A few days off the bike due to errands, trips and parties and I'm down 6lbs! Probably acutely aware of the lack of exercise so don't eat anything like as much on non-bike days."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

Well i've missed this years target from now on i'm going to stuff my face in preparation for winter.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

If anyone has failed to meet their target this year can I suggest you ask Father Christmas for this little book? Might not work, but it's a chance I'm prepared to take.Nobody told me we had a communication problem0

I'm totally stumped. Went to the USA for two weeks and didn't cycle but ate American-style. So what do you think happened? Well, my trousers got tighter as I expected BUT my weight went DOWN. So am I really losing more muscle mass than fat mass gained? Those cheery chaps in Road Training (that's sarcasm for the most humourless bunch of people I've ever found on the Web) would tell me I'm an idiot for thinking that. But they're at a loss to explain it.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

Anyone see that Horizon programme on the health benefits of fasting?
I'm giving it a whirl.
I posted that 23 August.
Been doing the two days a week on 600 cals, eat what I like on the other days, 4 days of 20mile commutes per week since then. Typically one other run or swim or gym session per week.
Lost 5kg in under two months. Haven't found it difficult.
Currently at my lowest weight for at least 15 years.
Worth a go

What do you eat for your 600kcals?
sorry missed that.
Breakfast - skinny cappucino
Lunch - big pack of fruit salad, muller light yogurt
Late afternoon - skinny cappucino, bag of popcorn
Evening - apple or piece of toast
Obviously I feel hungry but not desperately so and knowing that I can eat what I like the next day helps me stick with it.0 -

I would add a vote for Intermittent Fasting if anyone is considering it. I started on the 7th of August with two days a week and then shifted to three days a week to speed up the weight loss a bit.
I am down 8kg(18lb) in two and a half months. Slow and steady but I see no reason why I will not be able to keep it up till I hit my goal, probably around March 2013 and then drop back to 1 or 2 days a week forever for some of the health benefits.
I can't stand calorie counting so I just eat nothing on the fast day except dinner which I keep to a "small portion." No real impact on my day to day life and I just swap the fast days around to fit in with social life.. wish I had found about it 15 years ago.Roberts Audax - Raleigh Fixie - Thorn Tandem0 -

Yeah, that's how I feel about it but obviously only 2 months in so may be getting a bit carried away.
I think I'd be able to maintain my target weight with 1 day per week plus the excercise I enjoy doing. That should be easy (famous last words...)0 -
I haven't had dinner yet what I notice most when I'm hungry I get really cold, like need a jacket kinda cold.
Right now my fingers and toes are like iceRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

ITB,
I'm not sure that fasting can work for everyone. I did some mountaineering with a guy who basically had to eat every hour or he got dizzy/mood swings etc.
The Horizon documentary did suggest that fasting can be helpful in resetting blood chemistry so that the body begins to manage blood sugar swings more smoothly but I don't know how strong the evidence is. I suspect your blood sugar levels fluctuate more widely than mine.0 -
Might have to give this fasting thing a try. Sounds like the sort of thing I'd find easy as I never really need eat (just want to eat!)

4,000 odd miles this year so far pretty much the same weight as the start of there year. Cycling does not equal weight loss, at least not for me. Need another plan....--

The latter, I've done it to some extend although it could go further. However, ultimatley I want to go up hills faster which means the former. So both!--

sorry missed that.
Breakfast - skinny cappucino
Lunch - big pack of fruit salad, muller light yogurt
Late afternoon - skinny cappucino, bag of popcorn
Evening - apple or piece of toast
Obviously I feel hungry but not desperately so and knowing that I can eat what I like the next day helps me stick with it.
Ooh - that's interesting. Mrs MRS, who has been researching this, seems to believe that, for it to work, you should also actually eat as few times as possible during the day: ie once or twice. You seem to demonstrate otherwise - though I guess you don't know whether your approach is effective at switching off the production of IGF-1 hormone.
Anyhow, I've started today with a 300kCal bowl of porridge made with water. I've made it to lunchtime....ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Well I think there are two different things:
a) does intermittent fasting offer a doable way of reducing calorie intake
b) does it also cause beneficial hormonal changes (blood chemistry, cell repair, etc)
Even if it isn't doing the second, I think it is a good way of doing the first - it just seems a practical, psychologically sympathetic pattern to me.
But on the second point, bear in mind that I am typically commuting 10 miles each way on a fast day. This means I get up in the morning having not eaten since the previous evening, run down my glycogen stores on the commute, don't consume enough to meet by base demand during the day so should still be emptying glyocgen or fat burning, will be fat burning on the commute home and then fat burn through the night as the body tries to rebuild glycogen stores,
What I'm saying is that I think the exercise that I'm doing means that eating bits and pieces during the day probably isn't enough to derail the hormonal changes. My reading suggested that the hormonal changes from fasting are very similar to those caused by lots of exercise.0 -

The weight loss bit is depressingly simple. A kg of fat = around 9000kcal so you need to create a deficit of this amount to shift the kg.
Each fasting day you create a deficit of around 2000kcal (varies of course) and assuming you don't manage to catch up the non-fasting days you will lose weight matching the deficit over time.
There is nothing "magic" about the fasting when it comes to weight loss. The reasons it is better for me than normal dieting are all psychological. I find it far easier to face the idea of one day where I eat nothing till dinner time but then know I can have a normal day tomorrow and repeat that patten all week and then have a normal weekend than saying for the next six months you have to keep to down to 1700kcal a day. It is just so much more appealing to take the pain in short sharp bursts rather than looking ahead at months of denial. Also, from a self discipline and will power perspective I find it much easier to eat nothing than little.
Somehow the body seems to be happy with the pattern as well... which does seem to make a bit of sense from a historical perspective: you did not manage to catch that antelope today so you go hungry, but when you get that rabbit tomorrow you a happy to wolf the whole thing down. Whereas a normal diet just feels like long term starvation.
So, nothing magic but maybe a more psychologically appealing way to restrict calories for people with personalities like mine.
However, where there *might* be some magic is in the other health benefits that come along with fasting, such as the reduction of IGF-1, increased insulin sensitivity, slowing of loss of mental capacity etc, etc.... Long term studies in humans don't exist and the ones in animals are inconclusive. Anecdotally, I feel great!
For the reasons above I treat the fast days as real fasts... water and black tea only. Zero calories for 24 hours. After the first couple of weeks it is so easy I barely notice the fast days.. Except for the cold.. you will feel the cold more but that is easily fixed with a nice cardigan.Roberts Audax - Raleigh Fixie - Thorn Tandem0 -
Yup - the calorie deficit bit is very simple. I'm guessing it also helps reduce the amount you eat on other days (certainly anecdotally, that's what people say) maybe through habit and "shrinking" of the stomach.
The IGF-1 bit I'm particularly interested in - I work in the diabetes industry so I know enough to not want to go there and I've had more exposure to cancer in the last couple of years than I'd hoped to have in an entire lifetime so not adding to that would be nice too.
Returning to weight loss - I am interested to see if I can blow through the plateau I seem to reach on the overall mass: seemingly I'm destined to weigh around 90kg whether that's made up of muscle or fat - whether I have a 32" waist or a 35" waist.
ETA - It's nearly 5pm and I've made it on just the small coffee cup of oats and the water I used to make porridge at 8am this morning. I don't feel bad at all.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
