Here is a quota system that was shut down in 2015.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_quota#:~:text=Milk quotas were first introduced,'s) Common Agricultural Policy.&text=This levy was then to,the farmers or dairies involved.
Fishing quotas currently are a traded commodity. That is to say if you had a load of cash you could go to current holders and buy them. However they only have a value as long as they rules behind them are stable. Post Brexit these will have significantly less security as a single government is much more able to change the system potentially not in your favour. I imagine if you are a foreign company with UK quota then you should be nervous. There is no reason that the UK government having had a environmental review decide to do some changes that may not be to your liking. It could decide to favour one type of fishing over your type. It could decree that all quota is held by UK registered companies or individuals for tax purposes and prevent offshoring of profits this way. They would find little resistance from your smaller local fishermen that have an actual democratic voice and the government has the most to gain from.0 -

The question should be why these fish hate Britain so much.“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -
Could they be unreconciled remainers?tailwindhome said:

Barnier thinks that there might be a short period of no deal on the basis it will not be possible to make a deal operational in time.0
-
Do you reckon the fish will know if they are in British / French / Norwegian waters? Do British fish now need to show a blue passport to leave their area? Maybe it's like Dukes of Hazard where they'll be getting chased by a French trawler and they just escape over the county line into UK waters to safety.0

Suspect that could be a tactical move.TheBigBean said:Barnier thinks that there might be a short period of no deal on the basis it will not be possible to make a deal operational in time.
Let us experience the chaos of abrupt change.
And for clarification, much as I am a remainer, I see abrupt change being problematic irrespective of my Brexit position.0 -
I'm not sure that is an option either, but there would at least be an agreed legal text, so perhaps.surrey_commuter said:

The British fish are small and the EU pond is large.Pross said:Do you reckon the fish will know if they are in British / French / Norwegian waters? The EU have bigger fish to fry.
Further analogies are available.0 -

I don't think that makes it more likely to be a complete picture.tailwindhome said:

I suspect all the ones your link shows very close to the coast are smaller vessels while the other map shows the bigger trawlers.kingstongraham said:

Might turn out that map was bobbins
I'm not invested enough to reconcile fleet positions from various sources
As per there is a lot of backward and forwards under the tweet as too what its showing“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -
They could check with a fisherman but they'll either be fishing, or in the pub.tailwindhome said:

FFS the quality of journalism - "Does Australia have a tunnel to mainland Europe?"0

Did you know that if you had friction free tunnels and relied upon gravity only, the time between any two points on earth would be the same? So London to Sydney would take the same time as London to Canvey Island.kingstongraham said:FFS the quality of journalism - "Does Australia have a tunnel to mainland Europe?"

The reporting is interesting at the moment. Deal more likely as Boris makes concession. That the EU has dropped its desire to unilaterally decide to impose tariffs is of no consequence.0
-
Perhaps the price the UK has to pay is acting like it has capitulated.0
-
I'm thinking that the main reason for delaying the collapse is neither side want to be seen as the side capitulating and/or giving up.TheBigBean said:Perhaps the price the UK has to pay is acting like it has capitulated.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Anyone familiar with the story of the boy who Flagged 🐺..?
Just assuming it's someone who's got tired of the relentless bile. I still miss the 'ignore' function of the old format, and I'm guessing that the flagger does too.0
