our team at work have all been given a nike fuel band and have been told to do 3500 points per day. Took the bike out for an hour on the old railway line - and hour! At 4am. Puncture half way and fixed it. Downloaded the forking fuel band and it came up with - after an hour - 200points - in a spike corrsponding to when I was pumping the tyre. Blx fuel band does not work for cyclists.

I get HUGE points for biking. Not on the road, naff all. But an old railway line sounds pretty flat. Try riding some bumpy stuff.

Blast on the HT up the Rochdale Canal to Hollingworth Lake, had a bit of an explore and found a nice bridleway that showed promise then deteriorated into a (marked as such) footpath. I thought it headed to Piethorne.

Where abouts? I know the place like the back of my hand.

Bridleway starts from the corner sort of opposite The Fish on the far dam wall if that makes sense, you have to open a gate to access it. It then climbs up past a really nice house (looks like a former farm) then drops back on itself. The footpath was nice singletrack, I followed it but then there was a narrow wooden bridge, signs saying "footpath" and some dog walkers, so I wrote it off and went back.

If you know a decent off-road route from Hollingworth Lake to Piethorne I'd appreciate it. Looking on maps when I got home I think if you go along the back of the campsite (where the play area and ice cream van are) then instead of following the lakeside path go straight on that is the general direction. There seems to be a trail through the woods there.

I know there is loads of nice riding up there; I just don't seem to find it!

With the Winepress (Fish) on your left and lak to your right, ride up, past the camp site and under the motorway, past the farm and youll see a path to double back on yourself to the right, follow that up and over the hill and youll lose sight of the lake and motorway, there you will come to a gate with a signpost,
IIRC Left is to Windy Hill (Mast at J22), Straight on takes you to Piethorne, Right takes tou towards Milnrow near the Slip Inn I think,
I generally hit that signpost from Piethorne end,
Will be having a day of mooching and exploring (getting lost, walking, carrying and probably falling off mid curse) probably next month now if you want a heads up.

Surely that should read "Took the bike out for an hour on the old railway line - and hour. At 4am!" ?

had my first crash/off going for it as quick as I could sharp turn to avoid a giant patch of stinging nettle front wheel slipped and I slid off going round the corner. luckily I avoid the nettles.

all is fine was wearing fingerless gloves and stuff. few scuffs and scrathes on frame minor cut on 2 knuckles nothing major

Been riding Manchester's new inner city trail at Clayton vale. The way marking has been very poor but today I saw some progress being made in the way of chunky marker posts. Seems to be some opposition to the trail being built and the original markers were all ripped out.

Yesterday evening... checking the map as I'm not sure where I am and I can't see any landmarks. In the end we did 50k and got home after dark... it was a great ride, and some of the trails were new to me.

Couldn't make it for a ride with Graham K yesterday but the directions from Hollingworth lake to Piethorne were spot on, cheers. I managed the full ride in my 36 tooth chainring which made me feel I'm getting fitter.

I came off on the cobbled steps above the reservoir at Piethorne, but at such an embarrassingly slow pace I just leaned against the fence! Nice trails though.

Being a local Hollingworth Laker - I have to say the natural trail routes are pretty great...I do like the "lake to lake" which I have done about 40 times now.
Can be a hard slog up on the moors when it's boggy but hey that's all part of the fun.

Went over that way today, from home through Tandle Hills, High Crompton to Newhey (Mossgate Road) then went round the back of the Slip Inn (Water Lane) up towards Rough Farm and by the side of Ogden Resevoir, followed the track towards Rakewood then shot over the motorway heading towrds Whitaker Golf, down the A58 and around the lake then Wildhouse Lane and a left at the Gallows towards and past Tunshill and followed the track and it brought me back to Water Lane, through Kingsway Industrial and round the back of Asda to the Fairview and home,
28 in all with some decent climbing, well happy with it.

28 miles? Nice, I only did 30km (Rule 24), I only ended up near Ogden (not actually Pierthorne Reservoir, I checked which was which later), as I needed to get home and a puncture had slowed me up. Now I've been up there I've clocked the other routes so I'll have a bit more of an explore next time.

My mate planned a cracking route starting at leckhampton hill in Cheltenham. It was about 14 miles in total and what I thought would be a perfect shake down for my new wheels I had hand built at the LBS! They were great for the first 4 miles then all the no n drive side spokes lost tension leavings stranded and ruining what was up to that point some awesome single track riding!

Rode the Southdowns Way in a Day on Saturday. Winchester to Eastbourne. 12hrs 49 minutes. Blustery south westerly which helped at time and hindered at others. Well pleased with myself. GPS shows 97miles and 11400 of climbing.

Did you park up at the lake?
I either park up at the John Milne or seen folk park up past the Bulls Head at Ogden on the lane there, loads of mooching to be done around there though, will give you a shout in a couple of weeks when I next get over.

Llandegla Red then Blue. Nice blast out. Stayed out of the granny ring for the whole ride, which made me happy.
