    Interesting article here, based on tonight's "Trust me, I'm a doctor" (BBC2). it seems my skewed version of the 16:8 diet, which retains my bad habit of late night snacking, isn't a bad diet after all. This suggests that the fasting period is the key issue, so "eat little and often" isn't necessarily good advice.

    Personally I found it easy to adjust to not eating before midday or even 2:00pm. Having eaten later, I find I'm more full at the time in the evening when I used to pig out.

    Worse than my starting weight for last year - Reset weight loss to zero.

    That explains it - I apply the eat little, often approach - Normally a handful of nuts or a bit of fruit every two hours or so.

    My personal, n=1 opinion is that we in the affluent world have forgotten what hunger really means. We dont know the difference between wanting and needing food. When we fast on a regular basis then our bodies learn the difference between too little and enough, so send 'satiation' signals at a more appropriate time. As I say, just opinion.

    Okay Christmas and new years stuff all behind me, time to kick this shit up a gear or two, Amstel Gold race is looming and i know from previous experience its a hard early season challenge.

    Reached my goal last year .. then spent a few months eating more and lifting in a vain attempt to be the most badass dad in the playground .. and have gone back up in weight.

    Now its time to cut again .... so starting again at 75kg ... bring on the pain of eating normally

    Was initially disappointed with not hitting my target but just been reminded that I actually started the year at 108kg (before I joined this thread) so 5.5kg loss over the 12 months isn't too bad. Hopefully I can maintain the gradual decline and then look at resetting my goals

    Hi folks

    I’m interested in people’s views regarding a safe daily net calorie figure. My wife’s just started a new diet/fitness routine but is netting below 800 some days which feels a bit low.

    I'm not sure what you mean by "net" calorie figure. 800 total would be way too low for most people. I come out at 1500 kCal/day required to sit and do nothing all day (BMR), 2400 kCal/day required for a moderately active week (TDEE).

    Also is your wife on a crash diet- i.e. to get back in shape in a week or two after Christmas overindulgence and then go back to normal, or is she looking for a long term lifestyle change. A massive daily deficit will not be sustainable physically or psychologically. Worth watching "How to Lose Weight Well" on All 4 (Channel 4 catch up service ) as they look at crash diets as well as longterm diets - they look at different fads every week, the online index might help you get a look at the plan your wife is considering.

    Thanks for the reply, an example of net from yesterday was eating 1117 calories and using 319 cycling, making a net of 798.

    She’s looking for a long term sustainable option rather than a quick fix.

    The calculator suggests looking at a weekly activity level and using the TDEE (Total Daily energy expenditure) as a guide. To lose weight you need to be below the TDEE, but going below the BMR (kCal required to do nothing all day) is likely to be harmful when done day after day on a long term bais. Unless your wife is a house elf from Hogwarts, then 1117 is likely to be below BMR. Look at the diet over a typical week of the plan to see if it is healthy in this regard.

    That is very low.

    Depends how much exercise she does.
    Depends how big/tall she is.
    Depends what she want to achieve.

    2000Kcal's per day approximately, for women but do a BMI calculation.

    did a 30 min lactate threshold session this morning, oh dear god that was horrible at 5:45 in the morning, i would have puked if i was actually awake

    tomorrows morning session is 30 mins aerobic, how bad can it be .....?
