Against my better judgement I'm in. Just about to put the kids to bed then it's time to get stuck in.
  • Stage 1 done!: http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/ride ... bber-Glove

Typically it looks like my Garmin Ant stick is playing up, so Suunto stick ordered... I went for it on the 20 minute interval and managed to increase my FTP by 15% which is a good result, although I'm sure I would have had an extra watt or two if the USB stick was working 100%

I'll join the group and then go do it all again... NOT!

Same boat as Jon .. Previous FTP - 268. New FTP - 288.

Rode the interval at 304W, HR 179, Cadence 99. Could not lift it at the end, in fact started to die about 5-6 mins to go, and managed to just about hold on.

If nothing else on the Tour I have some new medals for 5mins to 30mins, and I've crossed the 4W/kg barrier! 4.18W/kg now.

Recovery milk drunk. Showered. Foam Rollered. Now for dinner and watch the frankly pathetically easy Tour Down Under.

I also videoed the workout on my GoPro .. might upload the suffering if it's funny.

I think that was the nastiest 20 minutes I've ever spent on a bike.
Their RPE and mine are very different !

Me too. I swapped my gp4000s out a couple if weeks ago so I didn't wear them out and have been dying during workouts since, really cant uderstand why. I decided I needed to retest so Rubber Glove came along just at the right time. Ftp has gone from 261 to 222 though so feel like a novice again. :( Still, the ToS should be more of a realistic proposition now! Cant believe how much difference a tyre can make.

    Yay! FTP down 70w!
Turns out Trainer road was WAY overreadeing compared to powertap. At least I have a marker now, all I've been doing is sprint training to be fair.

My FTP went from 262 to 239 when I got a powertap :(

I think the bigger issue with virtual power for me is that my turbo (Elite Power Fluid) does not have a constant speed/power curve, it changes as it heats up on long intervals. On rubber glove yesterday at the beginning of the 20 min interval I was spinning at ~92 rpm to maintain ~240W as measured by the powertap. I did the first half of the interval in the same gear after 10 min I needed to spin ~98 rpm to hit the same power. You can see here http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/ride ... bber-Glove. If I was using virtual power that would mean I could have actually slacked off as the interval went on and still recorded the same power. I am sure some turbos are much better in this regard, but it is certainly an issue with mine.

    Anyway...

I was hoping to get ISLAGIATT done today but I couldnt get 2hrs in the pain cave signed off by the Mrs, will aim to get it done first thing tomorrow morning. Gonna do some, err, carb loading with beer and spicy food tonight :)

Jeez Stage 1 was the worst time I've had on a bike - I turned myself inside out on that last 20 mins - and then they tried to tell me my FTP was lower than when I began 8 weeks ago ?? Could it be a calibration problem ?

By comparison ISLIAGIATT was a walk in the park ?
  • Well that was horrible. CAn't remrmber a less enjoyable hour on the bike :(

Ride started badly as the streaming on rubber glove via. strava was terrible. So stuck on some tunes and tried to follow the line in TR.

Felt a bit wonky all day but felt bloody awful on the bike from the word go. Couldn't get my HR above 150/160 and every time I got close legs turned to jelly :( Even trying to be bloody minded didn't work, so yo yo'd around all over the place in the last 20 minutes. Head's not emotionally right (some really bad close family news) at the moment but can that really mess you up physically as well? Feel really fed up with myself but just couldn't get going.

On a brighter note tomorrow is another day and I'll try Islagiatt in the morning and see how we go.

    MMMUUUUUUWWWWWWAAAAAHHHHAAAAHAHAHAHA ...

ALL YOU GUYS WHO THOUGHT STAGE 1 WAS HARD AND INCREASED YOUR FTP ARE GONA DIE ON STAGE 2!

I cracked on the 3rd interval and had to limp to the end of it, then had to reduce power on the 4th, but managed to recover enough to go full power on the 5th. Got new medals for 60 and 90 minutes.

    45 minutes in Zone 4.

87% of my 1hr power for 2 hours, based off my new FTP. What I rode would have been 94% FTP for 2 hours based off my old FTP.

Fortunately mine went down - I bet I still die on my arse!

Just downloaded the vid, will nail it laters,
  • Christ alive that was long and brutal.

Glad I splashed out the £9 for the video last night as was really good with top music and would have struggled to get through without it.

May take on stage 3 tonight as may need a day off on Wednesday.

So far so good, that must have been the toughest single video, until Friday at least.

S**t the bed, that was brutal. Cracked on the sprint around 1:12 and knocked it down 3% still completed it above my previous ftp so generally happy.

On reflection I'm now a little disappointed in my self should have written rule 5 on the wall before i started

I'm getting a hell of an upper body workout from all the foam-rollering!

576 riders didnt complete Rubber Glove. All mouth and no bib shorts. Quarter of the field gone already.

Revolver is worrying me. I did it a week ago and barely completed at 361W for the intervals. Now I have to do 388W each interval. I know Im going to crack at some stage, and its not a nice feeling.

Out of interest, how was everyone's average HR during Stage 2? I averaged 3.45W/kg and 156bpm. Felt bad man.

Interesting. If I'd've gone off virtual power rather than my powertap, my ftp would be 320! Time for stage 2...

  • Turns out I wasn't as pathetically crap as I thought. 45 minutes in the room filled with the stench of burning rubber. I struggled to the end practically destroying my tyre in the process. By the end I was having to stand the whole time with my weight over the handle bars. Turns out the Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll isn't as bulletproof as they would like you to think. I "only" weigh 90-94kg and the RnR has only lasted 20 hours. Not impressed, warranty claim submitted to KK but I think that is the tour done for me, unless anyone has a bright idea how I can continue? Happy to bodge it to get to the end but a little worried about it snapping clean off.

Good job on the power output! ^

Try and borrow a turbo. Post on your clubs Facebook page that you need on urgently for the Tour. Lots of Couchlandrians will have one knocking round that they're not using. Don't tell them why you need it though!

Ok, so, Stage 3 complete. Probably the hardest Stage for me with the new FTP. Revolver. It's like playing Russian Roulette, only the barrel has 16 chambers and they're all loaded. And each time you shoot yourself you don't die, you just do some brain damage ..

    Stage 2 done - http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/ride ... -ISLAGIATT

That was pretty much horrific - the longest I have ever spent on the trainer and probably the longest time on the bike in months. Managed the first 1hr10 at 100% and then died hard on the sprints and had to wind it down to 95%. Thought I should HTFU so turned it back up to 100% for the last set. Ran out of liquid so had to stop and refill and also shout at my grilfriend who had turned the heating on (!) New 1hr and 90 minute records, pretty happy with that.

The video and music were great, really kept me going. I think last time I was sweating, gurning, and dribbling to trance was in a nightclub 10 years ago, funny how these things come round again.

Now I need to eat ~1300 calories....bonne chance everyone!

EDIT - just looked on trainerroad website and it hadnt uploaded the whole ride??? Re-synced and it seems ok now, I guess their servers are gettign hammered!

Managed that ok, had to REALLY dig deep a few times as all my training over winter has been for track sprinting so nothing over an hour really and even then just short and sharp with plenty recovery. Managed to hit/exceed most of the targets. IF was 0.92. Very happy with that. Now for FOOOOOOOOD!!!

Bit of a pi55er about the trainer mate :(
I take it you've asked locally off mates to see if they have one you can borrow?

  • Managed ISLAGIATT yesterday at 100% - it was brutal! Longest ever ride on a turbo, but got 13 new records!!!
    http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/ride ... -ISLAGIATT

Thought Revolver today would be easier being less than an hour, but I'm sure it was even worse! Just had nothing in my legs today... http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/ride ... -Aug-2012-

dw300: Do you feel much benefit from the foam rollering? My legs are suffering tonight, so I'll consider anything (except an ice bath)!
