Custom painted Torque, 05 boxxers fitted

Paint job just about done. Just needs time to cure. Decals and new damper shaft haven't arrived yet but the next picture should be of them fitted (if I can get a second crown race from Superstar - which I completely forgot about until tonight).0 -
Well, just waiting for a large syringe to measure 190ml of 5wt for each leg then they're ready to start testing! Oh, and the damn crown race I keep forgetting about...
I used the soap water technique to apply the decals but unfortunately, it took a few attempts to get the right leg decal straight and before I could remove it for one last jiggle, it stuck fast. I'm a bit gutted it's off! But I think once the wheel's in it will be less noticeable as the other decal won't be visible for comparison. Either way, I lvoe the white paint and carbon decals.0 -
Mmm skinny forks! They squelch a lot, and the spring rattles around inside since rebuilding which worries me. All in a noisy fork! But so very supple. Can't wait to see how these things fair.0 -
Looks good like that! Can't really help you with the forks a great deal as I don't know too much about the pre-'06 internals, but have you taken any preload spacers off the top that might cause the springs to be too short? They can become a little shorter over time. Also, are they seated properly in there, as well as the top-out bumper?
Also, you know the "xer" decal is supposed to be rotated 90deg clockwise, like the '10 onwards boxxers? Just looks a little funny like that.0 -

I'm pretty sure it all went back in the same order it came out, There is still a couple of preload spacers in there
as well as the top-out bumper?
The what? I suppose it must be in there as I ain't got any spare bits!

I'll rotate your decal 90deg clockwise in a minute... There's a crudism that doesn't get out enough anymore!0 -
Those old Boxxers are usually a bit noisy. Six years of hard riding will have loosened things up a lot. They do usually rattle and squelch a bit. New springs might help but the stanchions are probably a bit worn. Did you give the springs a good coating of grease?Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

No I didn't, I don't think I spotted that in the manual. I've just bunged in the oil. You think a thick grease on the outers of the spring would be a benefit? Would grease not mix up with the oil and potential alter the rebound rate?0
-
If you have put the spring and rebound damper in the same leg you have really messed up!
It shouldn't mix with the oil in the lowers which is only for splash lubrication anyway and not used for damping.
You need to grease the spring as its a steel spring rubbing against an aluminium stanchion, without any grease the spring will eat your stanchion!Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Two springs, one for each leg.
It's easy enough to pop a spring out and grease it up. I've a thick bearing grease - think it needs something more specific than this?0 -
RockmonkeySC wrote:If you have put the spring and rebound damper in the same leg you have really messed up!
But yeah, you need to give the springs a liberal coating of grease before you fit them, that could be your problem. I was going to say it earlier, but I didn't think it would have made them a great deal noiser. Worth doing just in case anyway.0 -
My mistake. My 2012 Boxxers and my Lyriks, Pikes, toras and domains all have just one spring. I didn't realise older Boxxers had two.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

So... bearing grease? Or something thicker?0

I just use normal Castrol lithium grease all over my bike (used it in my old totems), doesn't seem to do any harm.0

Apparently lithium can do funny stuff to fork seals, I think I read that on here recently...
The bike is looking ace, btw.0 -
Cheers MonkFinger,
I'll probably go to my local Autoshop and get a vat of cheap grease rather than use the premium bearing grease I have. I'll see what they say about it affecting rubber. Cheers0 -

170/200. I rode a Hanzz recently and was blown away by it - it was a spectacularly fun ride! So I'm trying to change a few things to see if I can liberate some potency in the Torque. If not, next year might be swap year. You ride with a lad that has a Hanz don't you? Have you ridden it? Got any thoughts between the two?0
-
Hmm.. Was wondering how the frame would feel with more travel up front, would slacken the head angle but not sure if it would ruin it.
Yeah, Squarepants has a Hanzz. Much of a muchness really, very similar bikes at the end of the day, we're both probably at the same skill level so fairly matched down the hill!
Haven't really ridden it as ita a tad too small for me.0 -
My first planned ride is at Wharncliffe in a few weeks - I'll report back how it handles0

That might just be the rfx model which looks to be a whole heap more burley. I don't know if it's adiffernt frame from the standard torque though (on my phone so can't investigate)0
-
The ones with 40's have adjustable rear trialngles so travel can be changed from 180-200mm (FRX version).
mine is the fixed 180mm travel version (FR).0 -
Been out to Wharncliffe now and twice around the red of Sherwood Pines on her, and I like it a lot! It handles fine with the longer travel, whips around berms and takes drops fantastically. I haven't found the balance point going off booters yet and I'm landing a little nose heavy but I think I prefer it to the shorter lyrik (for DHing anyway). However, the fork is quite agricultural and seems to spike if it takes a hard impact whilst rebounding. It's a bit clunky but I'll run it into the ground and then consider getting a revised 2010 model. I just need to decide now if I really like the feel of a DH bike and should get a frame more DH specific than the Torque; but that will be a 2013 project if at all.
---edit---
OK, got the bike to my local DH spot and a freakin' love it with a long travel fork on! I can nose it out of tabletops if the back end isn't going to clear, I can jump further than I ever have before with far more confidence. It's only a little change to geometry really but I do love it now!0 -
Thats good to know!
Been toying with the idea of putting mine back into DH mode, but its tucked away for now lol0 -
The Torque is coming to an end! As much as I've enjoyed riding it, it's not quite the frame I need. It isn't 'DH' enough and feels too much like a trail bike. The boxxers improved this greatly, but having spent the day with Descend Hamsterly, I've decided I want a more agile, pop n go frame. Hereis it's replacement. Cheers to all the input from everyone!0

This frame is now for sale. A classified will be put up when I've cleaned it, but if anyone is interested, drop me a PM.0

Custom Painted Canyon Torque frame for sale. The paint is chipped in places and the black anno beneath is visible. But the black masks the holes in the paint so from 6feet away it's barely visible. The shock has just had a full service and new shaft and is in perfect condition. This is the 170mm travel model. With Flows, Lyric RC2DH (170mm air), ti spring (steel spring is included in the sale), saint brakes and XTR cranks, it came in at 34lbs. As a DHers trail bike, it destroys everything. On this, I set the joint fastest segment on strava for the red to black DH over at Style Cop. The thing is mega fast and pedals very well. I've taken it on trail rides around Ladybower and it's been great. It's for sale because, since running it, I've become a more competent DHer and now have something specifically for that purpose.
£360 including the Superstar taper to 1/8th headset, DHX4 and steel spring, maxle rear axle (142x12), posted.
