After working 6 weeks of nights leading up to Christmas last year, then a bout of illness including pneumonia during the first couple of months of this year, (no exercise but I never lost my appetite!), I found myself at 74kg, which is around 7kg over my ideal cycling weight and seemingly all of it was sat around my waist. With two trips to the Alps to come later this year, a month ago I started a kind of diet for the first time in my life.

I say kind of, as all I’ve done is cut right down on chocolate, crisps and bread, and make sure my meals are decently healthy. Im down to 70kg and finding it pretty easy to drop the weight to be honest.

OK, it seems Mr FPB's table is the latest (27th March?), so I'll update my weight there.

Somehow, I'm a full kg heavier than before Xmas, and has been stable for the past couple of weeks. I'm seriously pissed. Might have to get a new scale. I mean, I'm cycling more than ever, I'm fitter, more powerful and have more stamina, but that bloody scale doesn't go down!. I'll assume the extra weight is all muscle for my godly thighs.

SInce I stopped eating meat in January (and, with the excpetion of a sprinkle of parmisan here and there, even cheese) my weight has been constant at 70.5 kg, regardless of what I do or eat.

I eat a lot of carbs, try to keep them as "brown" as possible, lots of beans and pulses...

This will be followed by ice cream and whatever I decide to complement it.

I pulverised 4 Shredded wheat less than 5 mins ago ('cos it's the only way I can fit them in the bowl) and drenched it in full fat milk and sprinkled brown sugar all over it and i'm about to tuck in.

    Never mind Jesse's diet tips.

Yeah... easier to keep the weight down, easier to keep blood pressure low and cholesterol low, easier to stay away from nasty stomach/bowel/pancreas cancer.
There is even some (admittedly weak) evidence linking meat consumption with Alzheimer...
Either way, the argument for going Vegan or at least Vegetarian is compelling... I do like meat, I am not overly concerned about bovine methane emissions, I have no particular concern about the way animals are raised or slaughtered in this country and I am pretty sure grass fed/organic meat is as good as it can realistically be.
That said... it's freakishly bad for you!

I've done the all Super Randonneur series since, so clearly it works for long distance cycling too 8)

I've had the odd "weakness"... typically bacon and black pudding maybe half a dozen times since January... I can live with any label people want to put to that... flexitarian seems to be the most common...

Mmmh... it's mostly water that you lose, which gets replenished fairly quickly... good idea about the black pudding though... when I ate it regularly I used to order some from the Bury Company which was fat free (and even gluten free, by chance) but surprisingly nice. Most of the stuff in supermarkets is packed with lard.

    Woosh!

If it works for you, fine. My post was all about eating like a horse with no reference/comparison to a vegetarian diet. A sort of 'anti diet' post. ITB got that.

I am 67kg's. Constant, after last January's 'blip'. So I have a 4kg weight advantage on you going uphill and a dodgy replacement hip, a fully functioning replacement hip, suppressed immune system and under active thyroid to re-dress that balance :D
I don't have high BP, I have the opposite.
Bowel cancer is also attributed to lack of fibre.
I do not eat any processed meats - sausages, cheap ham etc. We have cut our red meat consumption right down and have replaced it with fish.
We cook all our meals from scratch.

Eating red meat is not going to make you a 'statistic'.

It doesn't even have to be red meat, for what it matters. If you look at the incidence of cardiovascular disease among populations eating mainly chicken, they are not significantly different from those eating prevalently beef...

But they are both significantly worse than those of populations eating solely plants.

I think the all distinction between red and white meat is an invention of the rather powerful "poultry lobby". Cholesterol is about the same at just under a gram per kilo, saturated fat only marginally less.
The only difference I can see is that chicken is not hang to "age", like beef carcasses are, a process which inevitably results in degradation of the cells.

Exactly. I though part of of point of cycling was so that you can eat stuff like red meat without turning into lard arse.

Going veggie or vegan may well make you live longer: in any event it'll certainly make it feel like you do :) Same goes for all this teetoal crap.

Are you suffering a little from the sudden realisation of your own mortality by chance?

The French eat high fat, high cholesterol food. They have less heart disease than us.
Is stress factored into any of the UK stats? I mean, the highest rate of heart attacks in the UK is at 8am on a Monday morning.
As a cyclist, you are going to burn off Cholesterol, unless you are eating far too much of it.

My personal concerns the additives in red meat - steroids, antibiotics and the accumulation of pesticides in the food chain, but the latter is also true for vegetables.
Interesting fact in Radio 4's food programme. The test for measuring the vitamin and mineral content in food was devised in the 1930's. The test remains identical. This means that modern testing of nutritional content in food can be compared directly.
Organic carrots have a vitamin content of 1 quarter of a standard carrot from the 30's. For example.

So, for an organic and vegetarian diet, you have to be careful of the validity of the assumption.

It is a well known fact that tri-antelopes and pro cyclists have predominantly vegetarian diets during the season simply because certain meats take far too long to digest and in that time, one could have consumed a better foodstuff. So, I see and there are benefits to a vegetarian diet but you have to counter the natural assumption of those perceived benefits with a shed load of variables from personal lifestyle, to environmental factors, lactose intolerence/intolerence, gluten tolerance/intolerance, stress levels and susceptibility of cholesterol - some people are more susceptible than others. Just to name a few variables.

You would have to compare tangible effects of adopting this diet with intangible effects such as recovery, coupled with age factors to safely assume that the choice has been beneficial.

It all started when, despite cycling 8,000 miles per year, I turned out with 85/135 mmHg blood pressure, consistent over several measurements and 5.3 total cholesterol, without being overweight or having any symptom.

I was a bit surprised, as I have never gorged in cheese or meat and hardly eat any ready meals or processed food, although admittedly I did use too much table salt.
I then cut salt, meat, most cheese and dairy and within a couple of weeks my BP was down to 70/110 and it's been pretty steadily there ever since. Haven't measured cholesterol since, but I have no reason to believe it hasn't gone down too (used to be 4.6 5 years ago when I ate more beans).

So, the assumption that bucket loads of sport (10 hours a week in my case) will keep those numbers under control is flawed.
The French paradox is not such a paradox, after all they live a couple of years longer and they have a slightly lower rate of heart disease... it's not that they have eradicated it (which would be true for countries eating only a plant based diet).

Dietary cholesterol has bugger all effect on serum cholesterol. You can eat as many eggs and prawns as you like, they are no longer on the dietary naughty step.

I do like the Gorilla cartoon; quite thought provoking. Be curious to know what their intestinal bugs look like.

My recurrent issue has been anaemia. I keep running out of iron. Despite tests the docs don't know where it's going. Stopped giving blood as a result. Already eat a lot of green stuff and beans, and take a daily multivitamin with iron, but now also trying to eat a bit more red meat / liver.
