Not sure 66's are a great idea if you wanted to pedal the bike uphill, they're pretty weighty. I'd have leant more towards lyriks/totems.

    For £375 you can't complain!

The fox's don't work for me :( luckily there are fox fanbois out there :)

Brand new? I guess not! Never tried Fox myself, i'm a diehard Rockshox fanboy.

Yeah, they were my 1st fox forks... not impressed tbh.

it was either RS domain or the Zocchi's and I went for Zocci's!

edit: and yeah, brand new :)

how come you sold the Fox's bud? i no you said they weren't to your liking but surely they weren't that bad??

and any wheels in mind? maybe a set of hope hoops with flow rims??

Fox's were a basic model, no decent adjustments and they blew through the travel far too easy.
The zocchi's are top of the range from last year and a steal at the price I got!

Wheels will be a superstar offering, not sure on colour combo yet, but will be their DH wheels with DB spokes :)

Fair enough, probably a good call, winstanleys have some totems pretty cheap as well, that's what I'd have gone for personally, but like i say, rockshox fanboy :)

Oh, and if you're on a budget, superstar have come up with a DH wheelset for £130 F&R, but only comes in black. Bargain!

  • I'm non too fussed about weight, can drop half a lb by changing to single ply tyres haha!

The 66 RC3 EVO is supposed to be one of the best and user tunable forks out there!
The evo cartridge can be changed specifically for the user and its one of the plushest forks out there once bedded in - or so I'm lead to believe after a bit of research!
I'm imagining that it should hopefully blow the fox away in terms of ride quality and feedback.

Yeah, Superstar wheelset will be ordered when I get paid... Think i'm heading down the DH595 rim route as SS said its slightly stronger.... BUt i have no idea what colour combo!

I say go for something unbelievably garish, some combination of red, white and blue? ;)

  • Right, wheel choice is decided...

Superstar DH-595 rims in black, switch hubs in gold, black DB spokes.

I've been checking weights and they're pretty much 1lb lighter than the standard Drift 2.1 that originally came on the bike!
    Can't argue really!!

Just gotta wait for the Syntace x12 adapter to come in stock!

Wow, those must be some heavy wheels for the SS wheelset to be lighter, those DH595 rims weigh a fair amount!
Should be pretty solid though. Do you have one of those fancy new 142mm rear ends?

Have your 66's turned up yet? Also, do you mind me asking where you got them from? Wouldn't mind some 170mm 55's for my slayer if I can get the cash together (after me slating marzocchi... lol), though lyriks would be good also...

  • Yup, the drift 2.1 are about 2600g and are crap. Bent both front and rear rim/spokes and the welds are coming loose!

The cheaper SS DHX set is only 2250g - (455g to 1lb approx) so thats over half a lb already! and the custom set will be lighter as I'm using the lighter rims and DB spokes!
I was going to get Mavic EX729, but the SS DH rims are lighter!

Yup, I have the Syntace x12 rear skewer. seems pretty good, nice and tight out back! the Hub spacing is 142mm though so a bit of a pain in the arse when you need a new one!

66's due in stock on the 23rd Jan. Getting them from CRC but called before ordering to make sure they were coming in! Slight delay due to xmas shipping but I'm not in a massive rush (especially for £375!).

Ah nice, they're £399 now, which still isn't a bad price. I'd lean towards them if they weren't so heavy :(
    Production Privee Shan

    B'Twin Triban 5
  • Yeah I got them at £399 with a £25 off voucher lol.

I think they're about the same weight as my old 2009 Domains which were ok tbh.
I think that the increased adjustments and ride capability over the Fox's will completely overshadow the weight! If I drop a lb on the wheels I've actually lost a bit of weight! (already lost a few g converting to single ring!)

Fair play, i'd like to lose some weight off mine if possible, seeing as it's now my only bike! Thinking about a 55 CR, it's only about 2.3kg for a 170mm fork... could be worth a punt

  • Time for an update I think..

    Over Xmas I've ordered:
Shimano SLX Double Crankset - will be converted to single ring.
Rockshox Domain RC forks - probably need a firmer spring, but I did find the firm spring on my old Domains too firm.. will check sag levels once fitted and go from there.
Superstar Switch wheelset, with DH-595 rims and DB spokes - was tempted by the Trizoid, but loads use the switch so will be fine. Slightly lighter and cheaper!

    Been an expensive one!

Domain RC? I thought you said you had ordered a 66 RC3?
    Production Privee Shan

    B'Twin Triban 5
  • I did, but CRC can't get them or can't confirm when they can get them... Got the Domain for £350 in the end!

Next best thing and were my original 1st choice, but out of my price range!
Actually lighter than the 66 too!

Fair enough, the damping isn't the best though, I'd have just hung on until CRC can get the 66, or had you already sold your 36 and were desperate for a new fork?
    Production Privee Shan

    B'Twin Triban 5
  • Didn't want to wait and CRC don't know if they can even get them!! for £350 I'd rather just have the Domains.

Motion control is much better than the R damper.. And its the is version so specifically made for big hits!

I've been impressed by my Domain RCs, they handle stuff very well and I don't find I'm blowing through the travel too much.

Fair enough, yeah I had some domain RCs as well, they're a decent fork. I'd never buy the domain R though. It would pain me to hand over that much money for them though, given what chain reaction were selling them for a couple of years ago! (Think it was about £160 brand new or something daft!). I just quite like having the floodgate and low speed compression damping so i can set the fork up differently for climbing or steep downhill and everything in between.

Nice!! (is your mate a bit of a wind up merchant? ;) )
Got my new lyriks fitted today, also my first brand new fork purchase. I was expecting it to be OEM as well, but it wasn't. Came with the spare springs as well, chuffed! haha
    Production Privee Shan

    B'Twin Triban 5
  • Out of interest, what springs did you get?
    Just ordered new from tftuned!!
  • oh and I've also got an SLX crankset waiting at the GF's in Cardiff and my wheelset turning up tomorrow at work!

Ben I have the extra firm spring in my domains, 160mm mind, I weight 80-85kilo and although its hard for me to bottom them out it feels great, I did have the firm spring in but that was way to soft and felt like a pogo stick on landing.
