OK, let's make it a bit easier by adding a fourth name:

Martin van Geneugden, Davide Rebellin, Richard Virenque and Angel Vicioso

Guess.....Have they appeared in reality TV shows?

    Hehe

Googling Martin van Geneugden tells me this is highly unlikely

Ah! Their surnames all begin with V.

    Apart from Rebellin.

(Even Google isn't solving this one)

Thought it would be doable with Vicioso added. Last hint: they had a win that wasnt on the front page

Fignon won. The second was a Spaniard - a BH rider I think - Pino? Fuente? There's a photo of the finish that is one of those ones that's always stuck with me - Fignon with a huge celebration while the other guy pounds his handlebars.

Yes (aside from the typo). Good knowledge!

    1. Laurent Fignon (Système U): 6hr 7min 5sec
    2. Anselmo Fuerte (BH) s.t.
    3. Fabio Parra (Cafe de Colombia) @ 39sec
    4. Pedro Delgado (PDM) @ 57sec
    5. Stephen Roche (Carrera) @ 1min 1sec

Most other stages I would have forgotten - but that one was special.

This is the photo I mentioned:

    Typo? Isn't Fuente this guy...

That's José Manuel Fuente not Anselmo Fuerte. So that's the wrong answer then.

    Outstanding questions:

From FJS. What connects Martin van Geneugden, Davide Rebellin, Richard Virenque and Vicioso. Hint: they had a win that wasnt on the front page.

From Art Vandelay. Who's this and why is he wearing world champ stripes?

Fuente would have been 43 in 1987, and as we all know, that's way too old to be winning anything at a GT. Oh wait...

To answer Art Vandelay's question, that Ivan Stevic, who won the inaugural, and only, World B Championships back in 2007.

Please don't tell me he's still wearing the jersey.

If I was world champion in anything, I'd still be wearing the jersey and telling everyone about it. In fact, I have a friend who is a world champion long distance runner and I repeatedly tell everyone about that!

Some no-mark from Kenya. At least he didn't ride into the commissaire that time.

  • Time for another question? I know that the Martin van Geneugden question hasn't been answered yet, but until FJS turns up, what do Chris Boardman, Stéphane Heulot, Rolf Sørensen and Bernard Hinault have in common?

That's easy, they've all abandoned the Tour whilst in yellow.

OK, time to give the answer I guess:

They all won a stage in which another rider died through a crash: Riviere, Kivilev, Casartelli, Weylandt

Cor blimey. That's not one you'd want on the Palmares, is it?

Edit: sorry, meant to say that's a great question though
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Correct Stevic of Serbia and 'B' World Champs - staged for nations with developing competitive cycling. First edition was 1997 though and was held every two years - none held in 2005 and 2007 is the last to date. Murilo Fischer won the RR title in 2003 and in the 2007 TT Champs Froome, racing for Kenya, came 2nd to Ma Haijun of China.

He did, but not due to the injuries he received in the crash.
