Daniel, the Cyclus press will work, but you just need to put the 2 conical 'drifts' on upside down so the wide flat side is in the cups... The 'steps' on the cones don't fit in the cups. And yes, you're correct about which ones are the cups.

It's a very useful press to have - I've probably used mine a dozen or so times on my own bikes, and it's earned me a few pints for fitting headsets for friends. If you get a few big washers, you can use if for BBs etc, but used in that way, it's probably only a bit more reliable than the DIY type.

You won't need that cup remover for this job - and I'm not sure that would be the best tool to use on a carbon frame, but I have one and it's great for getting standard cups out of alloy or steel frames.

No.11 in your pic is the bolt for the shark's tooth chain catcher, and No.12 seems to be a spare bottle cage bolt.

PB - sorry to be a dunce, but from my beautiful artistic masterpiece below, would it be correct that 1 & 2 are the headset cups, and should fit with 15 & 16 which are the bearing races?

I don't think I have that many bits in my plastic bag. Can anyone tell from this terrible photo?

Thanks, I couldn't see any bearings in there when I was looking yesterday but I didn't open the bag for fear of losing something and I didn't really know what I was looking for. I've dropped the frame off at my brother's place now, but will have another look at the weekend when I'm there.

Is this the right type/size of pipe to use to fit the crown race?

Those two gold coloured parts are the cartridge bearings. Looks correct to me.

Good idea. Anybody that wants to should come to mine and I will show them what to do. I have a few beers, but people are welcome to bring more and there is a pub 6 doors up the road.
I will of course need a frame to demonstrate on so you'll all have to chip in and buy me a frame. Should still be cheaper than getting an LBS to do it and I get a frame. Probably a 58cm, I'll even accept a Pro as the SLs have all gone.

Erm why arent you peeps doing this work yourself?

Because I want it done right! IME bike maintenance and especially building up an entire frame looks straight forward, but there's no many caveats, you need this in this way, or turned that way, or with an end bit, without an end bit, it'll work, just not properly, etc etc. I'd rather have a bike I'm going to have confidence in and will be 'as new'.

Despite me thinking it would be a good plan to keep my Trek 2.1 frame of course my wife is wanting me to sell it to offset the cost.

Do you reckon a Trek Madone 2.1 2013 52cm frame - ridden ~500miles would sell on ebay, and if so how much I should put it on for?

@DanielB - AW Cycles fitted a headset to my new MTB frame the other week for a whole £8, while I waited....might be a bit more to have the crown race fitted as well.

Very happy with this frame, bought from westbrookcycles but I did not have the forward thinking to ask them to press in some Campagnolo BB shells for me. What BB shells would I need to buy so that I could fit Campagnolo record 11 speed

I am thinking these but not sure http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/compon ... b30-p12982

Yeah, that looks like the one I got Westbrook to send me. Having just bought a complete Chorus groupset, however, I think I've ended up with two. I haven't unpacked it yet, but if I do have a spare, I'll do you a good deal on it. Mind you, I'm slightly disappointed that you will out-pose me with your Record version :(

Well, I had a look and although both boxes say the exact same about sizing, the cups look different. I suspect the Westbrook ones they sent me are just an older design. I'll have a chat with my LBS and see which are the most suitable and get back to you with any worthwhile info. I'm sure the ones you link to are right, though.

Interesting - not only do I have a wrong sized bearing, I am also missing the crown race :(

Is the image on the CD the exact headset provided, because I haven't got a rubber O-ring or seal either :?

Edit - clearly not the headset provided, as the image is of a tapered headset - doh!

Hi Jonny, many thanks for your reply. If you can provide any more info that would be great, BB standards appear to be a bit confusing at the moment and I just want to make sure I get the right ones :D Nothing wrong with Chorus , I have not ordered my Records yet and may opt for the Chorus and get better wheels yet...

So does that mean that you do have all the requisite parts, and also that the pdf (Which I have yet to look at) is pretty useless as a source of reference for how the headset should go together?

No problem. I think the bottom line is you just need cups for BB86. I'm certain I have 2 sets, even though they look different, and you're welcome to whatever set I don't use, but if you're buying a full groupset you'll get the latest ones anyway.

I think the only difference between Chorus and Record/Super Record is weight rather than performance. If you did fancy pushing the boat out, though, Merlin are doing a deal on Athena EPS.

Mine was incredibly supportive, telling me I deserved it and that it was a great deal. Little did I know it was a trap and I foolishly then told her the real price of my groupset. There then followed a period of subtle guilt trippery. That'll teach me to be honest.

  • Back onto a headset questions !
The compression ring - I think this needs to be lightly pushed into place - using a mallet and the unique fitting tool - ie the piece of plastic pipe (32mm diameter) that I got from Wicks for £1.95.

Please can someone confirm this ?

By the way , I used the plastic pipe for the crown race - worked a treat once I had done a little sanding of the steerer tube close to the fork.

    Cheers

I just dropped it into place. Pressure from the cap compresses it

I've got the stainless steel ones on the SS and the Mandibles (could actually be Dave-os now I think about it) on my CR1. Great cages.

Edit; I've got Dave-Os. Apparently the Mandibles are more secure. Given how hard I have to pull to get a bottle out of a Dave-O I can only assume Mandible owners die of chronic dehydration.

I like the arundel cages they're very nice, but I'm on a budget so it''ll be cheaper option. I tend to prefer a plain matte black finish but then I'm probably being too fussy with it. I've crossed the elite ones of my list now :?
