Ahh, it was too easy this time ..... decided to try tracking calories and weighing food on MFP .... I dropped the weight like a stone since Jan .. in an almost linear fashion.

Was tempted to go further and weigh only 65kg and claim its great for riding .... but to be honest, I dont give a crap how fast I am ... where as I do give a grap how good I look at the beach, so its back to eating again and lifting big heavy weights and cycling to take its pride of place as a fitness tool

spoke too soon, having eaten almost nothing since that post and cycled a few times moderately i've gained about 5lbs from nowhere, the only difference from the loss was i've been working 20 hour days.

Darn. Back over 72 kg. The beast from the east has messed up with my weekly riding, together with some stressful weeks at work. I really need to put on more km, at a proper pace, and get back in track for my unrealistic yearly goals.

Slow for me this year - two main reasons.

Currently only riding 3.5ish hours per week.
    Eating chocolate semi regularly :-(

Once I have a current project out of the way, hoping to get back up to circa 6-8 hours per week, and also vastly reduce the chocolate consumption.

Power is coming back up to what it was last summer, so hoping to end the year stronger than I did last year too.

I wondered when you were going to turn up DB.

You best head over to Bender's thread thread 'cos he's about to go a bit silly by putting Orange laces on a pair of black Giro shoes. Worrying times.

Quite a while since I have been on here, due to a number of things.
Last year I started at 74.4kg IIRC, and by September or there abouts was down to 63ish, which was bloody brilliant, and great for hill climbs!

Nov and Dec I lost focus, ate cr@p and did not ride that much.
My current weight is identical to what it was at this time last year -but bare in mind I started this year 5kg lighter, you can see how little progress I have made in comparison to last year.

This year I am back on the bike, but have still been eating cr@p a plenty, but this week I found my willpower, and have refocussed.
The only bad thing I have eaten this week is 1 solitary winegum, that I was too polite to turn down.
I've also, as alluded to in a previous page, tried to cut out (How is that going ITB?) bread, and have so far seen no ill effects at all. Aiming to pick up a load of brown rice as well, and aim to bring in stull like bulgar wheat as well. Less chips, more broccolli!

This week and last have been full on with work, and by accident I ended up not having breakfast one day, and instead drunk loads of water, bit of coffee, and made it through to lunchtime.
Inadvertently I've kind of taken on the mantle of the chap (If you see this could you PM me or reply please - woud like to know if you do that every single day?) on here who uses the 16:8 plan - where you only eat during an 8 hour block of the day.
I have been lunching at 13:00, having dinner at about 17:30, and then a bowl of muesli and bran flakes at about 19:30, so actually more like 7 hours.

My issue if you will, aside from the scoffing chocolate (Wispas and chunky kitkats have been my downfall), had been eating 3 meals a day and then still needing that bowl of cereal mid evening - we eat dinner early due to my young daughter, and we like eating all together if we can.

I'm back on the turbo with avengeance, and will be restarting my Velodrome accreditation next month I think, so pretty motivated at the mo.
Also have Velo South to look forward to in September, and a local hill climb two weeks after - not sure what else I will ty and get in, see how things go.

Intrigued to see what my weigh in will be this weekend - hoping to have shifted 1kg, but we will see.....
If there is no update from me this weekend, you know it has not worked!

I've been using the 16:8 and it got me to my original target of 70kg (from78kg+). I 've relaxed a bit this year and don't stick to it rigidly. My weight wanders in the 70-71kg range, which is fine for a good BMI, but I still have belly fat.

My 50th b'day check up in Feb showed high cholesterol, so I need to look at what I'm eating rather than how much/when. Interestingly my BP was v. low - would have required intervention if any other indicators were bad.

I need to work on my fitness before the Dragon Gran Fondo in June. I don't want to be dragging this belly up them hills.

Ah it must be you then :-) May I ask how rigidly you stuck to it at the time?
7 days a week, 5 out of 7 for example?

8kg loss is good going, how long did that take?

Sorry to hear about the cholestrol and low bp, hope it's not too difficult to fix. I've certainly heard of weight training being 'prescribed' and working too.

Low bp is normal for me, and it's never stopped me being a blood donor.

The 8 kg was over the course of a year, but that included lots of weight gain on the way. I actually lost about 7kg between start of September and Christmas. I was taking a course of beta blockers that caused the weight to go back on over the summer.

I start eating late in the day - 12:00 is the earliest and 2:00pm is normal. I find it hard to resist evening snacks, so I ensure healthy snacks are available. Crisps and wine are failings, but it's easy to stop buying wine or just buy one mini bottle as a treat. We do have a stock of crisps for the kids lunchboxes, though. So they are a challenge to my willpower.

I find it easy to skip breakfast and I can usually distract myself with activities and a lunchtime run or ride before I start eating.

I also cheat on 16:8 by drinking white tea and coffee outside the 8 hr window. I have to have a system I can stick too long term, and black tea would not work! Its been shown that an over reliance on willpower does not work for making a long term change.

What is the true efficacy of missing breakfast?
You need to kick start the metabolism, the engine if you like, else the body slows up in the absence of energy intake.
I eat like a horse. I have stopped posting my weight on account of the fact that last years rise was obviously a blip.

Anyway, I have under active thyroid and very low BP. The only time it's normal is during cycling!

I'm pretty sure you can kick start the metabolism by exercising rather than eating. I upped my running to half marathons last year and on the same route at simiar times of day, my best times are achieved fasted. My worst time was the only time I took water with me (in a bladder/backpack).

I rarely eat in the day before I've done some actual activity - a one mile walk to town/work or return trip to the local shop. I just don't feel hungry, but then I do snack late, and caffeine probably inhibits my appetite as well.
  • I'm with mrfpb on this one. I always used to eat breakfast in the morning on the basis that it was the "most important meal of the day". however by mid morning i'd be hungry again and would then slip into eating throughout the day and evening.

I now find that if I refrain from breakfast and cycle to work I won't need to eat anything until lunchtime and I'm able to manage from then to dinnertime quite happily. My entirely un-scientific rationale was that eating breakfast used to kick start my appetite mechanism for the day. Holding off from breakfast helps to control that.

As for effectiveness, since July last year I've lost 63lbs (28.125kg) - Not all due to this one change but a recognition that non stop eating was killing me and I was obese not just a bit chunky!!

@TriggersBroom - cracking achievement there matey, do you have a final weight in mind, or seeing how it goes?

I'm going to persevere with this and see if it can work for me then.
Scales at the weekend showed I had lost 1.7kg, so a pretty good start!

I have found that if I do a hard turbo session or ride eerly doors, say 6am, I then follow this up with a further pint of water, and a protein drink thing, I am then generally not hungry, OR at least can manage that hunger (By drinking coffee and water) until lunchtime, so 13:00\14:00 etc.

Interesting point above -if I snack on anything mid morning, then that normally makes me more hungry, and then I have to eat more.

I think if I ran the 8 hour block from 08:00 - 16:00, there is no way I could go from then until bedtime without eating anything, but doing it in the morning seems very managable.

Curious to see if this is something that will work for me, either short or long term - never considered it before, and as I said, just kind of stumbled into it by accident due to a full on project at work.

According to this widget I'm doing a lot better than my peers. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-43697948
It's quite shocking that in my age range (45-54) only 22% arein the "healthy BMI" range. I know some super fit hulks will have high BMI, but still, it's quite shocking when you see the numbers.

One caveat is that when I went for my 50th birthday check up the nurse weighed me in all the winter clothes I walked in wearing (including shoes and full pockets) she misread the scales and, after I corrected her, wrote down a figure of 26.x without measuring my height (she was about 8cm short in her estimate). If all the measurements in this survey were done the same way, maybe the nation isn't so fat after all.

    ...I've lost 63lbs (28.125kg)...

    'KIn 'ell

I bet that cost you a fortune on clothes but you're sacing on bike frames, wheels, tyres, brake pads...
    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Me: Your BMI is lower than the average of 28.2 for a man in your age group (22.6).

For every 10 scholarly articles on not having breakfast there's 10 scholarly articles for having breakfast.

Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.

Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

The trick with breakfast is to have protein, then you should be good for some 4 hours. Eggs, sandwiches with pieces of smoked fish, chickpeas, oats - all good. I like eating a big tomato in between meals. They are amazing when they are well ripe and you start getting hungry ^ ^ Of course, if your breakfast is at 700 and lunch at 1400, that's a bit too long.

In my opinion 5-2 is a pretty good method to compensate for lack of knowledge/discipline, i will be sure t try it if i start spinning out of control. Humans evolved to withstand hunger a bit better than overabundance, but we need enough calories for training and recovery, so balance must be found via experimentation or outside knowledge.

    Of course.
    I couldn't move without coffee.
I wouldn't get out of bed knowing there was no coffee.
Life without coffee would be hell.

Long live coffee. You can stuff your bloody Ginseng, Rosehip and Tiffany's lilac flower petal odour, Green tea and special mix from Stowell's of Chelsea, ooo, don't ya know, China tea cup bollox.

And instant coffee is worse than a fixie. Don't get me started on bloody instant coffee.

Beetroot juice?!! If I got an ailment, I rub Beetroot on it, not drink the bloody stuff.

    Jojoba? Jesus wept...

This should go in rants, but I've never ever bought a decent tomato on a UK supermarket. Tesco? Sainsbury's? M&S? Waitrose? All crap. The Tesco imports may not be so bad, and British Jack Hawkins tomatos from Waitrose get a pass, but still.

I don't know WTF we import from Spain, but it sure ain't the same tomatos they keep for the locals.

That is so true. Even fruit and veg from corner shops and stands seem to be much better than supermarket food shaped objects. I try to ripen at home with mixed results.

Had a chuckle at Pinnos ode to the magical powder, still, it's an acquired taste.

@TriggersBroom - cracking achievement there matey, do you have a final weight in mind, or seeing how it goes?

Thank you. I don't have a final weight in mind - currently 13st 10lbs and would really like to get down to 13st dead if possible. I'm riding the Deloitte RAB in September and the less I have to drag over the hills of the UK the better.

I forgot to add to my previous post that food tracking has proved a god send as well. It wasn't until I started doing this religiously that I realised all of the crap that was going down my throat on a daily basis.

I thought this was worth sharing. There is a lot of evidence that intermittent fasting has health benefits beyond weight loss without explanations of why it might work. But this study shows a mechanism by which liver function is improved by intermittent fasting.

IF promotes production of a protien associated with repairing DNA damage, but was found in the study to also improve fat and sugar metabolism in the liver. It doesn't say which IF regime was used, though.

    Cheers for that mrfpb.

I guess my 'fasting' is in the morning but I don't know what qualifies as 'fasting'. I have coffee and a pro-biotic drink and then nothing till late. late morning. I'm rarely hungry in the morning.
However, I would never cycle on empty.
