I did the Rapha festive 500 challenge (505km total) but tbh it’s had a bit of a negative effect on me. I’ve not felt like commuting at all so far this week and have used any little excuse to go in the car in a morning instead of on the bike. :( I’m feeling pretty lethargic and lazy.

I also put 2lb on over Christmas despite doing 315 miles. Haha :D

    Hard work begins tomorrow.

Were you eating lard sandwiches? That's impressive!

Alas no, it was a combination of:

    Very little cycling
Dropping my healthy smoothie breakfasts (Back on them from yesterday) for conventional ones
    Lots of Ale
    Mince pies
    More Ale
    Cheese
    Wine
    Cakes
    Chocolate
    Ale
    Biscuits
Several lengthy visits to the pub for more Ale (I was feeling very sociable this last month)

    You get the idea.

*FTP tomorrow early doors is the idea, to see what the actual damage is :?
And then take it from there I guess......

*It was meant to be this morning, but on 4 hours sleep, a decent FTP test does not make.

I was not intending to cause offence to the Ale ones - as it happens, by some cruel twist of fate, Ale cycling kit is my No1 favourite at the moment.

I have just googled, and was surprised to see that one pint of doom bar, is only a smidge over 200 calories - had assumed (Wrongly) it would be twice that, not sure why.

So perhaps the Ales are only part of the issue, and it was more the cheese and cakes etc, although.......
Many ales gives me the munchies, so it is partly responsible for further cheese and cake consumption imho.

Lol, coincidentally my love for Ale is across the board, so a couple of base layers, some socks, a jacket, and my first pair of Ale shorts were indeed purchased

Sounds like you have plenty of re-fuelling material there, grabbing a small handful to take on each 1+ hour ride.;)

I've lost ~2Kg over Xmas, compared to the ~78Kg I weighed the week before the festivities, but sadly that's not down to restraint... Today, I think I'm finally over seven days of a really stubborn stomach bug, which lowered my appetite (and kept me off the bike until a little earlier) while ensuring I kept hydrated according to the new digital bathroom scales.

There are probably better ways to keep weight under control!

I won't update the 'spreadsheet' because unlike DanielB (who ate all the pies) and unlike Kleinstroker, I have managed to pedal a bit despite the weather and I am only 67kg's, where at this time last year I was over 70. Good boy me.

My post Christmas peak was 71.7kg, so only 3lbs up on Christmas Eve. Finally getting my eating habit under control, though there's still some chocolate lying around. Only one ride and one Parkrun this year so far. I'm off today and the weather is miserable, but I may take my son's hard tail mtb out for a muddy ride.

Mental arithmetic is usually my strong point, but I signed up to the Dragon Ride Gran Fondo last week, thinking "10th June - I'll have six months to train". Realised afterwards, it's only five months.

Back on the wagon, kind of.
Have changed my starting weight from 74.4 (Jan 17) to what it was at the beginning of this year.

Epic weight gain (For me) over Christmas, but looking on the bright side, I am still 6kg less than I was this time next year, so........

Not planning to do quite as much turbo this year, so will be interesting to see how that effects, or not, my weight.
Also planning to have the odd treat here and there - see how that plays out.

In all honesty, furious with myself for allowing it to slip so much after so much good and consistent work, and my cyclingn fitness has dropped in parallell, so a double whammy really.
Know it is within my power to get back to where I was though, so hoping to be my racing weight by May - we will see.

Assuming I can get back down to where I was in October, then this coming end of year I want to make sure I only put on a maximum of 2kg) so need to make sure I do not combine a load of bad eating with a total lack of cycling, as the two combined are a potent combination.

I kind of ran out of enthusiasm for training on November, so am thinking this year to try and mix things up a bit, and also take some 1 or 2 week breaks from the turbo altogether, so see if I can avoid that happening again - anyone else had similar (in terms of motivation) and or found a method that happens to work for them?

Dropping turbo sessions from 5 to 3 a week, and I can get two of them done during working day afternoons, and one early before work - then planning to ride in the real world, come rain or shine, on the weekend - 35-50 miles.

Well that was harder work than expected, and a lot more fun too. Experiencing the childish joy of getting filthy dirty and not caring. I wish I'd worn my HRM as the estimated 600 kCal on Strava (for a 90min ride) does not match how hungry I feel. It's the first time in about 6 or 7 months that I've had an energy gel mid ride.

I'm now resisting the urge to buy a "foul weather" bike of my own.

Weather and boredom on the rollers. Last summer was pants. This winter is either monsoon or Baltic.

I always try to maintain some amount of continuity and that's motivation in itself as I think to myself that this will be worth it when the weather improves.

Oh - eat less DB, it's far simpler.

I notice you do a hell of a lot with little fat loss (seemingly). Are you simply burning glycogen in those short TT sessions and not fat? ... and in the process making yourself hungry because your body wants to restore sugar levels as quick as possible.

Longer but fewer sessions perhaps? My average ride is just over 2 hours. I only get out 2 times per week at this time of year.

    Just a thought.

    Thanks Pinno,

this is true, weather in general in this country is less than encouraging :-(

Last year I was devoted to seeing improvements in my FTP, and had a couple of hill climbs I was targeting, so had no issues until after the last event.

I guess at that point too I started to struggle to see power gains, and I suppose that must have demotivated me, rather than galvanising me to work harder as it ideally should have, and must do for some people.

My current motivations this year, although nothing set in stone as such, are that I am looking to get accreditation for an outdoor Velodrome, that should be possible in the spring (Potentially to race or participate rather, in the summer), and also that I wanted to start time trialling locally too - I will be looking to hill climb again at the end of the year, but at the moment that seems a long way away.

I do get the 'eat less' mantra, and can see how it could work, but the trouble with me is when I am hungry, I'm hungry, so last year I tried to streamline what I ate when I had the munchies, and to go for a healthyish option, so muesli and skimmed milk or (maybe not so healthy) a jam sarnie - appreciate the sugar content in that is probably a lot, but I'm a simple man!

To be fair, the stats support that approach working for me last year, having dropped just over 11kg, and it was a nice steady drop, nothing drastic, probably averaged something in the region of 250g per week, though bigger losses in the earlier part of the year as you would expect.

I'll be honest, my knowledge of the workings of it, and fat loss etc are pretty much zero, so I truthfully do not know. I think I must burn a fair amount of energy, but where it comes from you would know more than I!

As I said, I have literally just started the low volume (3.5 hours per week) TR base course part 2, and if that goes well, will move onto the build one end of Feb, hoping those 3 hard sessions, combined with actually getting out on the road at the weekend will add up to similar effort to that last year, but maybe a bit more sustainable interest wise - not that I suffered with that for the first 10 months, so not sure that it was actually :?

Well, may I suggest that even with the best will power in the world, it is difficult to not eat lots when you are feeling hungry - especially after a session, whatever that 'session' is?
Trying to stick to a rigid diet when you are screaming out for something more palatable than celery sticks with low fat Mayo (metaphorically speaking) is asking too much and hats off to anyone who can sustain that.
So where does that leave you?

Okay, hypothetically, why not aim for longer rides where there is much less chance to replace the lost fat that you burn?
So, you'll have to start doing rides where you will definitely be burning fat.

That way, you can get home, shower and eat and eat well.

Time trials are short. Unless you are planning 50/100 milers. There was a bouncer who took to time trialling some time ago who regularly was in the comic (CW) posting exceptional times for a newbie but what was far more significant was the fact that he was very over weight. Using TT's as a training Carrot is perhaps not going to assist in the weight loss.
So you can be fit as fook but not necessarily at the weight you want to be.

The quote below is from 'neeb' in another thread:
    neeb wrote:
I simply use the very approximate estimation of calories burned...to reassure myself that I’m not overeating when I come back from a long/hard ride and feel the inclination to stuff my face.. If I’ve just burned something in the region of 2000 KCal I can eat a big pizza for dinner and still be in calorie deficit relative to my normal daily energy intake and expenditure.. :D

How about aiming for a hilly sportive in the 80 to 100 mile range? You'll need to loose weight to get you over the lumps and if you want complete the distance comfortably, you'll have to increase the base miles. Which will burn fat.
Take 25 cals per mile as a rough guesstimate and calculate number of calories consumed.
    neeb wrote:
...For a period after exercise your metabolic rate is raised a bit because you are replacing glycogen / repairing muscle / doing other stuff to offset the impact on your body of the exercise. Some of this ongoing increased energy expenditure is already factored into the energy you burned to do the work (i.e. the energy required to replace the glycogen you already burned), but much of it isn’t and is further energy burned on top of what you used to do the work.

This is the upside - your body will be burning fat after the exercise but only if your body has got to and gone over the point where the body starts to use stored fat. That point is different for all individuals.

My (presumptive) theory is that your short(ish) sessions has conditioned you consciously and physiologically to prepare for and consume enough energy to cover the session and recover from the session but... burning fat rarely happens often enough to complete the simple equation: burn more than you consume.

If this whole cycle becomes de-motivating, then there is little surprise that you find it hard to stick to a better diet. It doesn't require a difficult to follow diet, it requires subtle and small changes to reduce calorie intake and train in a way that will be more likely to consume body fat.

You may also find that the intensive session/ride per day (almost) is exhausting, demotivating and not achieving the results you want whereas, longer. less frequent activity does the job adequately and if you have the energy, chucking in a turbo session here and there instead of doing it religiously, might actually be fun and maintain the sort of fitness level you want.

Thanks Pinno for your detaield reply.

I certainly do eat lots (imho) but I try to make it mostly healthy, and not too fatty\calorific - well I did until the last 2 months of 2017.
I don't stick to a rigid diet, and don't think I ever could do tbh, also do not feel that 'diets' perse are good for me, so wouldn't go that route.
I do have my smoothie most mornings (6 days a week) which I know is fairly healthy, fills me up, and stops me snacking, and is also bloomin easy to make up, not expensive, and is easy to travel with, so that is a mahoosive winner for me.
Alas I do not really have the opportunity for longer rides (Work\shool drop offs and pick ups) - well except for the one I am planning to do at the weekend, most weekends it would be 35-50 miles, but I'm sure I can factor some longer ones in there, if I negotiate with the family, and or simply leave early enough - in 2016 I was leaving the house at about 4.45 in the summer, empty roads were great, and back before my daughter was up sometimes!

Good call re the TT's - most would be 10, with the odd 25 thrown in.

I am more aware of calories than I used to be, but I'm not a calorie counter by any means, and as I'm not convinced there is any accurate (?) way of figuring out what has been burnt, not sure I would look to go that way - not suggesting it is rubbish though, and if it works for others then all power to it and them.
Edit* have just seen your 25 calories per mile rule of thumb :-)
So a 50 mile ride ould be circa 1250 calories.

I do like the idea of a hilly sportive, I have done them in the past, but not for a few years, and that would be a good target to aim for and train towards.

I believe I do burn more than I consume (When I am cycling) though, otherwise I would not have lost 11kg last year (That was 6.5 hours+ a week on the bike though), but I think the key requirement for me is to keep on exercising, whether it be cycling, or running, or if I am to take breaks, they need to be shortish ones, and I mustn't go and eat all of the pies and cakes at the same time.

I like eating well, and healthily, but I have been inflicted with a very sweet tooth - if I can keep away from it, and if my willpower is intact, I can fairly easily not eat the stuff, but once the floodgates open, I am seemingly incapable of controlling myself!
Frustrating indeed, but I know what to look out for more now, which is why I am thinking I should allow myself to have a certain number of treats per week, ie a chocolate bar, or a few pints of ale etc etc, but I have yet to see if that will work or not.
For the next few weeks I will simply go back to what I did last year, until I can see a weight movement in the right direction, and then I'll see about introducing that - perhaps I'll say I can bring that in once i get down to 65kg or something as a motivator, but that could equally backfire of course!

I should really edit my entry or delete it completely as it looks like I've achieved last year's weight loss already. Unfortunately that's not the case and I'm back where I started. Christmas saw me put on the now traditional half a stone, and thus far January hasn't helped very much with losing any of it because of
    a) a compulsion to consume all the left over food / confectionery / cakes / biscuits / booze. We're down to the last stollen slice now, and the remaining booze will keep. People do keep having birthdays and bringing edible crap into the office though. Think they should ban it in the workplace; my employer is failing in it's duty of care to me...
    b) several instances of being wined and dined at the company's expense; be rude not to...
    c) not burning nearly as many calories doing the DIY as I would have doing the cycling the DIY prevented me from doing. If you see what I mean. Added to which the poor old dog's had another bout of vestibular disorder so I've been robbed of my usual 15 miles of dog walking in all weathers.

Think I'll update the entry and use the fear of public humiliation, even though I'll never meet any of you lot, as a powerful motivator.
