They all won a stage in which another rider died through a crash: Riviere, Kivilev, Casartelli, Weylandt
    Riviere didn't die.

 Oooops  you're right. That TdF crash put him in a wheelchair and he died young, I always assumed they were related. It was actually from cancer.

Hmm, I guess the answer is now 'winning a stage in which another rider had a career-ending crash'. Hmm, doesn't have the same ring to it...

So, Google and Excel (I'm not busy...) tell me there is a unique answer to this.

Some interesting names on the list. Everyone goes on about Thomas's win in the juniors, but I don't hear much mention of Stannard's or indeed Sagan's second places. Also, a lot of big names won the U23s, but then haven't won the main event.

I'm sure I'd have got it if you had phrased it like that.

Indeed, I was surprised there are not more.

From FJS. What connects Martin van Geneugden, Davide Rebellin, Richard Virenque and Vicioso. Hint: they had a win that wasnt on the front page

OK, time to give the answer I guess:

They all won a stage in which another rider died through a crash: Riviere, Kivilev, Casartelli, Weylandt
Riviere didn't actually die in the crash though, he was 'just' paralysed.

Are we restricted to cycling? I could do with the answer to the following.

Being finicky, ventilates place in striking environment (4-9)

They have all been chosen as luxury items on Desert Island Discs.

Either that or they're nicknames for doping products.

hmm close but that doesn't apply to the first 2... oh I'll give it they all are methods of cheating that have been used: trains at the first few TdF's and cork (on a wire towed by a car)

Are we lacking a question ?

What do Joaquim Rodriguez and Herman Van Springel have in common (and only those two) ?
(from UCI World Tour website so must be true... )

They've been on the podium of all three Grand Tours without actually winning one.

The above Rich answer above might be true, but my first thought was that both lost a GT victory on the last day’s TT.
I know that was also true for Fignon, but he at least did win a GT, in fact several, but Van Springel never won one and so far neither has Rodriguez.

I know Quercus Suber is the latin name for a cork tree, but I don't follow. Please explain.
Are you saying 'cork' is simply the term for when being pulled on a wire?
Somehow it doesn't make sense to me - in French it's the same word for a cork in a bottle and for a traffic jam, bouchon, and you don't go faster in a traffic jam. Although I suppose you do go about the same speed as the cars in front, as if all wired together.

He literally put a cork at the end of some wire, held it in his teeth and got dragged along.

Yes. Very good. I wanted to add the first British tour of Britain winner, but couldn't work out who it was.

JTL I think, if we're talking the current ToB ?
    - not Milk Race/Kelloggs or the earlier ToB run by BLRC

I would have said Mauricio Ardila.

I wanted to include the BLRC stuff which was why it was tricky.

Nuts! I'll try reading the whole question next time...
