I'm still coming anyway mind! As long as there's something rideable somewhere in Wales. Rhyl, perhaps.

Yep, I'll still be there - although I won't be venturing up a mountain if it looks a little chilly!!

So far Coed-y-Brenin is clear of snow, so that might be a plan for Saturday, and let's hope Antur Stiniog clears for the Sunday.

I'm still in assuming someone (that's you Richie taxi) has the foresight to actually ring the hostel on friday to check the pass is clear before we set off - just for the hard of thinking - that doesn't mean when we're already stuck in the snow drift. I've been looking forward to this for weeks and laying down fat reserves for just such an emergency. See y'all soon.

    Not sounding good for snowdon.. from the met office site;

Latest: 31/03/2013 14:07 A combination of conditions exist at all levels, including frozen snow, deep snow and soft snow as well as compacted snow on main paths combine to make very difficult conditions underfoot. Crampons and ice axe essential. Risk of avalanches will remain on all slope aspects particularly on higher ground. Frozen snow above 350 metres. Areas of hard snow above 400 metres.

    Description Special equipment/advice

    Frozen snow.

    Arctic or extremely wintry conditions.
Slopes covered in hard frozen snow and ice.
    Major paths could be obscured.
Steep sections of paths could be extremely treacherous and the possibility of a slip or fall is extremely high.
Cornices (overhanging snow) can form on cliff edges.
Ice axe, crampons and full mountaineering equipment is essential.
Paths become very dangerous without such specialist equipment, especially when descending.
In poor visibility or whiteout conditions navigation skills and techniques will be required.

I think its fair to say it'd be suicidal even attempting snowdon, a re-think is needed for sure. Coed y Brenin should be clear, what about penmachno or are there re any other centres/rides people had in mind as a back up?

Sky news has folks driving past the front door of the Y H A in brilliant sunshine we're still a load of melting away. so why don't we panic when we actually get there

Well lets see what the next few days bring although im not feeling confident as predicted temps of minus 5 for most of the week on the upper levels means that no matter what goes on at lower levels, the snow/ice up there aint gona shift.

I hope it does go though, was really looking forward to it.

Yeah, cause, like, you know, contingency plans are dumb.

I thought contingency was any open trail centre? Or are we taking road bikes too?

Just for a laugh I rang Snowdon railway. Apparently its ok on llanberis path upto about 400m, then its covered.
Temp at 400m was -5, above that they couldnt say what it was with windchill as it was gusting over 100mph.
I said i'd ring again on Friday to check. She nearly wet herself when I mentioned we were wanting to ride it.

If nothing else, could be an interesting walk to see the huge snow pile!

I think you're all going to be killed and we're going to have to organise a crudcatcher rescue party. There's a bunch you never want to rely on...

I think I'd be tempted to make the time to go and have a look at Snowdon, maybe go for a walk but who thinks we'll be riding it?

Emailed Antur Stiniog, they'll be doing a full course check tomorrow and making the call for the weekend, they're obviously not ruling it out that they'll be running.

I'd be up for a walk up Snowdon, or at least to 400m, then I'll fark off to the pub!

Just been out on the road bike for the first time in ages, to get the legs spinning and lungs back in action. Didn't do too bad, 10.5 miles in less than an hour. There's some damn steep hills round here. I think I've found a nice little loop to improve on.

Looking forward to the weekend now :D

She did say that above 400m, unless you have crampons etc, and are experienced walkers (sure we all qualify on that point :) ) that above there was to be avoided..

Lets see what the next couple of days brings.. id be up for a walk up whatever bit of it we could.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, most of the snow's melted and I was out for a ride in a t-shirt on sunday. Y'all should come visit.

True, I've been walking for at least 25 years! I don;t have any, y'know boots or anything though. All my 'outdoorsy' gear is bike specific. Could I climb up Snowdon in Spesh Defrosters? Can you get SPD crampons?

Coed-y-Brenin on Sat, Stiniog on Sunday sounds good to me :D

Right, after some discussions with Richie63, we've taken an excutive decision and - as we won't be going up Snowdon - have moved accommodation.

We're now staying in the Glan Aber Hotel Bunk House in Betws y Coed. We have 6 places booked in the bunk house and 1 booked in the hotel.

This place has secure bike storage (apparently a locked cellar - perhaps that will come in useful late on Saturday night?)

The average cost, including breakfast, will be £54 each. After losing 10% of the HYA booking (tight gits), that means you all owe me £12 (cash-in-hand when we meet on Friday will be fine, I've paid for it). All of us non-YHA members were going to have to pay another £3/night upon arrival anyway, so that's not too much more.

Decision on who gets the posh, hotel, room will be taken following a naked mud wrestle on the banks of the river Llugwy .

This means were much closer to Coed y Brenin, Penmachno and Antur Stiniog now, so we can save ourselves some mileage.

In addition we're now also in the same town as the other 6 splitters that were too good for a YHA , so we can all have a laugh and go out for a meal / drink together on the Saturday night.

As soon as I receive an e-mailed confirmation of our booking, I'll send everyone a PM with the booking ref so that we can all check-in when we arrive.

Thats good news all round I reckon, choices for food and beers, a secure bike lock up and closer to the riding, win all the way!

thought you weren't mentioning that.... :)
