Too early I know, but Dan Martin back to have a go at the TdF instead?

Was thinking that. Who would Garmin have as team leader if not him?

So OGE take it,a Svein in pink and Durbridge in young rider's jersey.

I notice BMC put Evans in a different coloured helmet, presumably so he's easy for the others to spot in case of difficulty.

Cadel can be notoriously touchy - perhaps nobody dared tell him to wear the official kit?
I did consider that it might just be him being awkward. Still, it's a good idea.

My tongue was in my cheek - I agree it's a neat idea, although presumably most riders are readily identifiable to their team-mates by size of arse, pedalling style etc?

It would be a waste not to. In 2010 Vande Velde crashed out of the Giro on stage 3 (before it reached Italy), so they put him in the Tour, where he crashed out on stage 2 (before it reached France), so they then put him in the Vuelta (he finished that one)

Strikes me as something Peiper would do. It's a little thing but pretty clever.

I bloody hate TTT's. Poor luck for Dan Martin but not really many huge gaps.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

Results shape that up nicely - just a shame for JRod really with that awful time. Very long race and a ridiculously hard 3rd week so could be all over the place.

Dan Martin cant TT so will struggle always in the Tour and he is better suited to Giro racing and climbs. Shame although I dont think he had particularly good stage racer form coming in.

I personally would do away with TTTs in Grand Tours, but as it happens this one has produced pretty much the perfect set of time gaps going into the next 3 weeks.

TTTs also have the function of stopping teams picking a team full of climbing specialists

I can never decide about TTTs. I'm not a huge fan but it provides balance as teams with loads of climbers will tend to struggle. Unfortunately one incident can ruin the race for an entire team rather than just one rider. One thing I don't like is having them as an opening stage.

What happened to Dan Martin? Got in late and was cooking the dinner with it on in the background but I missed his accident.

If he's got a desire to actually contest GC a little I'd say just save the legs and go for the Vuelta. If he wants to stage hunt as he always seems to prefer then the TdF is the bigger exposure.

He was in the middle of the team train along a wide straight stretch of road full gas and they went over a couple of manhole covers - he either jarred or slipped on the second one and went down bringing all but the first four of the team with him. Looked bad straight away.

edit - I know it's bad luck but I can't understand why the lead rider went over them - there seemed plenty of room to avoid (easy from here I know).

His bike went from under him on a straight section (we don't know why). The three riders behind him in the line came down like skittles. Martin out (possible collarbone). Garmin lose three and a half minutes, possibly as many as three other riders outside the time limit. Garmageddon.

Has anyone checked the road for pens?

Aru is going to be interesting to watch. Dark horse or too early for him (or will he just have to sacrifice himself for Scarponi)?

It's certainly been a great success for the Giro, justifying what seemed like an odd decision at the time.

Belfast and cycling are really natural partners - both tarnished by a popular image from past which they are trying to move on from but which occasionally rears its ugly head again.

He's 100-1 with most bookies which seems like good each way value to me. I can't see Astana backing Scarponi 100% - he'll have his own race to ride.

This is a big one in an age of stifling mountain trains.

I get the lottery element, but it's another way for riders like Cadel to put time into superior climbers. That's worth the risk of an unfair outcome. Sadly J-Rod's going to really struggle now.

In addition to stage hunting, Team <redacted> should act as guns for hire for J-Rod, & protection for Rigo, to buy some Tour insurance.
