That is one short stem you have on there!! Interestingly near enough every one of these I have seen, has had the white saddle and bar tape replaced with black, makes you wonder why giant didn't do this to start with.

I keep looking at mine wishing it has the old giant logo, that is the only thing that bothers me about mine. I just can't get on with the new one, maybe it's a grower but it is certainly taking its time!!

Yeah 70mm stem, switched it after a bike fit and its made a big difference. Im only short so I was too stretched out on the old stem.

And yes, I agree it looks much better with black bar tape and saddle!!
  • Just taken delivery of the new wet/winter steed, a 2016 Giant Defy Disc 1. Stock saddle swapped for a Fizik Aliante, tyres for Vredestein Xtreme Weather 28mm and Giant mudguards added.

    IMG_7117.jpg

The bike was chosen specifically to compliment the summer steed and enable future "better / best" wheels to be able to be shared between the two bikes.

Are those Giant mudguards the narrow plastic type or the aluminium speedshield, where is the front section of the front mudguard, have you removed it?

The latest Giant mudguards apparently; wider than the Giant aluminium ones that were on my Old Aluxx Defy. These have lots of spare clearance, probably for even as much as 35mm cross tyres. The LBS popped them on for me before I picked the bike up. Apparently the front mudguard no longer has (or needs?) the front section. I was dubious, but that's what the LBS said. They also quickly passed off the gaping great gaps where the brake calipers usually fit and couldn't provide a credible answer when asked whether Giant did a Disc brake specific set of guards. Regardless, I'll take the much greater clearance and better look than the old shiny aluminium guards. Will be interesting to see how they perform once the weather turns.

I assume that they are these, as they are a new addition for 2016
    http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/gear/product/giant.speedshield.defy.avail.aluxx.fender/592/73459/

They look to have been designed for bikes that use caliper brakes, like the original narrow Defy specific mudguards, because they have the same style narrow metal bracket that fits under the brake caliper.

I don't understand why Giant haven't provided a proper set of full mudguards, like the SKS Bluemels 35 or SKS Longboards, for use with the Defy Disc bike. Don't know what your LBS is on about regarding the front guard not having or requiring a font section ahead of the fork. If the guards they have fitted are the ones in the link above, it clearly shows a front section.

How is the bike BTW is it noticeably heavier that the caliper brake Defy?

Yes, that's them, thanks. Taking another look, I would say the front part of the mudguard has been left off to give best clearance. With 28mm tyres, there is still room to go larger, perhaps even as far as 35mm cross tyres. However, it looks like trying to fit a mudguard in would either not fit at all, or leave minute remaining clearance. It certainly is very annoying that Giant have not yet made any specific mudguards for either last years Advanced or this years Advanced and Defy Disc's.

I can't say the new Defy Disc feels any heavier than the old one. Compared with the Advanced it certainly is, but it rolls and climbs a treat, I'm delighted with it. I have noticed slight disc rub when out of the saddle, on both bikes. However, I am 6' 2"/15st 6lb and whilst mildly irritating, it's more than compensated by the far superior braking (once the pads are worn in). I'm sure it will also be lessened by my ongoing weight loss and a better set of wheels and rotors in due course.

Re. the front mudguard, if your LBS removed the front section of the mudguard, that would suggest to me that the wider speedshield mudguards contact the inside edge of the fork legs.

With the release of the Defy Disc Aluxx bike, which features dedicated mudguard mounting points, I don't understand why Giant didn't take the opportunity to design the frame and fork with sufficient clearances for 25 - 35mm tyres AND full type mudguards.

    Thanks for your feedback BTW.

Lovely colour way, the blue and white look great. Are those carbon deep section wheels?

  • Thanks. The colours haven't come out very well in that pic. The white is pearlescent and the blue is a very deep looking metallic.

The wheels are just a carbon fairing over an aluminium rim. That suits me fine though, as I can't afford another set of wheels right now, so having an aluminium braking track was a must.... but so was having deep wheels!
They also make a lovely, loud noise when you freewheel.

Hoping to actually get out and ride it at some point this weekend.

  • Ha ha! I didn't know what you were on about at first, but now I see it... it's actual a Camelbak Podium in a Giant Airway Pro 1 carbon cage with a bit of Lucozade Sport in it, but it does look a bit funky!

nice wheels, also planning to upgrade mine, do you mind if i ask where did you buy your wheelset and which measurement of front/rear axle i should choose?

    Rear: 12x135mm & 12x142mm

I believe zipp send end caps to convert.

but the defy would be 5x100 front and 5x135mm rear.
also i would assume you want clincher/tubeless rather than tubular.

I would also recommned having a look/read/post to the handbuilt wheel thread. Some Novatech 771/772(convertable) with Pacenti SL25 rims and whatever spokes meet your wallet would not disappoint over the zipp, which i am sure are great, are quite pricey.

I got from Ubyk for £600. As said it's 5x100 front 5x135 rear. You get all these adapters in with the wheels.

Superb wheelset better than hand built sets I've had. Only trouble has been the tubeless tape on the rear. It's was split and been a pain in the backside tbh.

Worth £600 IMO. They are worth every penny and improved the bike in weight and ride. I'm running Schwalbe Pro Tubeless 25mm but may push up to a 28mm as the rims are so wide.

My first carbon bike and also first bike without 3 front sprockets.
Not set up properly yet as i need to copy the old defy settings and adjust for the lower stack height.
Very happy with it, blurry pic is only problem.

Interesting handlebar/STI set up you have there, if the bars are too low wouldn't you be better flipping the stem up and rotating the bars down?
