I have some Castelli nanoflex knee warmers, that seemed to bead water the first couple of times it rained and then gave up. Then I have several pairs of arm warmers, all of which seem to have either gone into holes or had the grippers come adrift on them.

Considering getting a set of dhb Aeron Rain Defence arm and knee warmers. Anyone have any thoughts on them? Do they continue to bead rain as they get older?

Like all things the treatment wears off but these and the Lusso ones are windtex so are actually waterproof. There are seams and the water can sit on the outside when it does wear off but they are a better bet.

I'm not really after proper water proof. I'm just after something that might keep the worst of it out when I get caught out on the commute in the autumn and spring.

Sounds like these might be just the thing. I shall stick them on the Christmas list :)

Never reviewed it but it's simply a cut down Espresso et al. But with a lesser range so more for spring and autumn riding. I think the price reduction takes into account that the Transparente is lighter and can go almost as low but better for going high.

Can you re-treat the DHB Rain Defence kit does anyone know ?

Or could you just get any old leg/armwarmers and nikwax those anyway ?

You can re-activate Parentini's K-Dry armwarmers etc (I;m assuming they're similar to DHB's roubaix style fabric with water repellency treatment added to the fabric) by putting them in a Dryer on a warm setting for about 20-30mins.

You could try this technique. Depends if you've been washing them correctly though. Some detergents will have stripped the treatment completely from the fabric

The castelli nanoflex I have, have only ever been washed with either halo sports wash, or more often a small amount of fairy non-bio powder.

I tried reactivating them in the tumble dryer, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

I've had an instance where Halo has stripped the waterproofing off a cloth nappy liner before, so some waterproofing might be susceptible to it ( I hadn't realised it was in the machine before i stuck my stuff in)

I want to find a replacement intermediate jacket. I have looked at the Poggio, one of the Ale 'jackets' and some reviewed here. Really don't know what to go for.

  • It's cheap enough to suit the bill. There's quite a lot of choice in that market segment. Are you a small? CRC only have that left in the Poggio, there's a medium in the Free and the Mortirolo is probably overdoing it.

I'd have a look at the dhb stuff mind, not the Aeron softshell, but stuff like this:

I've nikwaxed normal roubaix type arms warmers, tights and a long sleeve jersey before. It can work quite well but seemed to work on some fabrics better than others. I used the wash in stuff generally, but might try the spray on proofer when I do it again. Supposedly this retains the wicking of the inner fabric such as recommended for re-proofing softshell material. This is also the recommended treatment for the Castelli Nanoflex gear when the original DWR fades, which it will. Re-applied DWR never seems to be as good as what comes out of the factory, the possible exception being Paramo kit which seems to come up brilliantly time after time. But that's another story.

I quite like that plus it comes in other colours than Rapha black.

    Looked at the Mortirolo, There's a 3 and a 4 and a 2016... Sometimes, there's too much choice.

The issue with the wash in stuff is that it coats both inside and outside with DWR, so it impacts the breathability. I use the grangers spray on stuff which seems to work really well so far.

Yes. Might give that a go. With the wash in, not sure it's a breathabililty issue, rather that wicking is affected.

    What about this:

It's fluorocarbon based, so maybe a little more 'hardcore'?

Hmm, I would go for something a bit more clothing specific. https://grangers.co.uk/product/xtreme-repel is what I use, no idea if there is better, I started using Grangers as I've a load of arcteryx gear for skiing, mountains, etc and this is the stuff they recommend.

I use this https://grangers.co.uk/product/performance-wash to wash my DWP treated gear as it's designed to wash whilst protecting the DWP layer. My routine is to wash the gear in this and then tumble dry at low heat until dryish, this seems to be fine for the gear and the water resistance seems to hold up pretty well. I'm not often having to reproof.

Forgot to add, amazon flog the grangers stuff, cheaper than going direct.
  • Are stoats soft? Cos this Chapeau jersey is softer than a stoat I reckon.

I've used both grangers and nikwax spray on (TX.Direct) for stuff with a liner as I'm a outdoor walking fanatic ( aka, I've got a dog).
To me they seem similar quality, and I normally go with whatever is the cheapest - I've got 4L of nikwax washin and 3L of TX.direct to hold me through this winter...

Dunno but I picked up an escaped weasel once. I won't be doing that again. He was well Hard and bit me - the ungrateful sod.

I'd have thought Stoats weren't too dissimilar ?
  • Sounds nasty, right, recently dead stoats, are they soft? Cos this Chapeau is softer than my female cat and she has fur like what I imagine cats in heaven have.

Don't the Lords wear cloaks made of stoats fur?

Thumbs up for the HH freeze. Might have to get another one - you know, one in the wash and all that.
Best base layer I have now.

I got my HH from here which seems the best price although it's plus post. I've not worn it out of the house yet but it's feels lovely!
