Not mocking - that would be a bit harsh! It's an issue I've always had. Weight is as much of an issue for me as it is for the bigger lads here, just the other way around. I'm under instructions to buff up and not look a complete weed on a forthcoming beachy holiday!
  • Fair enough. And actually, thinking about it, I believe it's the sudden onset of weight loss that's the problem.

Give rock climbing a go - that'll add some upper body strength and if your light you'll find it a piece of cake :-)

  • I think I do something seriously wrong with my cycling: my waist gets slimmer but my weight continues to go up as my leg muscles get bigger and bigger. I don't mash (at least, if I do, it's a 90rpm) so I don't really understand it. How do the pros stay so skinny?

It isn't helping that I'm doing 140 miles a week on an MTB on Ice Spikers with 2500m of climbing

What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

Not sure but I think most people's adaption to exercise is different - we all have a different genetic disposition.

Also although I too don't mash the gears 95% of the time I know that I have a number of b*stard climbs that I simply have to (I don't have enough gears to do otherwise). So I wouldn't be surprised if these climbs are having a bigger impact on how my legs are adapting to my commute .. because the rest of the time my legs simply aren't as stressed even if it's for a much, much longer period of time/mileage.

I think the only way I could ensure my leg muscles didn't grow would be too stay way from the hills (or change my gearing .. and this is something I'm going to look into).

Maybe it's the same for you?

P.s. If your waist is getting slimmer then I really wouldn't worry about your weight 8)

Yes - part of the trouble is that my ride is nearly ALL hills  If I'm not going up then I'm going down. In fact, the bridge closure has actually introduced a mile of flat and it's quite a novelty.

I have wondered about gearing (or, more accurately, as I think I have plenty of gears, cadence) and whether I should be targeting a higher cadence.

Yup - only trouble is weight is weight - you have to drag it up hills - that then becomes a bit of a viscious circle. It's also a handicap in car racing too.

Think I'll try focusing on a higher cadence. I'm certainly trying to be "lighter" on the pedals which is all part of the same thing

  • Strangely enough I was concentrating on cadence this morning. Average for the whole ride was up from approx 85 to 90.

Basically I read about Cadence pyramids in http://roadcyclinguk.com/riding/training-for-results-commuting.html and it got me thinking. So although I wasn't performing the pyramids this morning (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/277481078) I did push my cadence up for the first 5 miles or so (to around 95).

Reckon I'll spend the next 5-6 weeks consciously doing this (either via pyramids or on a more ad-hoc basis) .. that should be enough time for it to have a chance of becoming ingrained subconsciously.

I bought some scales on the weekend, so thought I'd join in with this. I was 147lbs all the way through my 20s, i.e. 10.5stone. And halfway through my 30s I reached 14 stone, which felt very unhealthy and meant I didn't fit into my jeans anymore  . So I thought I'd aim for 11 stone, or 154lbs. Over half way there since I started commuting about 6 months ago. I'm so much fitter already, and getting faster, but the 1.6 mile hill I have to ride up on my way to work still puffs me out - still carrying too much weight.

Anyone else gain most if not all the weight they lose during the week at the weekend, or is it just me?

Probably the opposite, weight comes down on weekend and goes back up Monday/Tuesday. More has been coming back off each weekend, luckily.

Yes. Had a great week last week. 5 days on the bike, come saturday and sunday, no bike but plenty of food and lager. Can almost see the belly getting bigger again.
Back top the bike today to get rid of it all again.

I dare not check my weight - over the weekend and today I've been eating as though I'm riding 100 miles a day.

Unfortunately zero miles since Friday and no more till Wednesday. Instead at work drinking too much coffee.

I've been trying the 5:2 diet (only the 4:3 version). I weigh in each morning and the day to day fluctuations can be shocking. From Sat morning to Mon morning I put on 1.5kg.

Still haven't got my head round the overnight weightloss - as much as 1kg.

Without wishing to sound crude, but that brown stuff stuff that falls out of your hoop - you know the stuff? It's not made of angel dust and feathers. It has a mass. If you weigh yourself on Sat am after a dump, eat like a pig for 48 hours and don't excrete (there, see, I can be civilised) a lesser mass, you will weigh more. Weight loss is about a long term pattern of declining weight measurements taken at the same time of day under the same circs over a period of weeks.

The weight loss overnight is water, I have long thought. Sweat, exhalation, allied to no water intake over an 8 hour period.

PS: chapeau for doing the 4:3 version. Quite nails. I'm finding that as my training volumes increase I'm moving more to a 6:1 variant, which I suspect is largely pointless. How are you finding it?
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.
