To clarify, I'm not a Lance fanboy, just trying to put over a different view.
Jan gets a certain ammount of respect on forum, alot of guys like him. Tyler has even got some positive comments since he 'fessed up. Iain loves Basso (as does my Missus).
What's the difference? They were all part of systemic doping programmes ??
One won more than rest, and earned more cash.0 -
He is a scumbag is why. That article from a resident I Austin said it best.0

Mainly because he's a) always come across as human - struggles with weight, partying, etc b) he comes across OK in interviews and he doesn't speak much English, so a) counts for more.
He's also c) not gone out of his way to f*ck others and didn't do the whole blacklist journos bull etc etc and of course d) he didn't win much.
But you're right. He gets an easy ride from us.
Lance gets it particularly rough because he comes across so inpenetrable and in control. I don't think Ulrich was particularly political in the way Lance was either.
Ulrich's time will come. They're still investigating him.
Difference is it's not English language and he won a lot less, so it will count for a lot less, we've by now heard it all before, and he's broadly less well known.0 -
Here's one, if Lance was Spanish (Bertie), would this topic exist ??0

I don't disagree that in the whole this is a good thing.
But some of the hatred on here is a bit beyond the pale. Typical British attitude I suppose. UB next maybe........0 -

But some of the hatred on here is a bit beyond the pale. Typical British attitude I suppose. UB next maybe........The report claimed that Armstrong sent the wife of his former team-mate Levi Leipheimer, Odessa Gunn, threatening text messages after her husband testified before a federal grand jury about doping. “Shortly after my testimony,” he recalled, “I attended a dinner with Lance and sat next to him. Lance was very cold towards me and I figured he had learned of my testimony. Although he did not speak to me, Lance sent a text message to my wife Odessa that said, ‘Run, don’t walk’.
This was the first time in several years that Lance had communicated to Odessa and in context his message to her felt threatening.”
A similar incident occurred during the 2012 Tour de France, after Leipheimer had been interviewed by USADA. Leipheimer wrote in his affidavit: “Odessa received a text from Lance asking, ‘Are you in CA’ Both Odessa and I found this text to be very disturbing as she was indeed home alone at the time. The text made her feel very vulnerable and there was no legitimate reason for Lance to communicate with Odessa.”
He deserves nothing but disdain as an individual and as a sportsman.0 -

Half answered is own question in anycase.
He won a lot and earned a shed load of cash from cheating to win: Winwrong.
Add in the fact that he ran the system, behind the systematic doping
and the question becomes rhetorical.

The guy is a scumbag who tries to destroy people's lives and hides behind the fact he had Cancer. He deserves everything he has coming to him and more. When a true genius appears in this world, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him. - Jonathan Swift0 -

I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you meant, if it had been Spanish Armstrong busted , would we have a long thread about it, not whether SADA* would have acted.

The guy is a scumbag who tries to destroy people's lives ......
I thought he was a doper and the leader of a drug gang and a bike racer and running a charitable organisation and being a superstar and having wives and kids and being busy destroying cycling. Just exactly when did he become this "life destroyer"? Date please.
More to the point, when did he find the time? I'm retired and can't find enough hours in the day to do what I'd like. Do you think he's on some drug that allows him to go without sleep? Because I'm thinking that just destroying a sport would take up most of your days. At least for most people. Not to mention killing off the rest of the world as an after thought. Scumbag? It would appear so. Destroyer of lives? Well, maybe so or at least lots of people on this site, and others, have had their lives disrupted, at the very least, because of their fasination / obsession with a bike rider. Try to move on with your lives. I know it's hard to break away from celebrity worship but do it for the sake of your family and friends. They are much more important than someone who won some bike races.0 -

F*ck off..............just ask Betsy Andreu or Greg Lemond................send people distrubing texts messages.
Dennis you're a Menace.0 -
Jesus dennisn your ignorance knows no bounds.
Life destroyer of his former masseuse who he crushed with lawsuits after she dared speak out? The upcoming pros who couldn't compete unless they were on drugs, the ones he co-erced and forced into drug taking just to be on his team.
Then his charity? All the people he insulted who died as they didn't have the 'will' to survive or didn't 'want' to beat cancer enough.
As supporters I'm pretty sure everyone appreciated that cheating and getting caught is all part of the drama of the (or any) sport, and I think people know that dopers will come and go, and yes, cycling is best at facing its demons and doing its best to deal with them - but this guy systematically took out the competition or any whistleblowers with threats, money and lawsuits while bribing officials to cover up failed tests.
Not really your 'run of the mill, its all a level playing field anyway, he was the best rider anyway' kind of cheat.
A proper world class cunt of a cheat0 -
Think you're both being a little dramatic.
"Crushed" is a bit strong.
It's just cycling, and it's just a job.0 -
There's probably a bit more to that when you're starting to get threatened by your former employer. Don't try to be cool and aloof0

Look, it's not good.
Intimidating people, trying to screw them out of the peloton, sure I get that.
But listen to Bassons and O'Reilly.
They don't sound crushed.
Glad that period in their life is over? Probably. O'Reilly for sure. Bassons seems OK with it now.
People have lives beyond their jobs.
The most f*cked up by it all seem to be the people who were doing the drugs.

C'mon, is it creepy or is it not? Some of you guys seem incapable of answering a simple question.
And yes. I'm an alien. Someone once said that there are no stupid questions but your space alien one proves the theory of "exception to every rule".
Let's have an answer or two. All of you claim to know all there is to know on this LA subject so how about it. Doesn't anyone find all this web name calling just a little bit creepy? That's an easy enough question, right? :?0 -

It was interesting to hear Emma O'Reilly recount the story of her LA confidential testimony to David Walsh.
The Times were pretty insistent that she was put up in a safe house, for the period. They thought it necessary.
At the time, it must have felt pretty threatening."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Not saying it wasn't. You can see what I mean. Wouldn't say either life is 'ruined'.
Career perhaps.0 -
In the end it comes down to the hubris of the man. To stand up and say
“To all the cynics, I'm sorry for you, ... I'm sorry you can't believe in miracles. This is a great sporting event and hard work wins it.”
when he knows he has just got to Paris on a pill, can't help but make most of us angry. All the rest of his myth building based on a pack of lies just sticks in the throat and you can't help but dislike him. That is even before you get onto the sociopathic behaviour described voluminously.
In general people are naturally trusting, conmen rely on this fact, but if you abuse that trust and get found out then God help you. I have no sympathy for him. He is reaping what he sowed.0 -

I agree that O'Reilly's life isn't ruined. But listening to her speak about her boyfriends MS getting progressively worse because of the emotional stress, you'd have to say her life has been severely affected.0 -

I think you're understating it a bit there.
Don't forget a rider will have spent their formative years working towards the goal of becoming a pro. To be one of the 1% (or whatever) who make it, then have it taken away must be traumatic.
You have some experience of working in a 'bullying' environment - easier to walk away from a job you don't like than one you've dreamed off you're whole life.
That's not to say they're not going to recover.
I mean, look at Lance - he had cancer then won the Tour 7 times.
