
  • Just begun watching the latest offering from All4/More4 called Astrid: Murder in Paris.
It looks as if they’ve found another winner.
It’s a very quirky “buddy” combination of a disorganised cop and an autistic records clerk.
Obviously they come together to solve murders etc.

Of a similar vein they also have The Wagner Method, which is no longer available on the skybox but still available on All4.

Saw the Astrid: Murder in Paris... really enjoyed it, as you say "quirky" and amusing and different. Worked well I thought.

Looking forward to this, really enjoyed Hjerson , despite it being released week by week, which I think Astrid may well be as well.

I think I started watching the Wagner method due to your recommendation @blazing_saddles , and very good it was to. I was just thinking I can't have watched them all, but having checked there only appears to have been 5 episodes :/

As an aside, and mostly due to being off sick with flu this week, I have finished watching both 'The Mafia only kill in the summer' and 'The Hunter' - both of which are set in different eras, and present a very different perspective on the same thing basically. one very serious (The hunter) and one with loads of dark humour, and some other light hearted moments.
*Note the Hunter does have a series 3, so hopefully coming to WP next year.

Also, having been off sick, I caned through 'Only murders in the building' series 1 as recommended to me by my bro - very light touch, but a good cast, and highly enjoyable I though.

We are also 4 episodes into Shetland series 7 - always liked this series, not sure what they are planning to do when the lead Henshall quits, I gather they are continuing, but I half wonder if they are going to do a major refresh of the cast, despite bringing back in his old senior officer in the 4th episode - I may be wrong.

Quite getting into this Bulgarian mysterious crime drama called "The Devil's Throat". Not your usual cop/crime caper, it's a bit more edgy. Also beautifully filmed in stunning countryside. It's one of the Walter Presents series so usually has some merit.

I feel like I may recognise the gent in your trailer still, and no I don't mean Walter!

The only real tripe I have found on WP, was something called Trauma.

It's fair to say it lived up to it's name, it was really really dire. Bad acting, storylines that made absolutely no sense. I can only assume someone offered it to WP as a freebie if they bought some other decent series.

Everything else on WP, and I have watched a LOT from it, has ranged between good to exceptional - imho.

    Yup.
I have seen it and really enjoyed it. Another one I would recommend.

Finally finished Better Call Saul. Very well wrapped up, felt like a series that knew where it was going rather than continually looking to force another series. I did find the use of black and white a bit too much at times but understood why it was done.

Love Better Call Saul. So beautifully and cinematically shot. It was the thing that my son and I used to watch together of an evening. Had to have a bit of a binge towards the end as he was off to Uni and wanted to finish it before he went. Its weird how you can watch an episode and so much happens without appearing as such. Great storytelling. Great character development. Every character has a purpose in the story(ies).

When he's back on hols we'll start on Breaking Bad even though I've seen it all I can watch it all again.

    Rings of Power.

    Wow that was dull.

The most expensive TV show ever created apparently. Clearly not spent on the writers...

The mrs and I didn’t get through the first episode.
Later read a review saying it warmed up around episode 6 and considered giving it another try.
I’m thinking not based on your post.

Well if that's the case then you clearly missed a LOT! It's one of those things you have to watch rather than have as noise in the background.

Quite enjoyed it. The first episode was a bit overlong and plodding but I guess they were setting the scene. it really ramps up from episode 3 to the end. Didn't like the Irish-based Harfoots but I really liked the Dwarves.

Was it the same people who did GoT s8?

    Same problems,

    Awful dialogue
    Teleporting armour
    Ridiculous plot armour
Over-reliance on CGI to cover poor writing.

The dwarves were, admittedly, ok. Galadriel is frankly one of the most annoying leading characters ever commited to screen.

I watched the Sicily episode before going to Sicily and the food bits are OK, but the scenery filming is incredible. Went on to watch the Piedmont episode and am totally hooked.

What makes it even better is that all the recipes are available online with a Google search. All the ones I've tried are easy to make, and very tasty!

Wisting season 2 BBC iplayer. Nordic detective series. Good cast of characters, reasonable amount of gore. Trinity from the Matrix in a few episodes as an FBI agent. Worth a watch.

House of the Dragon did warm up in the last 3 series to be fair. Not sure that 30% good is really an acceptable ratio but, well hey I watched it all so...

We've only watched one so far, and it's beautifully shot, seemingly casual dialogue, slow pace, perfect escapist immersive television. 10/10.

Watched Astrid as well - very enjoyable, looking forward to more, though they are only releasing them a week at a time.

Something to hide, thanks to the turbo, I am 75% through.
Decent acting, nice surroundings in general, can't really see where it is going currently, but the last episode should reveal all, suspect it might be a disappointing end, hoping to be proved wrong.

Something that we are watching again and appropriately so seeing as it's close to Halloween is "Ash vs Evil Dead" the tv series available on Nitflux. If you like horror and comedy and a whole LOT of gore then this is one for you! It has Bruce Campbell, the hero from the original 80's films, as the hero again but I think time has improved him and he completely owns the role. It's OTT horror at it's best. It's bizarre. It's horrific. It's weird. It's creepy. It's great! I think the director said "well, we've got 50 gallons of this fake blood just how are we going to squeeze that into a 27 minute episode", and boy do they do just that!
As a plus they have some great tunes as a soundtrack. Rock on!

I'm glad you brought this up. An old mate of mine, an ex work colleague from years back told me about "ash vs evil dead." He loved it and highly recommended it. He left his position around that time and I forgot all about this series he'd told me about.

And the ironic thing is, a pure twist of fate, I watched the original "evil dead" only last night, so it's just set me up nicely now for "ash."

Good reminder, ta. I watched a few episodes before getting sidetracked onto something else. It's all the things you said, but also pretty tongue in cheek and with a lot of nods to the original Evil Dead movies.

    Must watch a few more...

Finished watching something to hide last night, I was wrong, they managed a very good and credible ending in a way - no big disappointment, a fairly satisfactory conclusion I thought.

On the turbo this am, started watching Artic Circle via Walter Presents.
Excellent cast, lead by the fabulous Lina Kuustonen - 1.5 episodes in so far, and bodes well, not fast moving, very atmospheric surroundings, I think it will be a good solid series.
