    Just to clear this one up - 'riders name - OP' indicates a rider of the Oakley Pedalers (OP) - a friendly group of cyclists from near Basingstoke who've all added the OP to their name on Strava. It has nothing to do with the segment creation.

    In fact they are so friendly that they flag any KOMs you get and then block you on Strava :lol:

    Edit: Got some of my KOMs back after raising a support ticket. :D

    Its annoying because the KOM was obviously sitting at the back of a fast group with a HR of 126!
  • I've only just a got a Garmin and got onto the Strava thing, but the one thing that I look at is people's HR's and if it's 120 odd or so, it's a bit of a joke and obvious someone's drafting.

    I train a lot on HR and I hope it's a feature people look at when I get a KOM, as to know they are genuine efforts. Although the sections local to me are now being canned by local elite and pro riders, but fair do's to them - just incentive for the mere mortals like me to train harder!
  • anyone know if the kudos count towards anything or are they more along the lines of a "like" on facebook or whatever?

    As Strava unlike Endomondo is still failing to support ANT+ (they need to address this ), then I dont have HR recorded on my Strava road rides... but I can assure you that my KOMS are genuinely earnt.. even the one I did racing... how do I know..? I set it when I had been dropped and was chasing back on like a mad feck.

    Does anybody know what happens when a segment is flagged? It is automatically removed, in which case is it prudent to message the rider first? Or do Strava bods assess it before taking any action?

    Also, when uploading an exported file from my 310xt, the heart rate doesn't seem to transfer, whereas when importing the same file into other apps such as Sportstracker, the heart rate does upload? Any suggestions?

    There is a certain amount of kudos around posting fast times with plenty of power without having a tailwind.

    Uploading a tcx file, it will add the miles to your totals.

    Why would anyone just Strava a segment in isolation? I noticed this few times with KOMs.

    A Hill Climb event on the actual hill.
    They're secretive, so only upload the parts of files that get KOM's there are quite a few people who do this - normally just with rides, but can see the ultra secretive doing it. There's a rider near me who has uploaded lots, but then sets everything to private unless they have a KOM - normally got by drafting a bus.

    When segments are flagged they're automatically removed, the user can then get the chance to appeal. For a gratuitous one I would never bother letting the user know.

    For most of the segments around me you either need a tailwind, or a draft off a group or a Bus, even the climbs you're not going to realistically get close unless the wind is right. It's simply the reality of popular areas with competitive people. I can get do 6w/kg for 5 minutes, but there's climbs around me that that won't get me in the top 10 doing that solo without a raging tailwind.

    The reality is most segments are KOM with a tailwind. I've got a KOM which was about 3 miles at 30mph average, I can't do that with a headwind.... A good time trialist on a TT bike would be pushing for that on a full on TT bike in a headwind.

    There are some segments where the KOM is significantly faster that anyone else. For example:

    The power of 1000+ watts for 3 1/2 minutes makes me suspicious but then, the KOM may have recently lost a lot of weight and not updated his profile? Secondly, he could have got lucky with a bus/coach/lorry. This segment would normally be directly downwind.

    Personally 25mph+ is achievable (now I know the segement is there), but 32? Maybe either jibberjim or MeridaBen would eat that for breakfast?

    Making meself confussed now..
    I meant to say that the Strava mobile app does not directly support ANT+ as does Endomondo - hence my thinking that Strava are behind the game here.
    If I am using my Garmin on the trainer at home, then yes all ANT+ data is recorded and then uploaded to Strava

    The cadence data makes that one look very suspicious. Why would his cadence data disappear for a lot of the ride if he wasn't in a car?

    Drafting a bus is very, very easy on such a segment - This one http://app.strava.com/rides/21949662#392064864 (now only 2nd) was drafting a bus, you can see a very steady speed just at the speed limit and a very gradual accelleration (for a bike) if you have power that very up and down power data that you can see of mine is typical. 346 for 2 minutes is easy - when fit that's not much more than my 1 hour power (about my 20minute power at the moment) so it was easy to draft the bus. But I was faster than the olympic road race guys when they were going down there.

    The leader on the segment is also probably legit, again with slow accelleration and then holds a very steady speed - I suspect the bus was going a little faster but otherwise much the same. Sitting 20-30m behind the bus is completely safe but enough of a draft to make it easy - you don't need to be doing "breaking away's" inches from the bumper at 60kph - maybe at 80 or 90...

    Don't worry, you've still got some high placings on my regular rides thanks to your data from the Ras! Maryka seems to have a load of QoMs here too. Bloody Londoners coming up here nicking our segments!!

    PR'd effortlessly on the hills I was targeting and came close on the others (Piddlington hill was taken at a slow pace as its pretty much immediately before Brill Hill.)

    Its amazing what loosing 6kg can do for you!
