Am I the only person who thinks J-Rod can't win a grand tour?

He can podium but he can't win. Unless the Giro bust out that sepia lens they used back in 05 again

Aru is going to be interesting to watch. Dark horse or too early for him (or will he just have to sacrifice himself for Scarponi)?
He's 100-1 with most bookies which seems like good each way value to me. I can't see Astana backing Scarponi 100% - he'll have his own race to ride.

I'm not a gambler but quite fancy a tenner on that.

From that photo above it's amazing how long a stretch the riders went down over, really high speed crash that one. I think they showed Sky doing nearly 60kmh in that stretch.

I think he can win the Vuelta at some point if none of the big guns turn up, it's designed for him.

As SK in commentary suggested, I think the steel manhole had a lot to do with it - he wobbled and then went straight down.

I have a lot of time for you generally Mr f72 but any more of that slack Yankee verb-creep and we'll be having words.

    Grammatically correct ones.

I can never decide about TTTs. I'm not a huge fan but it provides balance as teams with loads of climbers will tend to struggle. Unfortunately one incident can ruin the race for an entire team rather than just one rider. One thing I don't like is having them as an opening stage.

I'd rather have them at the start of the whole thing than have them shake up the GC halfway through - it always makes me feel like the first portion of racing was a bit of a con and the TTT has reset the clock. Personally I'd rather not have them at all - if a team wants to stuff their roster with climbers then so be it, as (perhaps naively of me) it simply means that there's one more way to win the GC instead of defaulting to whoever can be there or thereabouts on the mountains and dominant in the ITTs.

Don't you just love the lottery of the TTT.

I was hoping that someone on the course would have painted a mural of Roche, Kelly, Froome and Wiggins.

So sad. Nothing to be done. Professional bike racing is cruel.

I know. If Torsten Schmidt saw that set of profiles he would do his nut.

Ignoring the murals, that looks like a triathlon club out on a Sunday ride, except with sleeves...

Look more like a pro team on a training ride to me...

Gutted for Dan Martin. Again. I would blame it on him spending too much time on foreign roads but you've got to blame whoever was at the front of the line for riding right over the manhole covers. I would've thought the teams might have spent a fair chunk of time reccying the course but maybe not judging from that incident and the number of teams that seemed surprised by some if the corners.

Red helmet looked pretty awful imo:

Apparently Giro came and delivered all the helmets the same day.
