Hi NO, take what you are saying, and have been training with power for 18 months now, so it would become apparent if I was struggling or dropping off.

I used to think that too, but if there is some yummy olives, smoked sea salt, and high quality olive oil and balsamic involved, it (for me) becomes mouth wateringly delicious :-)

A blip last week, but managed to get it back under control this week, plus a fair amount of cycling, and work at the Velodrome, sees me go under my target for the first time, and due to a new FTP yesterday morning, I have managed to achieve (just!) 4w\kg, which was a target from last year, pretty happy with that.
Going to see if it is possible to maintain this kind of weight, and see how we go - feeling totally normal at present, well as normal as I can be ;-)
I genuinely think the cutting out of bread has probably made the biggest difference this year, both in terms of losing weight and feeling less tired, and overall more healthy - wish I had tried it years ago now!Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

Was that a full 60min FTP test, or 20min and using the 95% rule?
Either way, congrats on hitting 4W/Kg!
It's a short term aim for me too, but given I'm still carrying excess baggage from winter and I'm struggling to to be restrained from Calories this summer, I'm ~5Kg heavier than this time last year at ~78Kg and I'm a fair way off an FTP of ~312W (~271W using 95% 20min and yesterday set a new PB of real world "hour of power" of ~250W over rolling cat4 hill terrain).================

it wasn't a full hour, but rather the Trainer road twin 8 test, so 0.9 of 275 watts - delighted I managed to hit the same power for each 8 minute block, and cadence was within 1 of each other.
4w\kg seemed a very distant target when I started training last January - back then I wasn't even at 1.9, and the dip I had the end of last year (loss in power and increase in weight by nearly a stone) was not ideal.
I generally don't struggle with motivation, but it does happen from time to time.
I'm hoping if I have specific events, or targets like a higher power, time trials, racing on the Velodrome, that will motivate me to keep my mind on training hard, and getting fitter and stronger.
I struggled, and still do, with healthy eating, my personal guilty pleasures are chocolate, crisps, and cake.
If I buy them, I eat them - if I am at work and someone buys sweet stuff for their birthday, I generally eat it - I have a very sweet tooth unfortunately.
I still generally have my fruit\veggie smoothies for breakfast 5 days or so a week, but if I want a snack I tend to have a bit of no added sugar muesli\bran flakes\shredded wheat, with soya milk.
The soya milk was just by accident, no idea if it is meant to be more healthy that normal milk, just prefer it.
I recommend trying to axe bread from your diet though, I think you'll know within 1-2 weeks whether it was a really good choice or not.
During this fabulous summer, have been eating loads of salad, with tuna, chicken etc, so will be interesting to see how that pans out during the winter, when the idea of a nice fresh salad will likely not be attractive!
Am thinking if i can get lower than my original target then that gives me some wiggle room.
That's an impressive FTP you have NO, and even more so for the rolling hour power.
I'm sure you will get there with the weight, and at the end of the day, on the flat, or on rolling terrain, weight is not as important as out and out power.
My long term target is 300W, shorter term, 275W and or 4.5w\kg, whichever one comes first.
I managed 275w last autumn in my local hill climb, so will be targeting something around 300W this year, if at all possible.

I'd also suggest mixing up the TrainerRoad ramp test with the existing FTP tests. May not be any more accurate than the FTP test but the couple of times I've done it it's come out similar to my existing FTP and it's a refreshing change compared to trying to pace 2x8mins or 1x20mins.
Diet-wise. Fruit and veg for breakfast doesn't seem like you're giving yourself enough to start the day on. Fruit and veg smoothies may just leave you feeling peckish quickly and then you're more likely to want the chocolate/cake sugar hit later on.
Anyway, if it's any use as a comparison, my current thing is...
I've got ( :shock: :shock: :shock: ) an Ironman this weekend and have followed fairly closely the Long Distance Base > Build > Specialty plans since the start of the year. Swimming and running more than I have before, and haven't attempted to drop any weight (5'10, 72kg). Been averaging about 12-14 hours training a week (roughly 1.5hrs on weekdays and 3.5hrs on weekends).
Last FTP test reckoned 312W, which nudged up from 308 and 302 before. The recently introduced Ramp Test reckoned 320W which is a bit high judging by how I've started failing on the tougher sets.
Anyway, picking a particular plan suits me. It stops me worrying whether I'm doing the right thing or not and keeps me alternating between swim/bike/run with sensible recoveries on each.
Food wise, I have an incredibly boring breakfast and lunch. Pretty much every day.
Breakfast:
Double espresso
Porridge. 65g oats, 235ml whole milk. Soaked overnight and then on the hob with water the next morning. Slice half a banana.
1 scoop Huel with a couple of spoons of greek yoghurt, other half of the banana, bit of peanut butter, some of the coffee grounds from the espresso, top up to about 400ml with whole milk and blend.
Snack on malt loaf, or a pastry mid-morning
Lunch:
3 scoops Huel, bit of yoghurt or banana, shot of crap espresso from the work machine, top up with a pint of whole milk.
Probably a chocolate bar, I have a sweet tooth.
Dinner:
Varies a bit more. Generally healthy. Salmon/veg/rice if I'm at home.
Eating out far too often at the moment.
Bad habits going to Honest Burger after club swim on Thursdays.
Bad habits having a few drinks and then eating out after club open water swim on most Fridays.

Yep always followed specific plans, start the year with both the sweet spot base plans, then a couple of the build ones, and now onto the speciality century one - seemed appropriate with Velo south approaching!
I SHOULD have already tried the 20 minute test, as I want to TT pretty soon.
I'll give the ramp test another go at some point, but it didn't work for me when I did try it, could have been an off day for me though.
I may have unintentionally mislead you on my usual breakfast, additionally in there is circa 30g of porridge oats, guess that is the main part that fuels me and fills me up until lunchtime.
I can usually hold off the chocolate cravings until the evening.

Fair play with that training commitment and time you are putting it, I take my hat off to you.
I can only manage about half that realistically, but still pleased to see reasonable improvements.
Super impressive FTP there, that is the kind of figures I aspire to, and dream of - we will see, but suspect that may be unobtainable for me at this point in my life.
Currently attempting to race on the Velodrome, and am finding myself lacking, but then out and out power is not something I currently have, so perhaps I am simply not built for it - more of a hill climber I think.
However I do find it enjoyable, and it's kind of training without feeling like it if tat makes sense.
Totally agree with you on the plans though, takes the guess work out of it - perhaps if i had more time on my hands I would like to delve into it, but with a young family, that isn't happening for some 12 years or so.
ooh had another go at the hill climb from last year, and managed to average 288 watts throughout, and knocked 37 seconds off it, and put myself into the top 200 out of over 5000 times, pretty pleased with that, and think I can improve by the time of the event.

Not entirely as planned.
Hot weather meant we were expecting a non-wetsuit swim would be likely. I'm not a great swimmer but had kind of accepted the likelihood. Then Saturday morning (day before the race) we hear the swim is cancelled. Hot weather -> too much blue/green algae -> city council declared swimming in any of the lakes in/around Hamburg was not safe.
So they replace the swim with another run.
Long distance tri is now an ultra duathlon. 6k run, 180k bike, 42k run.
Probably not a bad thing, my running is mediocre but a little better than my swimming.
But it's a bit annoying, I came to do an Ironman and while an ultra marathon punctuated by a 180k bike is still fairly epic, we're all slightly put out.
You lose some of the atmosphere. The nervous tension when I did Barcelona 70.3 in May, with everyone limbering up in wetsuits at 6.30am with Thunderstruck booming out across the beach was awesome.

A 6k jog with everyone making sure not to set out fast was less memorable.
Anyway, 6k run ticked off fine, jogged around in about 30mins and grabbed the bike.
Bike leg went very much to plan, I'd decided that 210W (~68% of FTP) should be the target power throughout (knowing I'd end up a little lower but at least wanting 210 to be the number I gravitate towards).
Two 90k laps - 10k getting into/out of the city and then the rest being flat and fast. NP 197W for the first lap, 193W for the 2nd, ticked off the 112 miles in 5 hours, eating and drinking plenty and generally feeling comfortable. Happy.
Into T2, change into run kit, set off making sure to keep HR down and not head off too fast.
4 x 10.5km laps. First lap very comfortable in about 55mins.
Clubmate laps me on my 2nd lap (on his way to a 3hr 17min marathon) and asks how I'm going. Alright thanks, chest is a bit tight but hopefully doesn't get worse (I've got a bit of trendy sports asthma that's popped up once or twice on half distance races). Few words of encouragement before he disappears into the distance.
About 4k later and my chest tightens up, a lot. Slow the jog somewhat, few puffs of the inhaler. Trot around for another k. Few chest spasms, can't really get a lungful of air. Bollocks. Walk a bit, eases off. Run a bit, comes back.
Long story short, the first lap took under an hour, the remaining 3 laps was a miserable run/walk that took over 4 hours. Ended up with a 5hr marathon (the half marathon off the bike in Barcelona was 1hr 37mins for reference) and 10hrs 50mins overall.
I'd managed to convince myself that sub 10 was feasible when I was finishing on the bike so I ended up a bit pissy with myself. I'm pleased that I got around, annoyed that I think I lost my focus and mentally checked out when the run/walk kicked in.
But I need to get over myself . Sensible-me knows that you can't legislate for an unexpected asthma attack in 30+ degree temps on your first ever Ironman/ultra duathlon, and you certainly can't only adjust your estimates based on best case scenarios and then not readjust when things aren't perfect. I have a tendency to overthink things.
Learning experience.

Cracking job vpnikilov, that's over 2 stone gone - how long did it take you if you don't mind me asking?
I've managed to lose nearly the same, but with a fairly large upwards blip in the middle it ended up taking some 20 months.
Going on holiday in 2.5 weeks, have decided to cut out chocolate and cake (he said) completely until then, and see what effect it has on the scales.
@dhope - that sound like quite the experience, but also that you made the best of it that you could, and at least finished - I can see how that way would be pretty frustrating though :-(
Had it been the other way around, and you had started slowly, but managed to finish strongly, it would likely feel like more of a success - but you are at the mercy of what your body can handle of course.
I suffer from hayfever, but count myself as very fortunate to not suffer from asthma - though I understand some people grow out of it as they get older?

It's a different discipline to Ironman but not completely. If you're training for middle distance tri for example then Sprint works well as speed work for it. And the volume of training I was doing for Hamburg naturally meant I was getting faster over the shorter stuff too so was able to pick up a few age group wins and podiums at local races which I wasn't doing last year. Definitely got my eye on some of the ETU and ITU qualifiers next year. Though I'd fully expect if I qualified to get my ass handed to me in the champs
(and actually, I'd say that an Ironman isn't as epic as I'd thought it was. A 5k is an impossible dream if you can't run for a bus without stopping. Likewise someone's first 50k or 100k bike ride. Or, to bring it slightly back on topic - losing a boatload of weight. It's just a series of incremental changes of behaviour applied over a period of time)0 -

Agree... an IM for most reasonably trained amaterus is around the 12 hour mark, more or less like a lumpy 300 km bike ride, which is far from an epic. I appreciate is different and probably more demanding and all of that, but the only currency I can compare is time...
I pushed the time envelope reasonably easily going from 9 hours as the max I ever cycled to 24 in the space of 12 months... and 24 is not an epic for many seasoned randonneurs... in fact even the 1400 km LEL is not an epic...
Most agreed the 1000km and 15k of climbing Mille Cymru was "an epic" but probably only because it started with 30 degrees and ended with a couple of inches of rain over the last 24 hours in Snowdonia...
It's a good thing, time to stop using the term "epic" for any endevour slightly out of the normleft the forum March 20230 -

Got up to 93 by the start of this year, so not a huge progress for about a year and a half...
And then came the training for Maratona dles Dolomites. That was a huge goal for me and I knew I had to lose a considerable amount of weight to perform well, so started going to the gym three times a week as well. To be honest, it was the gym that contributed to losing all this weight, cycling alone couldn't have done it! Now I am maintaining about 84-84.5, but I need to start hitting the gym again as I haven't been in the last month and a half... Probably need another goal now.0 -

I bought a second bike to ride. OK, only during the weekend, and no commutinig, but still! And despite of all this, and despite not having access to deep fried mars bars for two months, I have put between 1 and 2 kg over the summer. FFS. Bloody tapas (pintxos in Donostia), bloody reserva for less than 8€/bottle, bloody cheese boards, and bloody "wouldn't it be nice to have an ice cream after the beach?"
