I only discovered my garmin had smart recording last week...and was using it by default (had the garmin 6 months or so)

Always assumed it took a gps reading every second...apparently not. WHY IS IT THE BLOODY DEFAULT!! :)

Since I turned the smart recording off my strava average speed on the commute (lots of stop/start) is a lot closer to the garmin average so its better for that.

I did a few tests using the iphone strava app compared with the garmin last year and found that there were differences on the shorter segments as expected...some wildy out but suprisingly, mostly pretty similar. I guess this was why...

I think it produces smaller files and requires less power to be on smart vs 1 second. Lets face it, for most purposes its fine, but not short KOM's :D

Damn it I have shamed myself and let you all down

Tonight on my way to meet the family for dinner I spotted two cyclists disappearing over the crest of the hill on my usual morning commute which I know every single bump hole and stone, the chase was on plus I was racing the wife in her car to the restaurant.

Anyway I made the catch on the second false flat section, pass with a welcome and warning of the car closing behind, the second riders "player" was clearly faster on the climb and not expecting but in true spirit returned the attack overtaking on the next descent, sure as eggs is eggs I'm back and passing and it good time becuase there's a short gentle slope before the fastest drop which as it happens was where I'm meeting for dinner, but anyway I take the lead start to take my line for the turn and drop then bam! Fly straight in the god damn eye.

Speed goes from 37 mph to 7 and its all over I've failed and to make matters worse my wife took a shortcut and was already there.

    Bah!

found the worst climb IMO over this way, its only half a mile or so, well just under 1 if you go from the main road to over the brow, but coming at the end of an 86 mile ride and into a block headwind it had me well and truly on the ropes.

You see, I wrote to Strava about this very thing a few years back:
    Hi there,

I've just finished reading Tyler Hamilton's book, The Secret Race, and have come to the conclusion that Strava need to make a stand against the culture of doping endemic in our beloved sport. I suggest that Strava work with Apple and Google to add in-phone drug testing capabilities.

How I suggest this work is that whenever someone completes a ride which contains one or more KOMs, they should have to aim a small amount of urine into the headphone socket of their phones. The Strava software could then analyse the sample and check to see if the rider is "paniagua" or "riding juiced", and take the appropriate action.

In this way we could even see two distinct leader-boards one for the drug-fuelled maniacs, and one for the regular maniacs.

I know this is a relatively difficult feature, but I'm sure a company of your capabilities could manage to get this sorted by very early April.

    Regards,
    Undercover Elephant (Paniagua)

They told me they found the idea highly intriguing, but I heard no more.

17 acheivements tonight instead of the usual none, slightly favourable wind plus no arm or leg warmers meant I was on it.

Super fun until I caught up with the traffic, but a 16.8mph moving average isn't horrific.

That feeling when you're sat at work with the hope you have a couple of koms on your Garmin, but have to wait until you get home to find out..

i find that annoying with my 705 i used on the commute, much better with the 810 and vioactive i use the rest of the time, but still the 705 is everybit as good as the 500,800 series just lacks the connectivity stuff

but if you're at work why not upload it to garmin connect?

    It's a canal tow path :D

Wouldn't normally go that fast along it due to pedestrians, dogs, etc but took advantage of it being clear due to rain early in the week, and a 7am start on Friday.

What kind of bike you using on there?

I had a pretty unbeatable KOM northwards on the Lea, 23.9mph for 2.6 miles but that segment is no more and I've got a paltry 5th place on the shorter replacement one.

I might have a crack at those Southerly segments if I thought I had any chance of a clear run - never happens.

Planet X xls frame built up with random bits. Fairly heavy but does the job. Takes quite a beating along the path so don't think I'd want to save much more weight. Both mudguards have truncated due to the bike taking too many bumps.

Yes, hard on the bike along there. I tend to ride a fixed on there as you can eat through components - dry and dusty or wet and muddy.

Happy to pull a 9th place for this segment, need to be lucky with 2 sets of lights and 3 road crossings. The majority of the segment is along a dedicated cycleway that runs parallel to the motorway. Great for SCR!

Happy with these from the last couple of weeks:

Third place over 7.6 km: https://www.strava.com/segments/7115372
Fifth place over 11.2 km: https://www.strava.com/segments/7388472
Third place over 6.7 km: https://www.strava.com/segments/6143269
KOM over 4.7 km: https://www.strava.com/segments/2420817 (took 30 secs off previous KOM)
KOM over 13.4km: https://www.strava.com/segments/10803923 (took a minute off previous KOM)

On the other hand, I was giving it a nudge on a part of the last segment a couple of days after and got destroyed by a local tester on his full rig - passed at 45km/h on the flat like I was standing still. Felt like that bloke must have done on the Hull 10 mile TT last year where Wiggins motored past him...
