I'm not sure how but yesterday a segment popped up as I was attacking a climb not a Strava one a Garmin one, I could see a total time and two speed fields plus the segment line but no detail as I was blowing out of my arse trying to get up the hill, sure that's always the case if you're really going for it?

What's happened to the "proper" Millbank northbound segment? It seems to have disappeared from my lists lately. I might have to recreate it from my own ride.

yeah, I am all for Kudos .. but why I need randoms from South America or Israel giving me kudos for a less than impressive ride home where all my segments were ruined thanks to traffic lights, head winds and .. well common sense in the face of danger (I know I know its not the way) ... beats me

This will be because you're a member of a group(s) on Strava. I think I tracked most of random kudos down to the GCN group

I think my last kudos was congratulating me for getting up so early.
The great thing about taking a route you don't usually take is you get loads of cups.

  • Forgive cycling father, for I have sinned...

After having my Nexus 7 2013 since Xmas 2015 and my Aldi £20 cadence/speed sensor since late May 2016 , it was only last night I discovered I could use it with Strava!

Worked for the commute earlier today, it uses the cadence from the Aldi kit and bases speed on the GPS.

Far, far better that the Critvit Pro app I have been using, which often failed to record my journeys, with Nexus case open in my old Endura convertible jacket's back pocket!

It was only when I got home I discovered there were still config bits I needed to input, like my age; weight... No doubt I will still find more stuff hidden away.

When setting up the basics of Strava last night, I only then discovered the Google Fit app, which now gets the data from Strava. Not sure on the steps counter of Google fit, I do an active job, but it reckoned I did ~17k steps (~25% walking, running {cycling?} 75%); 13.5 miles and burning ~3000 calories!

The commute is only ~4.6 miles in and ~4.3 back using different routes, giving my 6/3 segments respectively, but it will be interesting to see how this looks over time (albeit the routes are heavily influenced by traffic lights... And I did disable the auto-pause).

Do you know any Sicilians? Picking up more little trophies from varying the route and I got Kudos from Asprilla and a random Sicilian yesterday.

You got quite a few trophies, that's why I gave Kudos. I didn't realise it was route variation, I thought you'd got some EPO.

I got kudos form the Sicilian bloke as well. Just like I told the rozzers, I've never met him before in my life.

If you look at his profile he's member of every club under the sun.

No, the only EPO I have is the Entertainment Prevention Officer  I'm happy if I get into the top 10%, I really don't get segments along Teddington High Street, not a great place to go for speed.
Taking a route along the river and over Teddington Lock in the mornings until the cull is over in Bushy Park to get my fix of rural wilderness.
You've been scooping a few trophies lately as well I noticed.

yeeeeeees ! ..... knocked 4 seconds off a previous PB today

its not a big segment, but going from 51 seconds to 47 seconds I was well chuffed with ...... well, until I looked at my peers and realised that everyone elses time is between 21-37 seconds

so need to get 10 seconds better at least ... doah !

New route. Kingston Road is longer than the going through the park, but it's nice and wide, has a decent cycle track, is less wiggly and has fewer lights. I'm enjoying it whereas I was learning to hate going southbound down Chestnut Avenue into the wind.

You shouldn't really be in a position where you hate riding in a park.

speaking of short segments, 3rd of 40,000 sounds decent doesn't it?

It does get windy in there and there's no shelter on that road. I have a permanent cross wind as I take the tarmac path perpendicular to the road have to be careful of dog walkers and kids so can't really go too fast most days, but it's a hell of a lot nicer than Sandy Lane.

In fairness, that section is treated as a sprint segment for hill repeats; full power, on the drops, die over the top. Down to 13th on the full upper bit.. been up 154 times this year

  • Is it just me being a Strava rookie, or can I not look at times set by others (day off work for me) on my commute segments today on my pc, but I can see today's times on my Android app (free version of Strava)?

I think I could count the number of times I've been up there on the road this year on one hand, shameful considering how close to home the park is. Done it a few more times on the off road path. The difference in placings along the top is quite funny. Last time I climbed Broomfield a chap flew past me on the hill, I'd caught him by Dark Hill in spite of having a stitch.
  • Is anyone here using Strava with a relatively basic PAYG Android phone?

If so, what's it like, especially as regards GPS tracking accuracy?

    Latest one which was tough, a good gradual climb;

A flat fast one, good one this, considering how many have ridden the segment.......

A lot of those stats will be pretty useless such as comparing average speeds by country, there are two many variables to make that mean anything realistic.

I'd be more interested in seeing how many hours per person as a proportion of the total population.

    Same for segments etc etc

Haha - just got the ol' email...

Someone's taken one of my KOMs on the East Lancs Road. Unsurprising, really, since there was a 35mph tailwind the entire way... :D

Ha, reminds me of when someone took one of mine near Canary Wharf - his ride was titled 'metrological doping' :)
"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"
"Don't be silly son, you're a bloke, you'll never grow up"
  • It was a close call whether to go out at all, having left it so late, but I decided to do a very quick side-by-side test...

My new Sony Smartwatch 3 using Strava in standalone mode (first trip yesterday of watch missed the first ~1 mile using Ghostracer in standalone mode) http://www.strava.com/activities/843930805
My Nexus 7 2013 tablet using Ghostracer (default recording settings) http://www.strava.com/activities/843939066

Quite a lot of differences, including one segment missing altogether!

The burning question is, are the discrepancies due to the apps or the devices, or both? Hopefully can test this out again tomorrow, swapping which app is on which device and then running same app on both devices on Friday.
