since its was flat I decided to get into a fast group for most of it and not worry too much about pacing and I'm pretty happy with 18.2mph moving average over 90 miles.
I went solo after 70 miles... http://app.strava.com/rides/21359075#382179110 and got second place on this (not really bothered it was downhill with a probable tailwind)
Great weather for it, was tempted to partake but sun, beer and BBQ quashed any temptation I had
Good riding performance on the sportive btw0 -
Matty, I was being tongue in cheek fella
Created a new segment near me. I only have 2 ways to get back to my house, adding this in, gives me a bit more emphasis at the end, it's just a little bump. I was surprised to see I ended up KOM on it, nice surprise though: http://app.strava.com/segments/23362330 -
This was Cycling Weekly's segment of the week a couple of weeks ago: 1000 feet in 1.6 miles @11.7% ave, max 30%+
http://app.strava.com/rides/21263911#380368261
glad I 'don't have to' ride it again until the inevitable 'Uh oh!', which I've probably just sped up by posting it here0 -

I thought you were, but on forums it's hard to tell
Seems you are very good at going up hill.... Your climbing times are fast; I on the other hand am far too big to be a good climber, although I'm working on climbing (and loosing a bit of weight to help the cause), round Cambridge there aren't too many climbs to practice on0 -
I am not good at going uphill, but I am OK at getting some quick burst of power down. I struggle on the longer climbs or bigger gradients which require a sustained effort, as I have to heave 81Kg/180lbs uphill, I generally just grind my way up even with a 34-27. The biggest thing that has helped me has been getting into TTing and learning to pace better and also doing some lower cadence work.
Like you I am hoping to lose weight for next year. Somewhere between 70-75Kg hopefully, but it's hard with kids.0 -
There are hardly any hills in Cambridge that require you to be a traditional climber. Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara are both 90kg+ or thereabouts and can do the Cauberg or the Muur fast enough. The longest hill in Cambridge I think its the Six Mile Bottom Climb http://app.strava.com/segments/717932, it isn't very steep but it goes on for 3 miles or so. Huntington Road Climb is pretty good too http://app.strava.com/segments/684377x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

I doubt Tom or Fabian have ever been over 14 stone in their lives. :?0 -
Just joined
The thing I get out of Strava is the routes - you pick a few segments then connect them together and go out for a ride. For me it's not after chasing KOMs (can't!) but more about saying 'I'm not as bad as I thought I was on that ride'. I am in stone cold last for a couple of segments, and that's cool, I know I can better myself at some point!
I'm not in a cycling club, I think some of the clubs make it a little to 'clicky' - so this kind of encouragement is just what I need.0 -

I think a big chunk of the fens are actually at or slightly below sea level from when they were drained.
At school I ran cross country, remember one race we were checking the course out and there was a slight hill. No one could believe we were expected to run up it! We didn't do very well!
Not many of those places are 495 feet below sea level though like one of the climbs above!
The climb in the link in the quote above has a high spot of over 700 feet which is clever as the highest point in Lincolnshire is Wolds Top at 551 feet0 -

It's back
Does anyone think the KOM on the following segment looks like it was set with motorized assistance/bad GPS/Garmin data etc?

Nah, seems legit. But likely a tailwind, draughting a bus/lorry effort. All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

I'm doing this tomorrow (it'll take me approx 50 miles to ride to it):
http://app.strava.com/segments/615848
Chances of getting KOM? Nil.
Chances of having a massive anurism and/or putting my foot down? Quite high.
I've also got to cross the deadly A9 so I might not even make the climb.
Wish me luck...0 -

That looks like fun!0 -
Got my first KOM the other day! Really buzzing after I got it as I only bought my bike about 3 weeks ago. Admittedly it was a 1.5mile sprint with slight downhill but I don't care, I'll work on getting some 'mountains' soon.

Peter Hawkins, who has the annoying habit of taking all the KOMs round my way, is in the breakaway group on the ToB today. ITV4 now.

dw300 wrote:When will it be my turn to crank out 350W at 150bpm for 4.5 hrs ?
When you spend it drafting loads! Strava's power calc assumes you were solo - even in the 5man break he was getting a lot of rest - the dead give away is the way his power drops as they hit the climbs, which would be a very silly thing to do if you were trying to pace a break. Look at Tom Moses in the bunch all day 349 watts by Strava, but Chris Opie's actual watts was just 207, a much more realistic number for being in the bunch.
Shame he doesn't have real power today though - he often does - he beat me up Tabayesco on depressingly few watts (310 vs 343 for me)Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0 -
Is there a way of telling what KOM's an athlete has in total?0

Yeh, I know that drafting will get you an artificial Strava power .. I don't know why I asked that, although even drafting I'd be about 150 short of that!

I checked on the only strava near me that the riders went over yesterday (short hill 6%)- and hawkins......missed kom by .4mph - still impressive though I did it at an av of 15.3mph and he went over in 22.4 into a headwind- impressive. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
