Swinley weekend with a couple of mates - did the red and blue with the MOD land stuff on Saturday and the red and blue today - my mates had never been so were keen to ride it a bit - good riding going on and some good improvements from them in their riding.

Sessioned Lee Quarry today. Loads of fun, I only decided to go at the last minute.
  • The Gisburn "8".

Fell off the wooden boards into the swamp. Fell off on Hully Gully. Went over the bars into a massive puddle. Just couldn't stay on my bike today. I wasn't the only one though - everything was wet and slippy.

we only got to ride 2 trails, one blue and 1 red, both were superb. the blue was amazing fun and flowed perfectly from top to bottom, the uplift is fast (we got in 7 runs in under 4 hours)

I was going to head up mid week to Gisburn. I've only been once before but I thought it was pretty weatherproof. Saying that I did fall off the rocks into the swamp, but only because someone had stopped to admire the view and I had nowhere to go.
  • First visit to Cannock on Saturday. Thought it seemed a bit short. Checked map and it appears I went the wrong way :p after joining the monkey trail went down devils staircase and the trail markers said right.. looking at a map it appears you are meant to go over the bridge rather than right and slog back up hill?

I presume weirwolf drop has been tamed or something because I didn't go over anything remotely intimidating.

Also see why the place is legendary for its braking bumps.. only at the furthest out points after the wimps had bailed out did it get remotely sensible.

I think I know what you mean. You crossed the railway and road, did some switchback climbs, then rode a short section and came out over rocks, onto a gravelly fireroad? Then you should go straight on, over the wooden bridge and ride the rest (another 5-6 miles I think) of the Monkey, but it sounds like you just rode straight back to the road/railway and rejoined follow the dog. You missed out all the good stuff!

As for the werewolf drop, it's not as 'gnarly' as has been made out on here, it's just a bit fiddly. There is now a chicken run so you might have ridden around it without noticing.

Weirdly I can't really remember. Devils staircase is a steepish section of tight switchbacks with a sheep stile at the bottom immediately coming on to a road running left - right and a large bridge directly in front of you. The map says I should have gone straight over.. oops! http://i1.minus.com/ibfxhTlPer6MFU.png back in two weeks to revisit it!

Maybe I did chicken run the drop without seeing it. The only ones I can remember were near the end, a series of 3 before you got to the rollers section

Ah right, in that case you didn't even get onto the monkey!

The devils staircase bit is part of the link section between FTD and the Monkey. You should go over road and railway on the big new bike bridge, and then ride the Monkey trail.

I know the 3 drops you're talking about. A short distance (1/3 of a mile maybe) before those there's a section in the trees, that's where the Werewolf drop is. You take a sharp left turn, followed almost immediately by a sharp right turn off a drop in between two trees into a very short 'run off' area, which means you have to be turning as you're landing. If you don't take the sharp left then you end up on the chicken run.

Eww, bet you were a bit smelly when you'd climbed out - it's minging in there.
  • Rode the C2C route from a689 bridge to near wingate. Then back down to thorpe thewles then back to the car.

Had my first off on the way back down a steep gravel bank going sideways with the rear brake on then totally lost it. Canny gravel rash and muchos stinging.

Gisburn, full red plus the Hope Line and Hully Gully. What a great place it is, I hit a couple of bits I bailed on last time so was really happy. Chatted to three lads who'd ridden there from Long Preston Station on dirt jump bikes to ride the Hope Line (no helmets, but their choice I guess). Gave a tube to a group of 6 who didn't have one between them and met some terrible parents (or grandparents)- they were stopped on the start of Swoopy - the woman on a shopper bike, they told me to, "be careful, there are two ten year old girls ahead". I said are you sure this is right for them, it has some difficult sections, to which I was told, "don't worry, we'll pick up the pieces". I caught the girls who had dismounted to bypass a tiny rock in the trail, before it even becomes Swoopy. I know trail gradings can be a bit off at time but there are some steep rocky bits in there that these girls definitely would have had to walk, I'd not want to see them get hit by a faster rider than me, too.

Today i rode 3 laps of the commonwealth mtb course. It's a very well laid out track with some great features that will make for interesting racing and worth while spectating. There's some brilliant flicky berm sections, jumps, drop offs both doable and crazy, rock gardens and some steep climbs. There's even a dual slalom section with big tight berms and jumps.

All in all a great couple of hours spent and jusst 3/4 of an hour drive from home.

The Blue Pig in Hebden Bridge on a skills course, along with some other bits. Really nice but difficult trails.

Rode Kirroughtree Red today, good crack, first time in a long while I've ridden a trail centre by myself, but I was in the area for the weekend so it seemed rude not to, lol!

Slightly late, it was yesterday, but I had a go at the Whinlatter blue trail. First time I've ridden properly off road and first time on a trail.

Completely alien experience, not used to having the bike move around that much and felt somewhat out of my depth. Most of the way round I looked like this

Second time around was much better, though I still need to get to trust the tyres and lean the bike more. Really enjoyed it overall though :D

May pop up to Newcastleton tommorrow and have a go there :)

    Llandegla blue.
Really nice ride. The weather was good and the views from the top were great.
Had to rush back as my MiL was looking after the children. Definitely going to bring the bikes up more often now I know how close Llandegla is and will give the red route a go next time.

I went out locally on the road bike. Not a bad pootle, tried to ignore the garmin and just focus on keeping it comfortable and steady as I've been pushing myself fairly hard recently with work and a lot of tennis. Somehow ended up with a couple of PBs, I expect it's due to the relative lack of wind today. Must ride the mountain bike soon!

Exmoor's best bits today. Stunning trails but not a good idea to ride with 1x9 and a 34t chainring.
Well worth a return visit but with a granny ring fitted.
  • Bike Park Wales.

Melted Welly - blue trail then the 'Sixtapod' blue trail.

Both quality with Melted Welly tipping it for me, really nice 'flowy' sections with well placed jumps...just fells right from top to bottom... haven't even bothered the red / black sections yet...

    Me too :D

Gonna have another go (or two) later in the week, those rocky uppy bits are a pain in the arse/shins.

A lap of Gisburn's 8 route, in glorious sunshine. Got a bit muddy, nearly crashed down Hully Gully (luckily nobody saw that, lol) and happened to bump into a couple of guys from on here at the bottom of that section, so rode the rest of the route with them. Had a good afternoon. Now need to wash the bike again...
